You can run a classical-music radio-style livestream on YouTube by clearing rights for both the compositions and the specific recordings, enabling YouTube Live, and sending a continuous audio-and-visual feed through an encoder. The practical challenge is keeping the feed monitored and managing stream turnover: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but its guidance does not promise one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast.
Before you go live: clear the music and recording rights
Classical repertoire is not automatically free to stream. A musical composition and a particular sound recording are separate works and may have different owners and permissions. The U.S. Copyright Office explains this distinction; its guidance is U.S.-focused, not a universal legal determination. U.S. Copyright Office
For every track, confirm that your permissions cover the use you actually intend: a live YouTube broadcast and, if applicable, its archive. Check the territories where the stream will be available, as well as any expiration dates and attribution requirements. Permission for a recording does not necessarily cover the composition, or vice versa.
Keep a rights record for each track
A simple catalogue can help you verify the playlist before launch. Record the composition, performer and recording, relevant rights owners, authorized uses and territories, and any expiry or credit terms. This is a practical tracking measure, not a substitute for legal advice or the agreements themselves.

Plan for YouTube Content ID
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the material remains, it may temporarily interrupt or terminate the broadcast. YouTube says creators with a license should ask the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams
Coordinate allowlisting with the relevant rights owners before the broadcast, and confirm which channel is being allowlisted. Rights clearance and Content ID allowlisting are distinct checks.

Enable YouTube Live and choose an encoder
Check channel eligibility early
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so request access before your planned launch rather than on the day. YouTube: Get started with live streaming YouTube: Encoder setup
Pick software or dedicated hardware
YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. For a modest setup, software such as OBS can send the audio and visuals from a computer. That means the source computer and software need to remain operational during the broadcast. A standalone encoder may suit a dedicated production, but check that its inputs and configuration fit your audio setup; YouTube does not prescribe a particular model for an audio-first station.

| Option | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | You want to build the stream on a computer; OBS describes itself as open-source streaming software. | The computer and encoder software must keep running for the feed to continue. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | You prefer a dedicated encoding appliance for a fixed production. | You must purchase and check compatibility, including audio inputs; no specific model is established as best for this use. |
Set up the continuous radio-style feed
- Prepare the playlist and visuals. Assemble only music you are authorized to use, and create a visual feed to accompany the audio. Check that the visual material is also cleared for the planned use.
- Open YouTube Studio and create a stream. Use the Live Control Room to create or schedule the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance for the available stream details. YouTube: Encoder setup
- Connect the encoder. Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm that the audio is audible and continuous, the visual feed appears as intended, and the correct stream is selected. For a scheduled stream, follow the Live Control Room prompt to confirm going live.
- Test the operating plan before public launch. Check how an operator will monitor audio and connection status, and rehearse recovery from a connection interruption and the planned handoff between streams. This is operational preparation; it does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
- Manage turnover and archives. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Build a deliberate schedule for ending and restarting broadcasts, and decide how to handle the resulting archives. Its guidance does not establish guaranteed uninterrupted 24-hour streaming, so do not treat one encoder session as a promise of indefinite continuity.
Keep the station running around the clock
A 24/7 schedule is an operating plan, not just a playlist setting. Assign responsibility for watching the broadcast, responding to a dropped connection or copyright interruption, and starting the next scheduled stream. If you rely on a computer-based encoder, include the computer, encoder software, audio playback, and network connection in that monitoring plan.
- Keep a current playlist and rights record so an operator can identify the material playing when a claim occurs.
- Check with rights owners that Content ID allowlisting is in place for the channel before using licensed third-party recordings.
- Plan the stream handoff and archive workflow around YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive behavior.
- Protect access to the channel and stream key, and limit who can change the live setup.
Common problems and what to check
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream. | The channel may not be verified, may have a live restriction within the previous 90 days, or live enablement may still be processing. | Check channel eligibility in YouTube Studio and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. |
| The encoder connects, but the stream does not appear as expected. | The server URL or stream key may be wrong, or the scheduled-stream confirmation has not been completed. | Compare the encoder fields with the current Live Control Room details, then check the preview and any go-live prompt. |
| YouTube interrupts or replaces the broadcast. | A live copyright scan may have matched third-party material. | Review the notice, verify the rights for both the composition and recording, and ask the relevant owner about Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume a license by itself prevents interruption. |
| The broadcast or archive ends sooner than the planned 24-hour cycle. | The stream may have encountered a connection or encoding problem, or reached a planned turnover; YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. | Have an operator check the encoder and Live Control Room, restart or schedule the next stream as appropriate, and review the archive plan. YouTube’s guidance does not promise a single continuous 24-hour session. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recordings or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only. You remain responsible for having the necessary music and recording rights and for resolving any Content ID issues. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
