Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes: a DigitalOcean Droplet can run an encoder that sends a continuous playlist to YouTube Live. YouTube does not broadcast a playlist URL by itself—the encoder must send the video feed to YouTube using the stream URL and a private stream key. This guide covers the setup, settings, cost factors, long-stream tradeoffs, and what to check when the feed fails.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A Linux DigitalOcean Droplet and an encoder workflow that can play your playlist and send its output to YouTube Live. No specific Droplet size is established for every playlist: workload depends on the media and whether it must be re-encoded.
- Video and audio files you have the rights to stream. Keep a copy of the playlist source files and any configuration needed to recover the broadcast.
- A stable outbound connection from the Droplet and enough DigitalOcean transfer allowance for the stream.
The stream key is sensitive: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not put it in a public example, expose it in logs, or leave it in shell history. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
Set up the YouTube live event
- Enable live streaming on the channel and allow for the first-time activation delay if applicable.
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Keep the key private; the encoder needs it to deliver the feed to the correct broadcast.
- Confirm the event is configured as intended and leave the Live Control Room available for preview and stream-health checks.
YouTube’s detailed encoder connection flow is in its official setup guide.
Prepare the Droplet and playlist encoder
Install a Linux encoder and arrange for it to play the files in the order you want, then send the resulting media feed to YouTube’s stream URL using the event’s key. OBS is one free, open-source encoder listed by YouTube; the best encoder depends on how you plan to handle continuous playback on a server. YouTube also lists Gyre and Upstream as hosted continuous-streaming options, but their listing does not establish current prices or specific service limits.

This guide does not prescribe a universal FFmpeg playlist command: playlist syntax, codec compatibility, restart behavior, and resource use depend on your files and chosen workflow. Validate the playlist and encoder on your own media before relying on it for a long broadcast. A process supervisor or other recovery arrangement may help keep a self-managed workflow running, but its configuration is specific to the encoder and Droplet setup.
Choose the encoding approach
- If the files are already encoded in a format and settings your workflow can pass through, avoiding re-encoding can reduce processing needs.
- If the encoder must re-encode, test the Droplet under the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. The sources do not establish a minimum CPU or memory size, so do not select a plan based on an assumed universal requirement.
- Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends it as the secure extension of RTMP.
Configure encoder settings for YouTube
YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Choose settings that fit the source files, target viewing quality, encoder capacity, and Droplet network capacity; the figures below are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Droplet can sustain them.

Test the stream before leaving it running
- Start the encoder with a short test playlist or a brief segment of the intended content.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, audio, and the expected content sequence.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health feedback and adjust the encoder settings if it reports an issue.
- Confirm the encoder process and broadcast remain active for the duration of the test, then validate playlist transitions and recovery behavior for your own workflow.
- Monitor DigitalOcean transfer use and billing projections while the stream runs.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; see its encoder guidance.

Estimate DigitalOcean costs and transfer use
A Droplet’s cost has two separate parts: compute for the selected plan and outbound data transfer. DigitalOcean says included Droplet transfer pools across Droplets at the team level; inbound Droplet transfer is free, and additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB. That overage rate is not the Droplet’s compute price. Check your account’s actual team allowance and usage rather than assuming a universal quota. See DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing documentation.
For a rough transfer estimate, multiply the sustained output bitrate by the hours you expect to stream, then convert the resulting data amount to GiB and allow for stream overhead. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed bill: observed use depends on the actual broadcast. Use DigitalOcean’s billing dashboard and projections to track team-level consumption.

Compute is billed separately according to the selected Droplet plan and configuration. DigitalOcean says a powered-off Droplet remains billable because its resources are reserved; billing stops when the Droplet is destroyed. Plan details and billing rules are documented in DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.

A continuous playlist does not require one uninterrupted YouTube live session. If keeping YouTube’s automatic archive matters, plan sessions shorter than 12 hours: YouTube says streams under 12 hours may be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. The archive and rewind guidance is available at YouTube’s archive help page and DVR help page.

Ending and restarting sessions before the 12-hour threshold is the more cautious choice if archives matter, but it means the channel will have separate live events rather than one unbroken session. Check your channel’s archive settings and verify the resulting recordings. YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive; estimate disk needs from your bitrate and retention period.
Or let it run in the cloud

Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start the first live stream | Live streaming may still be activating on the channel. | Allow up to 24 hours after enabling it, then check the Live Control Room again. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Check that the encoder uses the stream URL and key for the correct event, and that the key has not been changed or exposed. | Re-enter the current event details privately and restart the test feed. |
| Stream health reports problems | Compare the output codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, bitrate, frame rate, and resolution with YouTube’s current recommendations. | Reduce or correct settings that exceed the source, encoder, or network capacity, then test again. |
| Video freezes or the playlist does not advance | Confirm the files play correctly in the chosen encoder and that the playlist workflow supports their formats and transitions. | Test with the actual media and validate the encoder’s process recovery; there is no universal playlist command established here. |
| The Droplet consumes more transfer than expected | Check sustained bitrate, broadcast hours, stream overhead, and pooled team usage. | Estimate from actual output and monitor billing projections; additional outbound transfer is charged at the documented rate. |
| A long stream has no complete archive or rewind | YouTube warns that sessions beyond 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. | Use shorter sessions if those features matter, and keep a local recording if you need a separate backup. |
