How to Stream a YouTube Live Loop from a USB Drive Playlist

A USB drive holds the videos, but a computer running OBS plays and streams them. Here’s how to loop one file or a playlist on YouTube Live.

You can stream videos stored on a USB drive to YouTube Live by connecting the drive to a computer, loading the files in OBS, setting one video or a playlist to loop, and sending OBS’s output to YouTube with your stream URL and key. The USB drive stores the files; the computer still has to play and transmit them.

Before you start

  • A computer that can run OBS: The drive alone cannot broadcast. OBS plays the local media and sends the encoded stream to YouTube.
  • Video files you can broadcast: You need the necessary rights to use both the video and audio. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a stream can be interrupted or terminated if copyrighted material is detected. A license may not be enough to avoid interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its live-streaming terms.
  • A working USB connection: Connect the drive and make sure the computer can read the files before configuring OBS. Keep the drive connected and available throughout the broadcast. This is practical advice for using local files, not a guarantee of USB-drive reliability.
  • YouTube Live access: YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and meet its current minimum-age requirement. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so set it up ahead of your planned stream. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and setup page for the rules that apply to your account.

Choose how OBS should loop the files

What you want to play OBS source and setting What to know
One video, repeated Media Source; enable Loop Use this when the broadcast repeats a single file.
Several videos in a set order, repeated VLC Video source; enable Loop Playlist VLC must be installed for this source to appear. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.

These are the source options documented by OBS’s media-source guide. The documentation does not establish that USB storage is more or less reliable than internal storage, or specify a recommended USB capacity or speed.

Set up the loop and send it to YouTube

  1. Connect the drive and check the files. Open the USB drive on the computer running OBS and confirm that the videos you plan to use are accessible. Leave the drive connected during the stream so OBS can continue reading the media.
  2. Add the right source in OBS. For one repeating video, add a Media Source, select the file on the USB drive, and enable Loop. For multiple videos, add a VLC Video source, select or create the playlist in the source settings, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first if the VLC source is missing; match its 64-bit or 32-bit version to OBS.
  3. Get the YouTube connection details. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions describe this connection. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream.
  4. Enter the details in OBS. Open OBS’s stream settings, choose YouTube or the custom-server option as appropriate for the interface, and enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Avoid sharing screenshots or recordings that expose the key.
  5. Preview before going live. Confirm the intended video appears in OBS and that its audio is audible. Start the encoder from OBS, then check Live Control Room’s preview and status before confirming the public broadcast.
  6. Check the watch page. Once live, open the public YouTube watch page and verify that the expected video and audio are playing. Monitor the broadcast rather than assuming a successful OBS start means viewers can see and hear it correctly; YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality in its live-streaming tips.

Keep the stream key and broadcast rights safe

Protect the stream key

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public playlist, overlay, chat message, screenshot, or video. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update OBS with the new key.

Check rights for every item in the playlist

Permission to keep a file on a USB drive is not the same as permission to broadcast it. Check the rights for every video and audio track in the playlist. YouTube may interrupt a live stream when it detects third-party material, and a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for a licensed stream to avoid an interruption.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The video does not appear in OBS: Confirm the USB drive is connected, the selected path points to the right file, and the computer can open it. If the drive has been removed or its path has changed, reconnect it and select the file again.
  • The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list again.
  • The playlist plays once instead of repeating: Open the source’s settings and enable Loop Playlist. For a single-file Media Source, enable Loop instead.
  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that OBS has the stream URL and current stream key from the correct YouTube stream. Confirm the encoder is started and that YouTube Live is enabled for the channel.
  • You cannot enable live streaming yet: Check channel verification, any live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days, and YouTube’s current age requirement. If this is the channel’s first live-stream setup, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • The stream is interrupted after it starts: Check YouTube’s notices in Live Control Room. A detected third-party video or audio track may cause interruption even when you believe you have a license; confirm that the rights cover live broadcast and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
  • The OBS preview works but the public page is wrong or silent: Check the Live Control Room preview and the watch page, then verify the selected media and audio in OBS. Do not rely only on the local preview.
