The two settings serve different purposes: YouTube channel verification enables live streaming, while 2-Step Verification adds a sign-in security factor. To go live, prepare your playlist in vMix, confirm the channel is eligible, connect vMix to YouTube, and check the preview before starting the broadcast.
What 2-Step Verification does—and what YouTube requires
Google Account 2-Step Verification protects sign-in by asking for another verification factor. It is separate from YouTube channel verification, which is the step YouTube identifies for enabling live streaming. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance also says a channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Those requirements do not make 2-Step Verification a universal prerequisite for livestreaming; a workplace or account-specific policy may require it separately. Prepare the playlist in vMix
Add your video files as vMix inputs and arrange them as a playlist, setting the intended order, start times, durations, and transitions. vMix documents playlist functionality in its training videos and version 29 user guide. The available documentation confirms these capabilities but does not establish every current click in the playlist editor, so use the controls shown in your installed vMix version rather than relying on guessed menu paths.
- Confirm each input points to the intended media file and that the sequence and durations are correct.
- Check that the production output includes the playlist content and the audio you intend viewers to hear.
- Play through the sequence in vMix before broadcasting, especially if transitions or timed starts matter.
Confirm the channel can go live
- Verify the YouTube channel if it has not already been verified for live streaming. YouTube describes phone verification as the live-streaming enablement step.
- Check that the channel has no live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days.
- Sign in to the Google Account associated with the channel. If 2-Step Verification is required by your organization or account policy, keep it enabled; it remains a separate sign-in control, not a substitute for channel verification.
Choose how vMix connects to YouTube
vMix documents two connection routes. The YouTube Studio route gives more stream settings and scheduling control; the in-app Live Stream Now route can create a stream or select an existing scheduled event. The in-app instructions date from 2021, so labels may differ in newer releases; check the current interface if they do. See vMix’s YouTube Live guide and its Live Stream Now instructions.

Route A: create or schedule in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the stream settings appropriate to your broadcast.
- Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key from the stream setup.
- In vMix, open the streaming configuration, choose the custom or manual destination option, and enter the server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields. Match the configuration to the details YouTube provides; do not substitute a different stream key.
- Use this route when you want to set up the event and its scheduling in YouTube Studio before connecting the encoder.
Route B: use vMix’s YouTube Live Stream Now destination
- Choose the YouTube Live Stream Now destination in vMix.
- Complete the browser sign-in and authorization flow if prompted.
- Create a stream from vMix or select an event you already scheduled, then confirm the selected event and stream details before starting.
This route keeps more of the connection setup inside vMix. If you need the broader stream settings and scheduling controls described for the Studio route, create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio instead.
Keep the stream key private
YouTube describes a stream key as being like the stream’s password and address. Do not publish it, send it casually, or include it in a public screenshot. If someone exposes it, a channel owner or manager can reset the key in Live Control Room; update the key in vMix afterward so the encoder can connect with the replacement. Preview, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Allow setup time: YouTube recommends configuring the encoder two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes ahead.
- Start the vMix stream and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the expected video and audio arrive before making the event public or relying on the broadcast.
- Monitor audio and video continuously while live. Confirm that the playlist advances as intended and that the audience is seeing the correct output.
- Check that your available upload capacity exceeds the combined bitrate of the stream, with headroom for network variation. YouTube’s streaming tips cover encoder and connection preparation.
Troubleshoot common connection problems
vMix cannot start the stream or YouTube shows no preview
Confirm the channel is verified for live streaming and has no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Then check that vMix is using the correct YouTube event, server URL, and stream key, and wait for the Live Control Room preview before proceeding.
The stream key may be wrong or exposed
Copy the key from the intended YouTube stream again and replace it in vMix. If the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new value.

vMix reports insufficient authentication scopes
vMix’s troubleshooting guidance for the “Request had insufficient authentication scopes” error says to sign in again through vMix and grant the requested “Manage your YouTube Account” permission. Grant it only if you expect vMix to operate your YouTube account. See vMix’s authentication-scope troubleshooting page.
Video or audio is missing or the playlist is not advancing
Check the vMix production output, playlist order, source files, durations, and audio routing, then run the sequence locally and inspect the YouTube preview again. The preview helps distinguish a playlist or production issue in vMix from a problem that occurs after the signal reaches YouTube.

Copyright and playlist checks before going public
Only include media you have the rights or permission to stream. A playlist that plays correctly in vMix is not, by itself, proof that its videos, music, or other material are cleared for a YouTube broadcast. Review the applicable YouTube rules and any permissions attached to the content before starting a public stream.
