How to Stream a Podcast Archive to YouTube Live with Windows Task Scheduler

Use Windows Task Scheduler to launch an encoder for a scheduled YouTube Live podcast archive, with setup, account requirements, testing, and troubleshooting.

You can schedule Windows to launch a software encoder at a chosen time, then send a podcast archive to a scheduled YouTube Live broadcast. Set up and test the broadcast and encoder first; Task Scheduler starts the program, but YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow still requires you to check the preview and click Go live.

What you need before scheduling

  • A Windows PC that will be on and able to run the encoder at the scheduled time, with access to the podcast archive.
  • A software encoder that can accept your archive and produce the audio/video output YouTube requires. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming; the exact encoder and settings depend on your files and setup. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until just before the planned broadcast.
  • A YouTube broadcast, its stream URL and stream key, and a Windows Task Scheduler task configured to launch the encoder.

For an audio-only podcast file, plan how the encoder will supply a visual video signal as well as audio. A static image, waveform, or other visual is an implementation choice to validate with your chosen encoder and YouTube; no single method or setting is established here.

Set up the YouTube broadcast and encoder

  1. Enable live streaming if necessary. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. Allow for YouTube’s stated possible first-time wait of up to 24 hours.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, and choose its privacy and event settings.
  3. Configure the encoder. Choose software that can send the archive as live audio/video, then enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. YouTube instructs creators to enter these into the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, or shared files.
  4. Prepare the archive and launch action. Confirm the encoder can read the file from its intended path and determine how it must be launched. If startup requires more than one program or command, use a batch file as the single program that Task Scheduler launches; Microsoft documents that a scheduled task runs one program.

The available official guidance does not establish a tested FFmpeg command for this particular Windows podcast-archive workflow, a verified playlist or looping procedure, or a complete set of codec, bitrate, and keyframe recommendations. Do not assume an archive will loop or that an audio-only file will create valid video automatically. Validate the encoder’s input, output, and YouTube preview before relying on the schedule. YouTube’s API documentation describes stream ingestion configuration, including resolution and frame rate, but does not provide those missing recommendations for this workflow: LiveStreams reference.

Create the scheduled task in Windows

  1. Open Task Scheduler and create a task with a time-based trigger for the broadcast start time. Task Scheduler also supports startup and logon triggers, but a specific scheduled broadcast normally calls for a time trigger.
  2. Set the action to start the encoder, or the batch file that starts the encoder. Use the correct program path and provide any arguments required by that encoder. If the encoder needs a working directory or relative file paths, configure those so the task can find the archive when launched unattended.
  3. Choose the run account and logon behavior. Ensure the configured account can access the encoder, archive, and any related files. If the task is set to run only when that user is logged on, the user must be logged in at run time. Whether an encoder needs an interactive desktop depends on the encoder; verify this for your chosen software. Microsoft documents task creation and its logon options in schtasks create and describes Task Scheduler behavior in What’s New in Task Scheduler.
  4. Save the task and test it manually. Run it before the planned broadcast. Check that the encoder starts, opens the intended archive, produces audio/video, and reaches the YouTube preview. This is a prudent validation step, not a claim that any particular encoder has been tested here.
  5. At broadcast time, complete YouTube’s scheduled-stream step. Check the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live as YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions require. Scheduling the Windows task alone does not replace that step.

Plan duration and archiving

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need that documented automatic-archive behavior, plan a broadcast shorter than 12 hours; do not assume the same guarantee applies to a longer stream. The threshold is YouTube’s stated operational guidance, not a claim about every possible archive or account circumstance.

Troubleshoot before the scheduled start

  • The task runs but the encoder cannot find the podcast file: check the file path, working directory, permissions, and the account configured to run the task. Test using the task itself rather than only launching the encoder interactively.
  • The task does not launch the encoder: verify the action’s program path and arguments, confirm the account and logon settings, and try a manual task run. If the action needs multiple programs, put the sequence in a batch file and schedule that file as the one program.
  • The encoder opens but YouTube receives no stream: confirm the YouTube stream URL and key are entered correctly and that the key has not been exposed or replaced. Check the encoder’s output and YouTube preview.
  • YouTube preview has audio but no picture: an audio-only archive needs a visual video signal for a video live stream. Revisit the chosen visual method and validate the encoder’s actual output in the preview.
  • The scheduled broadcast is not live when expected: a Task Scheduler trigger starts the encoder; for a scheduled YouTube broadcast, also check the preview and click Go live.
  • First-time live streaming is unavailable: enable it in YouTube Studio ahead of time. YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
