For a multi-guest livestream, build a small set of scene layouts around what is happening: a group discussion, a featured interview, a screen share, audience questions, and the opening and close. Keep faces and shared material readable, give names and comments a consistent home, and switch scenes rather than rearranging every element live.
Start with a scene plan, not a pile of graphics
Decide what the audience needs to see at each point in the show, then prepare a scene for each distinct moment. A scene-based approach makes transitions easier to manage and gives the broadcast a consistent visual identity.
- Opening or standby: Use a branded card or restrained countdown. Avoid putting an inactive guest grid in competition with the show title.
- Group discussion: Keep current speakers in a consistent group arrangement. Add names or role labels, but make sure they remain secondary to faces.
- Host and featured guest: Use a balanced side-by-side layout when the conversation is the main event.
- Spotlight interview: Emphasize the person answering or presenting. Keep a smaller host tile only when it helps viewers follow the exchange.
- Screen share or demonstration: Give the shared content most of the screen. Keep the presenter visible in a smaller slot when that does not make the material hard to read.
- Audience Q&A: Return to a group or host-led layout. Put selected questions in the same lower-screen area each time, clear of faces and essential screen content.
- Closing: Use a thank-you or next-step card that returns to the program’s base branding.
Overlay ideas that work for a panel or gaming show
Use labels to orient, not decorate
Give each guest a name, handle, or role label in a stable position. For a gaming panel, a short role such as “host,” “guest,” or “coach” can clarify who is speaking without filling the screen with bios. Keep labels visually subordinate to the video.
Make comments and questions predictable
Reserve a consistent region for audience comments or selected questions. A viewer should be able to find that area without it covering a face, game HUD, or the part of a shared screen being discussed. Show only the comment or question currently relevant to the conversation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep branding restrained and consistent
Use a limited palette and repeat the same hierarchy across scenes: show identity, participant names, and supporting information should not compete for equal attention. A logo can remain part of the overall visual system, while scene-specific titles or question cards can change with the segment.
Design for small screens
Check that text is large enough to read on a phone and that text has clear contrast against its background. Avoid placing essential words over busy gameplay or video. Preview each layout at the size viewers are likely to watch, not only on the producer’s full-size monitor.

Build scenes in StreamYard
StreamYard describes a Scene as “a pre-configured arrangement that captures everything you add to the stage.” Its Scenes feature can group cameras, guests, media, layouts, backgrounds, overlays, banners, and clips, and scenes can be switched during a broadcast. See StreamYard’s Scenes guide.
Documented layout choices include Single, Cropped, Group, Spotlight, News, Screen, Picture-in-Picture, and Cinema. Group is intended for multiple participants; Spotlight suits a specific speaker. Custom layouts can include dynamic camera grids, camera slots, and media slots. StreamYard’s help page says up to eight custom layouts can be created across plans. See Layouts and Custom Layouts.
- Prepare the show’s base layout. Add the core branding and establish where names and comments belong.
- Create only the scenes the show needs. Set up opening, group conversation, host-and-guest, spotlight, screen-share, Q&A, and closing arrangements as applicable.
- Assign the people and media for each moment. Check how participants and shared material fit the selected layout before the broadcast.
- Check the layout’s fill behavior. StreamYard documents that single camera slots are filled before the dynamic camera grid. This matters when deciding which guest appears in a fixed position and which appear in a grid.
- Preview every transition. Confirm that the right people, content, and visual elements appear after switching scenes.
Plan around overlay and logo behavior
StreamYard’s documentation says video overlays do not persist in a scene after switching to another one, while logos cannot be assigned to just one scene and apply across the scene deck. Treat logos as global branding and check whether scene-specific overlays need to be added again. Preview each transition so a missing overlay or unexpected logo does not disrupt the show.

Plan guest capacity and backstage flow
StreamYard’s undated help page, retrieved in 2026, lists these backstage and on-screen maximums. Plans and packaging can change, so confirm the current limits before planning a broadcast around them. See How many people can I have on StreamYard?
| Plan listed by StreamYard | Maximum backstage participants | Maximum on-screen participants |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 6 | 6 |
| Core | 10 | 10 |
| Advanced | 15 | 10 |
| Business | 15 | 10 |
Guests joining with a guest link start backstage; viewers cannot see or hear them until they are added to the stage. For a rotating panel, decide who needs to be visible at once and who can wait backstage, and plan a handoff so the host is not improvising the roster while speaking.

Choose a workflow that fits the production
When selecting a live-production workflow, compare the practical requirements rather than assuming that a more elaborate overlay is better:
