To reduce CPU use when OBS loops videos to YouTube Live, check the stream encoder and video playback decoding separately. Use a compatible hardware encoder in Settings → Output if available, and try Use hardware decoding when available in the Media Source properties. Then simplify scenes and test before leaving the stream running. Looping is a playback control; OBS does not say that looping itself causes high CPU use.

First, find out what is using the CPU

OBS has two distinct jobs here: it decodes the video being played and encodes the outgoing stream. Either can contribute to system load. A hardware decoding option for a Media Source is not the same as a hardware encoder for the stream, and either can use GPU resources as well as affect overall performance.

  • Check the selected encoder: software encoding with x264 uses the CPU; a supported hardware encoder can shift encoding work to a specialized GPU component.
  • Check the playback source: a Media Source can optionally use hardware decoding when the computer’s GPU supports decoding that file type.
  • Check OBS’s performance indicators and log: distinguish high CPU use from rendering or encoding lag and dropped frames. A busy or complex scene can be a factor even when CPU usage is the original concern.

There is no universal CPU target or guaranteed percentage reduction. OBS says CPU requirements vary considerably with the encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity.

Reduce playback workload without breaking the loop

For a single video file

  1. In OBS, select the video source and open its Properties.
  2. Confirm that Loop is enabled. This controls playback repetition; it is not a CPU optimization by itself.
  3. If available, try Use hardware decoding when available. This can move video decoding work away from the CPU when the GPU supports the file’s format, but it is optional and does not guarantee lower total system utilization.

For a playlist of clips

  1. Install VLC, then add or select a VLC Video source in OBS and configure its playlist.
  2. Enable Loop Playlist in the source’s properties and check that the playlist plays through and repeats as expected.
  3. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.

Choose an encoder that fits your computer

  1. Open Settings → Output in OBS and inspect the encoder choices for the active output mode.
  2. If your hardware and operating system support one, try a hardware encoder such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF or Intel Quick Sync instead of x264.
  3. Apply the change and test the actual video, scene and stream settings you intend to use. Encoder availability and compatibility vary by GPU and operating system; do not assume every listed encoder appears on every computer.

Hardware encoding shifts encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component, but it is not a guarantee that total system load will fall or that stream quality will be identical. OBS notes that older hardware encoders can deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with the default veryfast preset. Judge the result at your intended resolution and bitrate rather than selecting an encoder by name alone.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Simplify OBS if CPU use or lag remains high

  • Remove sources that are not needed in the active scene.
  • Reduce costly filters and simplify complex browser sources or overlays.
  • Use video files at a resolution appropriate for the stream rather than needlessly large media.
  • If simpler changes are not enough, reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate. These changes reduce output work but also change the stream viewers receive.

OBS workload depends on the encoder, output resolution, FPS and scene complexity, so change one setting at a time. If you are unsure which settings your machine can handle, OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help select settings based on your hardware and network; it is a starting point, not proof that a long-running stream will be stable.

Keep YouTube’s stream settings intact while tuning

Reducing CPU use should not mean sending an unsuitable signal to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. Suggested bitrates depend on codec, resolution and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current recommendation for the combination you actually stream rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

After changing encoder, resolution, FPS or bitrate, run a representative test that includes motion and audio. Watch OBS stats or logs for dropped or skipped frames, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health during it.

A practical test and troubleshooting order

  1. Play the same representative video and scene you plan to loop, including audio and any overlays.
  2. Check OBS’s log and performance indicators to identify whether the issue is CPU load, rendering lag, encoding lag or dropped frames.
  3. Try hardware decoding for the Media Source if supported; test. Then try a compatible hardware encoder; test again.
  4. If the issue remains, simplify sources, filters and browser elements. Only then consider lowering output resolution or FPS.
  5. Change one variable at a time and check YouTube stream health before relying on the setup for a long-running stream.
  • CPU remains high with x264: check whether a compatible hardware encoder is available, then compare the result in a representative test.
  • CPU remains high during playback: try the Media Source hardware-decoding option if the GPU supports that file type. Keep in mind decoding and encoding are separate workloads.
  • OBS reports rendering or encoding lag: reduce scene complexity and costly sources or filters; if necessary, reduce output work by lowering resolution or FPS.
  • VLC playlist does not work: verify VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  • Stream quality changes after switching encoders: compare quality at the intended bitrate and output settings. Hardware encoding is not automatically equivalent to software encoding on every system.

When a hardware upgrade is worth considering

Consider a graphics card with a compatible hardware video encoder only if your existing system has no suitable encoder or configuration changes cannot handle the stream you want. Check compatibility with your operating system and current GPU first. OBS’s general system requirements do not guarantee that a particular computer can handle a specific combination of video, scene complexity, resolution and FPS.
