FFmpeg is a supporting media tool: yt-dlp can use it to merge or post-process files, but FFmpeg itself is not the playlist downloader. If yt-dlp runs in Docker, map the host volume into the container and target the container-side path. Keep yt-dlp’s download archive on the same persistent volume so later runs can skip items already downloaded.
Only download content when you have permission. YouTube’s Terms of Service restrict downloading and use of content unless expressly authorized by the service or permitted in writing by YouTube and, where applicable, the rights holders.
Before you start: confirm the volume and your authorization
A mounted path is specific to your VPS and system configuration; there is no universal path that applies to every provider. Replace the example /srv/media below with the actual mount point on your server. Check that the volume is mounted, has enough free capacity for the playlist and selected formats, and is writable by the account that will run yt-dlp. The actual capacity, persistence behavior, performance, price, and backup options come from your VPS provider and volume configuration.
YouTube’s terms state that users may not “access, reproduce, download, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, alter, modify or otherwise use any part of the Service or any Content” except as expressly authorized by the service or with prior written permission from YouTube and, if applicable, the rights holders. See the YouTube Terms of Service. Technical access to a playlist is not permission to download it; proceed only for content you own or are otherwise authorized to save.

Download directly to the mounted host volume
- Verify the mount and write access. On the VPS, check the provider’s documented mount point and confirm it is present and writable for the job’s user before starting a long download. A small authorized test download or a simple write check can expose permission problems early. For general Linux mount and persistent-mount behavior, see the Linux fstab manual; use your provider’s documentation for its specific volume attachment procedure and paths.
- Install yt-dlp and FFmpeg in the environment that runs the download. yt-dlp handles playlist extraction and downloading. FFmpeg may be needed by yt-dlp to merge separate media streams or perform post-processing, so install it where yt-dlp can find it. Consult the yt-dlp documentation and FFmpeg command documentation for current installation and usage details.
- Run yt-dlp with an output path on the volume. Replace the example path and URL with your mounted directory and an authorized playlist URL:
yt-dlp -P "/srv/media" -o "%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "PLAYLIST_URL"
The template creates a playlist-named folder and prefixes each filename with its playlist index. yt-dlp creates missing directories in hierarchical output templates. Its output-template documentation explains the available path and filename fields. - Keep a download archive on the persistent volume for reruns. Add an archive path under the mounted directory:
yt-dlp --download-archive "/srv/media/archive.txt" -P "/srv/media" -o "%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "PLAYLIST_URL"
When you rerun yt-dlp with that same archive, it skips items already downloaded successfully and can fetch new playlist entries. See the download archive documentation. Keeping the archive elsewhere, such as on temporary storage, defeats that continuity if the temporary location is lost.
If yt-dlp runs in Docker
Docker processes see container paths, not host paths, unless you explicitly map a host directory into the container. Bind-mount the VPS directory and write to its destination inside the container. For example, with /srv/media as the host path and /downloads as the container path:

Replace YOUR_IMAGE with the image you use and ensure it contains yt-dlp and, if needed, FFmpeg. The source path for this default --mount behavior must already exist. Docker’s bind mount documentation describes mapping host paths into containers; files written to the mapped directory persist on the host volume.
- Use the right path: yt-dlp must write to
/downloads, the container-side destination, not assume that/srv/mediais visible inside the container. - Check permissions: bind mounts are writable by default, but the container’s process user still has to be allowed to write to the host filesystem. Ownership, user IDs, and group IDs can matter.
- Avoid confusing existing files: mounting over a non-empty directory inside the container obscures the directory’s prior contents for as long as the mount is in place. Do not rely on files that existed only in that container directory.
- Persist the archive too: save
archive.txtinside/downloadsso it lands on the host volume and survives container removal.
Choose direct execution or Docker

Docker can isolate the downloader’s runtime, but it adds a path mapping and permission layer. Neither approach determines the volume’s capacity, persistence across provider operations, performance, cost, or backup arrangements; check those details with your VPS provider.

Troubleshoot missing or misplaced files
- Confirm the host volume is mounted. If the mount is absent, a host process may write into an ordinary directory on the VPS disk instead of onto the intended volume.
- Check the path for the process type. A host process needs the host mount path; a container process needs the mapped container destination.
- Inspect Docker’s source and destination. Confirm that the bind mount’s source is the intended host directory and that yt-dlp writes to its destination inside the container.
- Check the downloader’s write permissions. Confirm the host user or container user can create files in the mounted directory; resolve ownership or permissions before retrying the full playlist.
- Check archive placement. If reruns download already-fetched items again, make sure the same
--download-archivefile is being used and that it resides on persistent storage. - Check the target directory for mount behavior. If expected container files seem to have disappeared, a bind mount may be obscuring contents that were previously in the mounted-over container directory.
