Before broadcasting, confirm that permission covers both the hymn or arrangement and the specific recording you plan to play. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt a stream when it detects a match.
What you need before you start
- A computer with OBS installed, the hymn audio or video files you are authorized to stream, and a reliable internet connection.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Music permissions that cover the planned performance or recording, plus rights to any lyrics, artwork, or other visuals you display.
OBS documents local media sources for formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, WAV, MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. The exact interface can vary by installed OBS version; the OBS Media Sources documentation cited here is dated January 11, 2022. OBS: Media Sources.
Set up a continuous playlist in OBS
1. Choose cleared source files
Use recordings the church created or has permission to stream. Permission to perform a hymn live does not necessarily include permission to broadcast a commercial recording of it. A hymn’s composition, arrangement or translation, and particular sound recording may involve separate rights.
2. Add and loop the media
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the stream.
- For one file, add a Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop in its properties.
- For multiple files, add the VLC Video Source and configure its playlist. OBS documents this source as restarting the playlist after its media files finish. If the VLC source is unavailable, confirm that VLC is installed.
Run through the playlist once before scheduling the stream. Check that files play in the intended order, the last file returns to the beginning, and transitions do not create an unwanted pause or cut. The encoder repeats the media; YouTube receives the resulting live output.

3. Build the scene and check audio
Add only the visuals you intend to show, such as a still image or lyrics, and make sure the church has rights to those materials too. A music license does not automatically clear every visual element. Listen to the OBS audio output and check that the media is reaching the stream mix at a suitable level without clipping.
4. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live to open the Live Control Room.
- In the stream settings, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the appropriate YouTube connection option, and enter the stream details if prompted. Keep the stream key private: it functions as a credential for broadcasting to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream status. Go live only after the preview shows the correct scene and the audio is present.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented in its Go live with an encoder instructions. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that a longer broadcast will be archived. YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
5. Monitor the broadcast
Keep an operator available to check the OBS output, network connection, and YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the playlist continues to advance and that the stream has not received a copyright warning. The computer and network must remain available for the intended duration; the sources do not establish one universal hardware or internet configuration for every church.

Clear music rights before broadcasting
YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube Terms of Service. Check the rights for the song, arrangement or translation, recording, territory, and planned platform use rather than assuming that one permission covers them all.
YouTube can interrupt a licensed stream
YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams. If a match remains, YouTube may warn the channel, replace the stream with a placeholder, or interrupt or terminate it. Even when a church has a license, the rights holder may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check the Live Control Room for warnings and contact the rights holder to resolve a match.
Creator Music is not clearance for a live hymn stream
YouTube says Creator Music does not currently support licensing live content; its permitted track use is for long-form videos rather than live streams. It is therefore not a substitute for securing the rights needed for a live playlist. YouTube Help: Creator Music.

US churches: understand the distinction in CCLI’s licenses
For the United States, CCLI describes its Streaming License as covering online worship services with songs and hymns performed live by church musicians. Its Streaming Plus License extends coverage to eligible authorized master recordings, backing tracks, and multitracks. CCLI states that its repertoire covers more than 450,000 songs and hymns; that is CCLI’s own repertoire statement, not an independent count. Check the current terms and confirm that the particular song, licensee, territory, and recording qualify. CCLI: Streaming Licenses.
CCLI notes that Streaming Plus recording permission generally concerns audio. Video use usually needs permission from the copyright owner; CCLI’s page notes an exception for SongSelect Lyric Videos for Streaming Plus license holders during a live stream. Read the current license terms for the specific use rather than inferring video rights from audio coverage.
If using a CCLI license, CCLI recommends putting the Church Copyright License and Streaming License numbers in the video description. Make sure the licensee name and covered material correspond to the broadcast. This is a US licensing example, not a determination of what a church in another country needs; requirements depend on territory and the rights involved.

Choose a setup that fits the broadcast

Troubleshoot common interruptions
The playlist stops at the end
Check that Loop is enabled on the OBS Media Source, or that the VLC Video Source playlist is configured to restart. Test the source in OBS before going live.
YouTube does not show the stream preview
Confirm that OBS is streaming, the server URL and stream key match the active YouTube stream, and the Live Control Room is open to that stream. If you exposed the key, reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
The preview has no audio
Check that the media source is not muted, that its audio is routed to the OBS stream mix, and that the OBS meters move during playback. Then listen to the preview before taking the stream public.

YouTube shows a copyright warning or interrupts the stream
Open the Live Control Room dashboard to identify the warning. Confirm that the church’s permission covers the specific composition and recording. If the church is licensed, ask the rights holder whether the channel must be allowlisted in Content ID; a license by itself may not prevent automated interruption.
The broadcast drops or develops gaps
Check whether OBS is still running, whether the media source continues to play, and whether the computer or network lost availability. The right recovery setup depends on the church’s equipment and connection; the cited sources do not establish a universal fix or configuration.
