To loop one recorded gaming VOD on YouTube Live, add the video to an OBS Studio scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, then send OBS’s output to YouTube using an encoder stream. The video plays again when it reaches the end. Check your channel’s live-stream eligibility and the rights to everything in the VOD before you start.
Check YouTube eligibility and content rights first
- Confirm live-stream access. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its guidance also says users must be at least 16 to live stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Clear every element in the VOD. Consider the gameplay footage, soundtrack, licensed music, overlays, and any other included material. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. A detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder and a warning; continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
- Check Content ID arrangements. Having a license may not be enough to prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm this with the rights holder when relevant.
Set up the VOD loop in OBS Studio
- Create a scene. In OBS Studio, add or select a scene for the broadcast.
- Add the recording. In the scene’s Sources area, select + > Media Source, give it a name, and choose the gaming VOD file. OBS documents support for local formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Enable the loop. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. This makes OBS replay the file when playback completes.
- Set the video layout. Match the source to the canvas and check the preview for cropping, black bars, or misplaced overlays. If the VOD and canvas have different aspect ratios, choose whether to fit the full image or fill the canvas; filling can crop the edges.
- Keep the two playback settings distinct. Loop repeats the file at its end. Restart playback when source becomes active starts the file again when the source becomes active or visible; it does not replace Loop for continuous repetition.
Connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, choose the live-stream setup flow, and select the encoder option. YouTube describes encoder streaming as a common setup for gaming and other streams. Studio’s labels can change over time; use the current encoder setup and stream details shown for your channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream key securely. Use the stream key and server details presented in Studio in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Start OBS streaming. Begin the stream from OBS, then return to Studio and wait for the incoming feed and live preview/status. Confirm that the VOD is visible and playing before sharing the event with viewers.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch the OBS output and YouTube status, especially if the stream will run for a long time. This local setup depends on the computer and its network connection remaining available; the cited platform guidance does not promise unattended uptime.
Single-file loop or playlist?
For one gaming VOD, use a Media Source with Loop. OBS also documents a VLC Video source for playlists, but that adds no benefit when you only want a single file repeated. The YouTube API distinguishes the incoming liveStream feed and delivery settings from the viewer-facing liveBroadcast; a typical creator can use Studio’s encoder setup without working with the API directly. Troubleshooting the loop and live feed
- The VOD stops after one play: Reopen the Media Source properties and verify Loop is enabled. The restart-on-activation option alone does not make playback repeat at the end.
- The source is blank or will not play: Confirm the selected file path is correct and that OBS can read the local file. OBS lists MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM among its supported formats; a supported extension does not guarantee every individual file will decode correctly.
- The image is cropped or has bars: Check the OBS canvas and source dimensions, then adjust the source’s fit or fill behavior in the preview. Preserve the full frame if cropping would hide game information or rights notices.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Check that OBS is streaming to the server and stream key shown in the current Studio encoder setup. Ensure the key has not been mistyped, changed, or reset, then check OBS for a connection error.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced: Review YouTube’s copyright warning and the VOD’s rights. If the content is licensed, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID.
- The stream ends when the computer or connection stops: OBS is running locally, so this method requires the computer to stay powered and the network connection to remain available. Use monitoring for a local setup, or consider a cloud option if you need the playback host separate from your computer.
