For a replayable archive, keep each session under 12 hours: YouTube says streams longer than that may not be captured. What “continuous” means for a page-turning stream
A live broadcast can stay on for an extended session, but YouTube does not guarantee an archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. If viewers should be able to replay the session, end it before 12 hours, start a new session as needed, and keep a local recording as backup. YouTube’s archive guidance
This setup is for a live camera-and-microphone performance: pages are turned in real time and the encoder sends the camera and audio feed to YouTube. If you instead want a prerecorded video to repeat without operating a camera, see the cloud option below.
Prepare the channel and equipment
Check live-stream eligibility early
Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your planned session. Its general eligibility guidance also says livestreamers must be at least 16. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance

Choose a camera and audio arrangement
An encoder is useful when you need to combine a fixed camera view with external audio hardware. Frame the book and hands so each turn is easy to see; place the microphone close enough to pick up paper sounds, while listening for room noise and clipping. These are production choices, not YouTube requirements. A separate microphone is optional; YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. YouTube’s live-stream tips
- Use a stable camera position that shows the page and the turning action throughout the session.
- Monitor the sound in headphones or through the encoder’s meters. Adjust distance or level if page sounds clip or background noise competes with them.
- Make sure the camera and audio inputs are compatible with your encoder, and that the computer can sustain the feed.
Set up the YouTube Live broadcast with an encoder
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one if you want a watch page ready in advance. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Choose the encoder workflow: Connect the camera and microphone, then select them as the video and audio sources in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports external audio and video hardware; exact control names vary by encoder.
- Copy the server details: In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s server and key fields. Treat the key as a password: it authorizes the encoder to send a feed to your YouTube stream. Do not publish or share it.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview: Confirm that the picture appears and the book is in frame. Listen for clear page sounds without clipping, and check that the feed is reaching YouTube before you go live. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring audio and video. YouTube’s streaming tips
- Start the event: If you scheduled the stream with manual go-live, start it from the Live Control Room after the encoder feed is ready. Otherwise, follow the go-live controls shown for your stream.
- Record locally: Start a local recording and verify that the file is growing while you broadcast. When the session is over, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder.
Keep the feed stable and protect the replay
Leave upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Leave additional capacity for other network use and watch the encoder and Live Control Room for interruptions. The recommendation is a margin, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. YouTube’s streaming tips

Use the right ingestion option for your setup
For a straightforward encoder broadcast, use the encoder workflow supported by your setup. HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion option; YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. HLS is not required for a page-turning broadcast. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance
Make an archive plan
Because a stream over 12 hours may not be captured, do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for an all-day or indefinite session. Break a long-running concept into sessions shorter than 12 hours and retain local recordings for recovery or editing. Check rights before showing or playing anything
You are responsible for having the rights needed for the material in your live stream, including music licensing where applicable. A page-turning performance or ASMR format does not by itself remove copyright obligations. Use only content cleared for both live broadcast and any replay you intend to keep. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions
Troubleshoot common problems
- No preview in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is running, that it has the correct stream URL and key, and that the intended camera and microphone are selected. If you have just enabled live streaming for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Paper sounds are faint or distorted: Reposition the microphone or adjust its input level, then listen to another test. Keep the paper audible without letting peaks clip.
- The feed drops or stutters: Check the encoder’s connection and leave the recommended upload-bandwidth headroom. Pause other network-heavy activity where possible and test again.
- The live stream has no replay: Check its duration. YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours; use shorter sessions and verify that a local recording is being saved.
- The stream cannot start: Confirm channel verification and eligibility, including whether the channel has a restriction in the last 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
