Use FFmpeg’s subtitles video filter to render subtitle text into the video frames, then encode the filtered video and send it to YouTube using the live-stream settings and ingest details shown for your channel. The text becomes part of the picture: viewers cannot turn it off as a separate caption track.
What “playlist stream” means
First decide what you mean by a playlist. It could be a local list of clips played one after another into a single live encoder process, a YouTube playlist of videos that have already been published, or an HLS output playlist. These are different workflows. Generating an HLS playlist does not, by itself, send video to YouTube Live; use YouTube’s encoder workflow for a live ingest.
The example below demonstrates how to burn one external subtitle file into one video. It is not a complete playlist configuration: a local playlist with a different subtitle file for every clip needs additional orchestration for clip order, subtitle selection and timing, and any repeat or transition behavior.
Burn subtitles into one video with FFmpeg
- Choose the subtitle source. It can be an external text subtitle file such as SRT or ASS, or a subtitle stream inside a media file. If a file has multiple subtitle tracks, identify the one you want rather than assuming the first is correct.
- Check your FFmpeg build. The FFmpeg filters documentation says the
subtitlesfilter requires a build configured with--enable-libass. If the filter is unavailable, install or build an FFmpeg version that includes libass support. - Render and encode the video. For a video file named
input.mp4with a separatesubtitles.srt, this illustrative offline command writes a new file:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "subtitles=subtitles.srt" -c:v libx264 -c:a copy output.mp4This pattern assumes that the input and SRT file are usable, the FFmpeg build has the filter, and the libx264 encoder is available. It has not been established as a complete or tested YouTube playlist command. Because a video filter changes decoded frames, the video must be encoded; -c:v copy cannot apply the filter. Audio copying may work only when its codec and output container are compatible.

- Check the result before using it in a long stream. Verify subtitle timing and language, font availability, line breaks, and legibility at the intended output resolution. The appearance can differ if a needed font is unavailable.
For a media file containing more than one subtitle stream, FFmpeg’s filter supports stream selection. Consult the filter documentation for the filter’s stream-selection syntax and options; do not guess an index when the wrong track could be rendered.
Adapt the workflow for YouTube Live
For a live broadcast, configure the outgoing format and video/audio encoding for the live setup you intend to use, then send the output to the ingest destination and stream key exposed for your YouTube channel. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain creating a live stream with an encoder, and its live encoder settings page provides the current settings guidance. Check those pages and the channel’s Live Control Room rather than assuming one universal FFmpeg command or fixed setting applies to every account and destination.

Keep the stream key private. The offline command above creates a file; it does not configure a live encoder, select a playlist, or send a stream to YouTube. Likewise, an HLS output is a packaging workflow, not a substitute for configuring YouTube encoder ingest. FFmpeg documents HLS options in its formats documentation.
Choose between burned subtitles and captions

Plan a multi-clip playlist
For a local sequence of clips, decide whether to render each clip with its own subtitles before assembling the playlist or to process clips through a continuous FFmpeg encode. Pre-rendering makes each clip’s subtitle choice explicit, while a continuous process requires reliable subtitle selection and timing across clip boundaries. The basic single-file example does not supply the list-reading, per-clip subtitle mapping, looping, or transition logic for either design.
- Make a clip-to-subtitle map so every video uses the intended language and track.
- Check subtitle timing against the start of each clip; do not assume timestamps from one clip will work for another.
- Decide how the playlist should handle clip boundaries, repeats, and failures before leaving it unattended.
- Ensure the host can sustain the required video encoding workload. Filtering requires frame processing and encoding; no minimum hardware specification or hosting provider is established here.
- For YouTube delivery, verify the configured encoder output against current YouTube guidance and the destination shown in Live Control Room.
Troubleshooting
“No such filter: subtitles”
Your FFmpeg build may not include the filter or libass. Check the filter list and build configuration; use a build configured with libass support as described in the FFmpeg filters documentation.

Subtitles are missing or the wrong language appears
Confirm the external file path, or verify that the chosen input really contains text subtitles. If there are multiple subtitle streams, select the intended stream and language explicitly instead of relying on a default track.
The filter expression fails on a path or style value
Quote the filter expression and escape special characters according to both your shell and FFmpeg’s filtergraph syntax. The exact escaping differs by shell and operating system, so one quoting example should not be treated as portable everywhere.

Encoding is unexpectedly slow or CPU-heavy
Burning subtitles means processing video frames and encoding the result. Copying the compressed video stream cannot apply the visual filter. Actual throughput depends on the source, resolution, encoder, and hardware; no benchmark or universal minimum is established.
YouTube does not receive or accept the stream
Check that the live destination and stream key are the ones shown for the channel, and compare the outgoing format and encoding settings with YouTube’s current encoder settings and encoder setup instructions. An HLS playlist file alone is not a YouTube Live ingest configuration.
