Yes. In OBS Studio, add the video and audio files as separate Media Sources in the same scene, enable Loop for each, then send the combined scene to YouTube Live. Viewers receive one mixed program—not independently selectable audio and video files.

What you need before setting up the loop

  • An OBS Studio installation and the local video and audio files you intend to stream. OBS Media Source supports common video formats such as MP4, TS, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV; check the current OBS documentation and your installed version if a file will not load. OBS Media Sources
  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions from the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  • Rights to use both files in a public live stream and any resulting archive. YouTube’s stream setup materials address content rights, but only the rights holder or an authorized party can determine whether your particular files are cleared. YouTube stream settings

Set up separate audio and video loops in OBS

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS, use the scene that should make up the outgoing broadcast. Add the video using Sources → + → Media Source, select the local file, and enable Loop in its properties. Position and size it so it fills the canvas as intended. OBS explains its source and media-source controls in the Sources Guide and Media Sources documentation.
  2. Add the separate audio file. In the same scene, select Sources → + → Media Source again, choose the audio-only file, and enable Loop. Confirm the source is not muted and that its level meter moves in the OBS Audio Mixer while it plays. The OBS Quick Start Guide recommends checking audio and output settings before relying on a setup.
  3. Connect OBS to the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Choose public, private, or unlisted visibility according to whether this is a broadcast or rehearsal. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as password-like, so do not share it; reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. Manage live stream settings and Get started with live streaming.
  4. Choose YouTube-compatible output settings. Use an OBS YouTube preset where available, and follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the selected resolution, frame rate, codecs, keyframe interval, bitrate, and protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Leave upload capacity above the combined outgoing bitrate; YouTube recommends 20% headroom. The applicable settings vary by resolution and protocol, so use the values in YouTube encoder settings rather than guessing a universal bitrate. See also YouTube streaming tips.
  5. Rehearse before the real broadcast. YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes ahead. Start OBS, inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview, and confirm the audio is audible, the video fills the canvas, the stream health is acceptable, and audio and video remain in sync through a loop boundary. After ending the event on YouTube, stop the encoder. YouTube live streaming tips and the OBS Quick Start Guide.

How separate files behave once viewers tune in

OBS lets you manage the video and audio as separate sources, but it encodes the scene as one outgoing program for YouTube. That means viewers do not get separate, user-selectable files or tracks through this setup. OBS’s multiple-audio-track guidance concerns local recording and editing; standard video players generally play one audio track at a time. OBS Sources Guide, OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide, and YouTube encoder setup.

Loop boundaries and synchronization

Each Media Source loops when its own file finishes. If the audio and video durations differ, their loop points can drift apart; independent Loop controls do not guarantee synchronized restarts. This follows from how the separate source loops work, rather than from a YouTube synchronization guarantee. If timing must stay exact, align the durations before streaming or create one synchronized master file.

Using a playlist instead of two looping sources

If the goal is to rotate through multiple clips, OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist and loop the playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. Use that option when the playlist—not an independently looping audio file—is the intended playback sequence. OBS Media Sources.

Archives, unattended streams, and monitoring

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuously running loop will produce one complete, indefinitely long archive; plan when to end or restart the event if you need a particular recording. YouTube encoder setup.

OBS is running on your computer in this workflow, so the computer and its internet connection must remain available while it sends the stream. Monitor the OBS audio and video and the YouTube Live Control Room stream health during the broadcast. For a long session, also check that any local recording you are making continues to grow; a live stream and an archive are separate concerns.

Troubleshooting common loop problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive the stream Incorrect event details, stream URL, or key; live streaming may not yet be activated or the channel may have a restriction. Copy the URL and key from the intended event in YouTube Studio, verify channel eligibility, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Reset an exposed key. YouTube live setup and stream settings.
Audio is missing The audio source is muted, not playing, or not reaching the mixer. Check source playback and mute state, then confirm the Audio Mixer meter moves. Rehearse in the YouTube preview before the public stream. OBS Quick Start Guide.
Audio and video drift after a loop The files have different durations and loop independently. Align their durations or combine them into one synchronized master file if the boundary must remain in sync.
The image is cropped, letterboxed, or the wrong size The source dimensions or transform do not match the OBS canvas. Adjust the video source in the scene and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
Stream health warns about connection or bitrate Upload capacity may be insufficient for the outgoing bitrate, or output settings may not match YouTube’s current guidance. Check the chosen resolution’s YouTube encoder settings and preserve the recommended 20% upload headroom. Encoder settings and streaming tips.
The VLC playlist source is unavailable VLC is not installed. Install VLC, then check whether the VLC Video source appears in OBS. OBS Media Sources.
