To stream a still image with music continuously to YouTube, loop the image and audio as FFmpeg inputs, encode them as a live-compatible video and audio feed, and send that feed to the RTMPS address and stream key for your YouTube broadcast. The command below is a starting point, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: you must choose output dimensions, test the feed in YouTube Studio, and plan to recover from process or network failures.

What you need before starting

  • FFmpeg installed with the image input, H.264 encoder, AAC encoder, and RTMPS output support. Check the build with ffmpeg -version; available options can vary by build.
  • A still image and music file that open correctly and that you are authorized to use in a live stream.
  • A YouTube channel that can create encoder-based live streams, plus the RTMPS ingestion address and stream key shown for the specific stream in YouTube Studio.
  • A stable internet connection with upload capacity for the chosen video and audio bitrates, plus room for network variation.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted form of RTMP, for this type of encoder connection. Use the ingestion details YouTube provides rather than guessing a generic endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance and the LiveStreams API resource.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder-based live stream.
  2. Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for that stream. The YouTube API describes these as the ingestion address and stream name; encoders commonly combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the exact values YouTube supplies.
  3. Keep the key private. It functions like a password that lets an encoder send a feed to your stream. Do not put an active key in a public example, screenshot, shared log, or command history accessible to others. Reset it if exposed. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  4. Plan to test the feed before making it public. YouTube’s controls and channel eligibility can change, so follow the current prompts in Studio.

Run FFmpeg to loop the image and music

Replace image.jpg, music.mp3, RTMPS_INGEST_URL, and STREAM_KEY with your actual filenames and YouTube stream details. Keep the key private; avoid saving a command containing it in a location others can read.

ffmpeg -re -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i image.jpg
  -re -stream_loop -1 -i music.mp3
  -c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
  -b:v 2.5M -maxrate 2.5M -bufsize 5M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'

This is an editorial starting command, not one copied from FFmpeg or YouTube documentation and not a tested result. FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which is useful for real-time output from files. -loop 1 loops the still-image input, while -stream_loop -1 repeats the music input indefinitely. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg filters documentation, and confirm option behavior for your installed build.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose the output size deliberately

The command does not force a standard resolution: the image dimensions determine the video dimensions unless you add a scale filter. A large or unusually proportioned source image can therefore produce output that is not the resolution you intended. Resize or crop deliberately if needed, and preserve the image’s aspect ratio where practical. YouTube’s bitrate examples for two common 30 fps outputs are:

Output YouTube-listed video bitrate range
720p at 30 fps 2–6 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 0.3–3 Mbps

These are recommendations from YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed in 2026—not guarantees of picture quality, stream stability, or audience reach. The example command sets a 2.5 Mbps video bitrate; select a value appropriate to your actual output resolution and upload connection. YouTube recommends testing the connection and monitoring live health.

Set keyframes and audio for YouTube

The example runs at 30 fps with -g 60, which makes the nominal GOP 60 frames, or about two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. If you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP so its duration remains within that guidance. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps; the example uses AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR rate control among its encoder guidance; this example uses H.264 and AAC.

Check the preview and start the broadcast

  1. Start FFmpeg and watch its output for errors. Confirm it is producing frames and audio rather than exiting immediately.
  2. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and inspect both picture and sound. Confirm that the image is framed correctly and the music is audible.
  3. Read the stream health status and resolve any warnings before promoting the feed. YouTube’s health status messages cover problems such as low bitrate, GOP length, unsupported audio, and missing or inconsistent streams.
  4. Start or confirm the broadcast using the controls and settings shown for your stream. YouTube represents the incoming feed and the viewer-facing broadcast as separate concepts: its API distinguishes a liveStream from a liveBroadcast and documents a 24/7 feed use case. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

What it takes to keep a feed running 24/7

Looping files makes the media repeat; it does not make the whole service fault-proof. FFmpeg can exit, lose network access, encounter an unreadable file, or fail to reconnect. YouTube recommends test runs and monitoring stream health and messages; its live streaming tips explain the value of testing and monitoring.

For a do-it-yourself setup

  • Run FFmpeg on a computer or server that can stay powered and connected. Plan for power and network interruptions.
  • Use a process supervisor or equivalent restart mechanism so an unexpected FFmpeg exit can be detected and handled. Keep logs and arrange alerts if unattended operation matters; these are general operational precautions, not YouTube or FFmpeg uptime guarantees.
  • Check the Live Control Room periodically. A process that appears to be running locally may still be sending a feed YouTube considers unhealthy.
  • FFmpeg’s all-options documentation includes an RTMP FIFO muxer recovery example for temporary network failures. It illustrates a possible recovery mechanism, but does not guarantee uninterrupted service or establish that the exact options work with every FFmpeg build or RTMPS configuration. See FFmpeg’s all-options documentation.

Preflight checklist

  • Both media files open, and the music contains usable sound.
  • Your FFmpeg build supports the required input options, encoders, and output protocol.
  • The output dimensions and frame rate are deliberate rather than assumed from the example.
  • The chosen bitrate is sustainable on the upload connection; the keyframe interval is two seconds if possible and no more than four seconds.
  • You have used the stream’s actual RTMPS address and private key from Live Control Room.
  • You have tested privately or unlisted, checked preview audio and video, and cleared health messages before promoting the broadcast.
  • You have permission to stream both the image and music. YouTube’s technical setup guidance cannot determine whether a particular file is licensed for your channel; rights remain your responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does FFmpeg have to run all the time for this method?

Yes. In this do-it-yourself setup, FFmpeg is the process sending the live feed; if it stops, the feed can stop.
