Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To loop a language-learning podcast playlist on YouTube Live, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source: load the episode files in order, enable Loop Playlist, then send the encoder feed to a YouTube stream created in Live Control Room. The loop repeats the files, but it cannot keep a local computer, encoder, internet connection, or YouTube ingest running indefinitely on its own. Confirm your rebroadcast rights and test the full setup before scheduling a long broadcast.
Before you set up the broadcast
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the broadcast. YouTube live streaming tips
- Collect the episode files. Put the recordings you intend to broadcast somewhere OBS can access them, and decide their playback order. For a playlist of multiple files, OBS’s VLC Video source is the direct fit.
- Check rebroadcast and archive rights. Access to a show, an RSS feed, or permission to listen does not establish permission to stream or archive it. Confirm the rights for every episode, including any music and the resulting archive.
- Allow time to test. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality before and during the stream.
Set up a looping podcast playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC to be installed for its VLC Video source. Use the OBS documentation’s Media Sources guidance if you need to check the source requirements.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will broadcast. Open its properties and add the podcast episode files in the intended order.
- Enable the loop. Turn on Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties. When the final episode ends, OBS starts the playlist again. If you only need to repeat one local file, OBS’s regular Media Source has a separate Loop setting.
- Check playback in OBS. Start the playlist and confirm that the picture and sound behave as intended. Check the transitions between files as well as the beginning of the playlist; a correctly ordered list is important for a language lesson series.
Looping governs what happens when the media files finish; it does not restart OBS if the computer shuts down, restore a lost network connection, or guarantee YouTube ingest remains available.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. YouTube documents scheduling, reusing settings, auto-start/auto-stop, and DVR controls as stream-management options; scheduling by itself does not make the broadcast repeat indefinitely. See Manage live stream settings.
- Copy the connection details. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the details as required by the selected connection method. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the playlist is playing and that viewers can hear the intended audio.
- Start the YouTube broadcast when ready. Once the preview is correct and the scheduled stream is ready, start the live broadcast from YouTube if required by your stream settings. Monitor the stream rather than assuming the initial connection will last for the whole playlist.
For current YouTube encoder setup and connection instructions, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream and checking its audio and video quality; see YouTube live streaming tips.
Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match can replace the live picture with a placeholder; if the issue continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even if you have a licence for third-party material, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID to avoid interruptions. Details are in Copyright issues with live streams.

YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the livestream terms and conditions and get permission from the relevant rights holders where necessary. Educational subject matter or public availability does not make an episode automatically safe to rebroadcast.
Plan for long broadcasts and archives
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how a continuous event longer than 12 hours will be archived or divided, so do not promise a particular archive outcome for a longer broadcast. If an archive matters, plan a stream duration within the stated threshold or separately arrange and verify a recording workflow before going live. The loop in OBS can continue playing files, but the archive behavior is a separate YouTube consideration.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video source is missing or will not load | VLC is not installed, or OBS cannot access the media files. | Install VLC, restart OBS if needed, and confirm that the episode files are available at the locations listed in the source. |
| The playlist stops after the last episode | Loop Playlist is not enabled. | Open the VLC Video source properties and enable the playlist loop option. |
| YouTube receives no encoder feed | The stream URL or stream key may be incorrect, or the encoder has not started. | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the current details in Live Control Room and start the encoder again. Keep the stream key private. |
| The preview appears, but the YouTube broadcast has not begun | The stream may still need to be started in Live Control Room, depending on its settings. | Check the stream’s status and start the broadcast when the preview is correct and the scheduled stream is ready. |
| The stream is interrupted or shows a placeholder | YouTube may have detected third-party material, or the relevant channel may not be allowlisted despite a licence. | Review YouTube’s copyright notice, confirm the permissions and music rights, and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where appropriate. |
| The broadcast ends unexpectedly | A loop setting does not protect the computer, OBS, network connection, or YouTube ingest from failure. | Check the computer and connection, review OBS and Live Control Room status, and restart the encoder or broadcast if needed. For an extended run, monitor it rather than relying on the playlist loop alone. |
