How to Stream from Wirecast to BoxCast

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send a Wirecast production to BoxCast, schedule a broadcast in the BoxCast Dashboard, then configure Wirecast to send it by RTMP or SRT. If you have a BoxCaster, you can instead route Wirecast’s secondary display output to that hardware encoder. For the direct software workflows, use the server details BoxCast provides for your source; never share your stream key.

Before you connect Wirecast

  • Schedule the BoxCast broadcast in the Dashboard before using the documented RTMP or SRT workflows. BoxCast says a broadcast will go live at its scheduled time even if Wirecast starts sending earlier. See BoxCast’s Wirecast + BoxCast guide.
  • In the Dashboard, create or select the source you intend to use. The source details—not a made-up or reused example—supply the RTMP server URL and stream key or the SRT connection parameters. BoxCast’s Dashboard source instructions describe adding an encoder source.
  • Keep the stream key private. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to that source; do not show it in screenshots or share it in public instructions.

BoxCast recommends starting Wirecast two to three minutes before the scheduled start in its Wirecast-specific guide. Its general RTMP encoder guide gives a different lead-time recommendation—ten to fifteen minutes—so treat these as contextual suggestions, not a universal technical requirement. For this pairing, allow enough time to confirm the incoming signal before the event.

Method 1: Connect Wirecast to BoxCast with RTMP

  1. Create or select an RTMP source: In the BoxCast Dashboard, open Sources and create or select an RTMP source. Copy its Server URL and Stream Key. If you do not see an RTMP option, follow BoxCast’s Add a New RTMP Source instructions.
  2. Set Wirecast’s destination: In Wirecast, open Output > Output Settings and choose RTMP Server as the destination.
  3. Enter the source details: Paste the BoxCast server URL into the address field and the stream key into the stream field. If your Wirecast version presents a single combined URL field, use the format its interface requests. Save the destination if you plan to reuse it.
  4. Schedule and start: Confirm the broadcast is scheduled in BoxCast, then press Stream in Wirecast early enough to check the signal before the scheduled start.

RTMP or RTMPS URL?

BoxCast says generated RTMP URLs default to RTMPS. Its Wirecast-specific guide notes that standard Wirecast versions do not support RTMPS and advises removing the “s” from the server URL when necessary. For example, the RTMP form is rtmp://rtmp.boxcast.com/live, rather than rtmps://rtmp.boxcast.com/live. Check whether your installed Wirecast version supports RTMPS before changing the URL; use the protocol your version and BoxCast source can both accept. BoxCast covers URL setup in its RTMP source guide.

RTMP codec

For third-party RTMP ingestion, BoxCast’s general encoder guidance says it supports H.264 and does not currently support H.265/HEVC. If the connection is established but the video does not arrive as expected, check Wirecast’s encoding format against that guidance: Any RTMP-Compatible Encoder + BoxCast.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Method 2: Connect Wirecast to BoxCast with SRT

  1. Get the SRT values: In the BoxCast Dashboard, open Sources, select the SRT source, and open its Wirecast configuration values.
  2. Choose SRT in Wirecast: Open Output > Output Settings and set the destination to SRT: Secure Reliable Transport.
  3. Enter the connection parameters: Copy the Dashboard’s Address, Port, Passphrase, and Stream ID into the corresponding Wirecast fields. Leave the passphrase blank if encryption is disabled for the source.
  4. Set audio before going live: Configure encoder audio as stereo, 48 kHz. BoxCast warns that other values may cause missing audio or audio that sounds incorrect to viewers.
  5. Schedule and start Wirecast: Schedule the BoxCast broadcast, then start Wirecast early enough to confirm the feed is ready before the event begins.

The parameters and audio instruction above are from BoxCast’s Wirecast-specific setup guide. Treat the passphrase and stream ID as private connection details.

Method 3: Send Wirecast’s display output to a BoxCaster

This is an optional hardware route, not a requirement for the direct RTMP or SRT methods. Wirecast sends its program output through a secondary display output to a BoxCaster, which handles encoding. BoxCast says its hardware encoder can relieve the computer of video and audio encoding work, use BoxCast communication protocols, and provide BoxCast support with additional broadcast data and logs. The guide does not establish that hardware is best for every setup.

  1. Connect a compatible secondary video output from the computer running Wirecast to the BoxCaster. Check the computer’s output, the encoder’s input, and cable compatibility before relying on this path.
  2. In Wirecast, open Output > Multi-Viewer Output > Configure Displays.
  3. Set the output monitor to 1920×1280, choose Full Screen, and set labels to Do Not Draw Labels.
  4. Select Live, then choose the appropriate display output for the BoxCaster connection.
  5. Confirm the BoxCaster is receiving the intended Wirecast program output and that the BoxCast broadcast is scheduled.

These display settings follow BoxCast’s Wirecast + BoxCast instructions. An HDMI cable may be needed for a compatible hardware connection, but it is not required for direct RTMP or SRT streaming.

Which connection method should you choose?

Method What you enter or need Consider it when
RTMP BoxCast source’s server URL and stream key; confirm RTMP/RTMPS compatibility and H.264 encoding. Your BoxCast account has an RTMP source and you want a direct software connection.
SRT Address, port, stream ID, and passphrase if encryption is enabled; stereo 48 kHz audio. Your Dashboard provides an SRT source and you can configure the required connection values.
BoxCaster hardware A compatible secondary video output, connection cable, and BoxCaster; configure Wirecast’s display output. You already have the encoder or want the hardware workflow’s operational advantages described by BoxCast.

BoxCast’s setup pages provide configuration guidance, not a controlled benchmark proving one method outperforms the others in every venue. Choose based on which source your account exposes, your audio and protocol settings, the computer’s encoding capacity, and whether compatible BoxCaster hardware is available.

Troubleshooting Wirecast-to-BoxCast problems

Wirecast cannot connect to the server

  • Verify that you copied the current server URL and key from the correct BoxCast source and placed them in the right fields.
  • If the URL starts with rtmps:// and your Wirecast version cannot connect, check that version’s RTMPS support. BoxCast advises removing the “s” and using the RTMP form when necessary.
  • Confirm that the BoxCast broadcast is scheduled and that Wirecast is sending to the matching source.

The stream connects, but there is no audio or it sounds wrong

For the BoxCast SRT Wirecast workflow, set audio to stereo at 48 kHz. BoxCast specifically warns that other values may result in no audio or incorrect-sounding audio. Check the audio encoder settings before restarting the feed.

Video fails over RTMP

Check that Wirecast is encoding H.264. BoxCast’s general third-party RTMP guidance says H.265/HEVC is not currently supported for this ingestion path. Also recheck that the server URL and stream key belong to the selected source.

The broadcast is not live at the expected time

Check the scheduled broadcast time in the BoxCast Dashboard and verify Wirecast is already sending to its source. BoxCast says the scheduled broadcast can go live even if the encoder starts earlier, so sending early is not itself a reason the broadcast should start ahead of schedule. Allow time for a signal check; BoxCast’s Wirecast guide recommends two to three minutes of lead time.

The BoxCaster shows the wrong picture or no picture

Confirm the secondary display is the one connected to the encoder, and recheck the Wirecast multi-viewer output settings: 1920×1280, Full Screen, Do Not Draw Labels, and Live. Also verify physical output and cable compatibility.
