To stream recorded lessons from a folder as one continuous YouTube Live broadcast, put the lesson filenames in the exact order you want in an FFmpeg concat manifest, then send that input to a YouTube encoder endpoint with your stream key. FFmpeg does not automatically scan and alphabetize a folder. This workflow broadcasts the recordings as a live stream; it does not upload each lesson as a separate YouTube video.
Plan the playback order before you build the manifest
First decide what “alphabetical” means for your filenames. In particular, choose whether numbered names such as Lesson 2.mp4 and Lesson 10.mp4 should be ordered by ordinary character sorting or by lesson number. The concat manifest plays entries in the order written; it does not define or apply a folder-sorting convention.
Use a consistent naming scheme if you want ordinary alphabetical sorting to match the teaching sequence. For numbered lessons, zero-padding often makes the intended sequence clear—for example, Lesson 02.mp4 before Lesson 10.mp4—but verify the order yourself rather than relying on an unverified sorting script.
Create an ordered FFmpeg manifest
Keep the manifest beside the folder, not inside it
Create a plain-text file named lessons.ffconcat in the directory that contains your lesson folder, or in another location from which you can accurately reference every file. The example below assumes the terminal’s current working directory is the lesson folder and that the filenames contain no apostrophes or unusual characters:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'Lesson 01.mp4'
file 'Lesson 02.mp4'
file 'Lesson 03.mp4'
The ffconcat version 1.0 line must be the first line exactly for automatic format recognition. Add one file directive for each lesson, in the final sequence you want broadcast. The manifest order—not the order shown by a file browser—controls playback.
Use paths carefully
Relative paths are interpreted from the process working directory. If the manifest is outside the media folder, use relative paths from the manifest’s effective working context or use full paths. Paths containing spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping. The concat demuxer rejects unsafe paths by default; keep -safe 1 rather than casually disabling that protection with -safe 0. If FFmpeg rejects a path, fix the path or manifest syntax rather than weakening safety without understanding the consequences.

Check whether the files can be concatenated directly
The concat demuxer is appropriate when the files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. A matching filename extension does not establish compatibility: two MP4 files may contain different codecs, stream layouts, or timing parameters. Use ffprobe or another media-inspection tool to compare representative files before committing to a long broadcast.
Matching inputs: concatenate without re-encoding
For compatible inputs, the basic command is:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i lessons.ffconcat -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR-INGEST-URL/YOUR-STREAM-KEY"
Replace the output placeholder with the actual RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not copy the placeholder literally. The -re option reads the media at its recorded rate rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it. -c copy avoids re-encoding, but it does not make incompatible inputs compatible. The FLV output format is used for the RTMP/RTMPS streaming workflow; confirm your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current accepted configuration before relying on a particular codec combination.

Different inputs: normalize or use a concat filter
If the files differ in codecs, time bases, or audio/video stream layout, direct packet concatenation may fail or produce a broken transition. Normalize the files to a consistent set of streams and parameters before building the manifest, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter, which is designed for concatenation cases that require re-encoding. Re-encoding takes additional processing time and may change quality, so test the result with representative lessons before streaming the entire sequence. Changing a file extension alone does not solve a format mismatch.
Set up the YouTube Live broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup and create a new stream or schedule one. Follow any account-specific eligibility or activation steps YouTube presents.
- Open Live Control Room and copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the secure RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room rather than assuming the default RTMP address is the secure endpoint. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, public repositories, or shared command histories. If it becomes public, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Configure FFmpeg for the actual endpoint and stream settings. Insert the copied URL and key into the command output, and select encoding parameters that suit the lesson files and your upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, square pixels, progressive scan, and SDR Rec. 709. These are YouTube recommendations; support for a codec or option depends on your FFmpeg build and the selected streaming workflow.
- Test before the full broadcast. Run a short private or unlisted test with actual lesson audio and motion. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then start the full playlist only after the test behaves as expected.
- Go live if the stream is scheduled. Once the preview appears in Live Control Room, click Go live to make the scheduled stream public.
Choose bitrate and encoder settings for the source
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a keyframe frequency of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Its recommendations also vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current bitrate table in YouTube Help’s encoder settings to select a target that matches your chosen output. For example, that guidance lists 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p/60 fps; these are YouTube’s recommended settings, not universal minimums or measured results.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Measure the connection that will actually send the stream and leave headroom for normal network variation. A high-resolution setting cannot compensate for insufficient upload capacity. Match output dimensions and frame rate to the material when practical, and avoid upscaling low-resolution lessons just to select a larger number.
For playback from a folder, the entire FFmpeg process and network connection must remain available while the broadcast is running. Keep the computer awake, prevent scheduled restarts from interrupting the process, and ensure the lesson files remain accessible for the whole session.

Copyright, reuse, and replay considerations
Only stream lessons and accompanying music, images, and other material that you have the rights or permission to broadcast. A live stream of recorded material is still a public transmission; a lesson being educational or previously uploaded does not by itself establish permission for every included asset. YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies can apply to prerecorded material as well as live content. Review your material before broadcasting and use the copyright safety checklist as a preparation aid, not as a substitute for rights clearance.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish an automatic archive for streams lasting longer than 12 hours, so do not rely on a replay being available for a longer broadcast. If preserving a replay matters, plan a local recording or other backup independently.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Files play in the wrong order: FFmpeg follows manifest order. Inspect every
fileline and correct the sequence; do not assume the folder’s displayed sort order is used. - “Unsafe file name” or path error: Check the working directory, relative paths, spaces, and special-character escaping. Keep safe-path mode enabled unless you have a specific, understood reason to change it.
- Concat errors, missing audio, or a bad transition: Compare stream types, codecs, and time bases across the files. Normalize inconsistent inputs or use the concat filter when re-encoding is needed.
- YouTube shows no preview or the encoder will not connect: Verify that you copied the URL and key for the correct stream, that you used the RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room, and that the key is current. Check that the output protocol and container match the encoder workflow.
- Stream health reports dropped frames or instability: Check actual upload capacity, reduce the bitrate or output demand to a supported level, and repeat a short test. Use YouTube’s recommended settings for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- The stream connects but playback is too fast or stops between files: Confirm
-reis present for real-time reading, then inspect the concat compatibility of the lesson files. A stream can connect successfully even when the media sequence itself has a format problem.
