To loop several local lecture videos in OBS, add them to a VLC Video Source, arrange them in order, and enable Loop Playlist. Connect OBS to YouTube with a stream URL and stream key, then check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before going live. This keeps the playlist running only while the computer, OBS, media files, and internet connection remain available.
Before you start
- Install OBS and VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video Source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. For a single video, OBS’s Media Source has a simpler Loop option. OBS Project: Media Sources
- Keep the lecture files in a stable local folder and confirm you have the rights needed to stream them.
- Make sure the YouTube channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube says it must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; its getting-started guidance says streamers must be at least 16. Check current requirements in YouTube live streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
Build and loop the lecture playlist in OBS
- Create a scene: In OBS, select or create a scene for the broadcast.
- Add the playlist source: In the Sources panel, select + → VLC Video Source. Give it a recognizable name and open its properties.
- Add and order the files: Add the local lecture files to the playlist in the order you want them played. Leave shuffle off if the lectures need to follow a fixed sequence.
- Enable looping: Turn on Loop Playlist. OBS will return to the beginning after the final item finishes.
- Choose scene-change behavior: Set the source’s visibility behavior to suit your scene workflow. OBS documents options including stop/restart, pause/unpause, and always play. Choose deliberately: changing scenes can otherwise interrupt or restart playback.
- Check the picture and sound: Confirm that the video fits the canvas and that lecture audio reaches the OBS mixer. Play a representative file through to check its audio and movement before connecting the live stream.
OBS’s VLC source uses VLC libraries for extended media support; supported formats and behavior can depend on the installed VLC version and the media file. See the OBS media-source documentation if a file will not load.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and configure a new or scheduled encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key as required by the selected configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube provides a reset control if a key is compromised. Manage live stream settings
- Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait until the incoming feed appears in Live Control Room, inspect the preview, and select Go live when it is ready. Follow YouTube’s current encoder steps at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Test the broadcast and keep it running
Before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended, test with audio and moving video similar to the actual lectures. Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor YouTube’s stream-health information. YouTube recommends testing the encoder in advance, using a reliable upload bitrate, and checking that a local recording is growing as expected. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the output you choose; the appropriate settings depend on the resolution and frame rate of your stream and your connection.
With this OBS method, playback and encoding run on your computer. The computer must stay on and connected, OBS must keep running, and the playlist files must remain accessible for the broadcast to continue. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive; do not rely on its live replay as the only record of a continuous broadcast.

Know the YouTube archive, DVR, and copyright limits
Archives are not a dependable full record of a 24/7 run
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording if you need a reliable copy of the lectures. Archive live streams
DVR does not guarantee viewers can rewind the whole broadcast
Viewers may pause and rewind when DVR is enabled, but YouTube says DVR can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the stream began. Turn on DVR on live streams

Use only content you are entitled to stream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may trigger a placeholder image, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even if you have a licence, a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for the live stream not to be interrupted. Copyright issues with live streams
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, matching the architecture of OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), then reopen OBS.
- A lecture file will not play: Confirm the file is accessible and try a format supported by the installed media libraries. Check the OBS media-source documentation for source behavior and supported formats.
- The playlist stops after the last lecture: Reopen the VLC Video Source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Lectures play in the wrong order: Reorder the playlist and leave shuffle off.
- Playback pauses or restarts after changing scenes: Review the VLC source’s visibility behavior and choose the documented stop/restart, pause/unpause, or always-play behavior that matches your scene setup.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Check that OBS is sending to the correct stream URL and that the stream key matches the YouTube stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The broadcast is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: Check YouTube’s copyright notices and resolve any rights or Content ID allowlisting issue with the rights owner.
- The local stream stops unexpectedly: Check that the computer is awake, OBS is still running, the source files remain available, and the internet connection can sustain the selected stream settings. YouTube advises monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
