How to Stream a Local Video File to YouTube with FFmpeg Without Re-encoding

A practical guide to stream-copying a local video file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, including compatibility checks, the command, setup, and fixes for common failures.

You can stream-copy a local video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg if its encoded video and audio are compatible with YouTube’s ingest format. Use -c copy to pass the compressed streams through without decoding or encoding, and -re to pace the file for live delivery. This does not make an incompatible file compatible: check the source and YouTube’s current encoder requirements before going live.

What “without re-encoding” means

FFmpeg streamcopy passes compressed audio and video packets through without decoding and encoding them again. The option -c copy selects this mode. It can avoid the processing and quality loss associated with a new encode, but it cannot resize, filter, change codecs, or repair unsuitable stream properties. Streamcopy may still remux the packets into a different container, and that operation can fail if required information is unavailable or the source streams do not fit the destination container. FFmpeg’s documentation explains streamcopy and its limitations.

Check whether your file is suitable

Before starting, confirm that the file contains the video and audio streams you intend to send, and that their codecs and stream properties work with the selected output format and YouTube ingest. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and recommended keyframe intervals. It also provides bitrate guidance by resolution and codec. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that every file can be copied directly. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions against your source file.

  • Streamcopy is appropriate when the source streams are already suitable and you do not need filters or conversion.
  • If you need to change a codec, resolution, frame rate, or other encoded property, streamcopy cannot do that; transcoding is a different workflow.
  • Even when the codecs appear suitable, the output muxer and ingest target must support the selected streams. A successful command cannot be guaranteed for an arbitrary file.

Set up YouTube Live and protect your stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you want to use. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating and starting a live stream.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the actual values and URL form provided in Live Control Room rather than an example from another source.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it; reset it if you think it has been exposed. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  4. Prefer RTMPS when configuring encoder ingest, consistent with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.

Run FFmpeg with streamcopy

Replace the input filename, server URL, and key placeholder with your own values. This is a general command pattern, not a tested command for every file or account:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f flv "rtmps://<YouTube-ingest-server>/<stream-key>"
  • -re reads a file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as FFmpeg can process it. FFmpeg documents rate-limited reading as useful when output needs to follow real time: FFmpeg documentation.
  • -i "input.mp4" identifies the local input file. Quote paths that contain spaces.
  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream from the input.
  • -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if one exists; the trailing ? makes that map optional. Remove it or choose a different stream mapping if your file’s audio layout requires another selection.
  • -c copy copies the selected streams without re-encoding.
  • -f flv explicitly selects the FLV output muxer used in this command pattern. The output container and streams must still be compatible with the chosen ingest path.
  • The final quoted value is the YouTube ingest URL and stream key provided for your stream. Keep the complete value private.

Start FFmpeg in a terminal. Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream health. If YouTube is set to require a manual start, verify picture and sound before selecting Go live. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the feed; consult its encoder guidance and streaming tips.

Streamcopy or transcode?

Approach What it does Use it when Trade-off
Streamcopy (-c copy) Passes the selected encoded packets through without decoding and encoding them again; may remux them into the output container. The source streams are compatible with the output container and YouTube ingest, and you do not need filters or conversion. Cannot change encoded properties or fix incompatibility; muxing can fail.
Transcoding Decodes and encodes streams, allowing changes such as codec or dimensions. The source does not meet ingest needs or requires processing. Uses encoding work and is not a no-re-encoding workflow.

FFmpeg’s documentation distinguishes streamcopy from filtering and encoding, while YouTube’s current encoder page provides the ingest criteria to check: FFmpeg documentation and YouTube encoder settings.

Stop the broadcast and check the archive

When you finish, stop the stream using the applicable Live Control Room controls and stop FFmpeg. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; because platform behavior can change, verify the current rule in YouTube Help.

Troubleshooting

FFmpeg cannot write the output header

This can indicate that the selected streams cannot be muxed into the chosen output format or that required stream information is unavailable. Confirm your source streams and output muxer are compatible. Adding -c copy does not change the codecs or properties.

YouTube does not receive a stream

Check that you copied the correct server URL and stream key from the intended Live Control Room stream, and that the output URL is formed exactly as required. If the key may have been exposed, reset it. YouTube describes stream-key handling in its live stream settings help.

The preview has no audio

The example maps only the first audio stream, and makes that selection optional. The file may have no audio stream, or its audio may be in a different stream. Check the file’s stream layout and map the intended audio stream. Streamcopy will not convert an unsupported audio codec.

The stream starts but is unhealthy or does not match ingest guidance

Compare the source’s codecs, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations for its resolution and codec. See YouTube encoder settings, then test and monitor the preview before relying on the broadcast. If a source property must change, that requires transcoding rather than streamcopy.
