What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. A Raspberry Pi can host playback and an encoder that sends a prerecorded gameplay file to YouTube Live, but the right settings depend on the Pi, the file, and your upload connection. Check whether the file’s existing audio and video streams can be sent without transcoding; if not, test the Pi’s ability to encode the chosen output before scheduling a broadcast.
How the setup works
The Pi plays the stored video and sends an encoded stream to YouTube’s live ingest service. In YouTube Live Control Room, you create or select a stream, then configure your encoder with the YouTube server address and stream key. Viewers see that incoming feed as a live broadcast; it is not a camera stream.
YouTube supports encoder-based live broadcasts. Its live streaming setup guidance says that enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until broadcast day.
Check the video and the Pi before choosing settings
Inspect the VOD
Before configuring an encoder, identify the file’s video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, duration, and whether it contains audio. The key decision is whether the file’s existing streams match a format your encoder can send under YouTube’s ingest requirements. If they do, a workflow may be able to pass the streams through; if they do not, the video or audio may need encoding. Compatibility depends on the actual file and software, so do not assume a file can be relayed unchanged.

Account for model and workload
Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation describes FFmpeg/libav support for encoding audio and video and saving or streaming output over a network. It also describes hardware H.264 encoding in the rpicam-vid camera workflow when available. These camera-workflow details do not establish that every Pi accelerates every FFmpeg job, or that a particular model can transcode a gameplay VOD at a given resolution and frame rate.
The same documentation says Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders in that camera stack. Its low-latency option trades coding efficiency for latency and may affect maximum frame rate; the documentation’s 1080p30 statement applies to the described camera encoding context, not a universal gameplay-file benchmark. Playback decoding, file format, audio handling, output profile, cooling, and software build can all affect results. Test the actual file on the actual Pi you plan to use.

YouTube Live settings to target
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder offers it; YouTube recommends it as the encrypted option.
The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s current ingest recommendations and minimums, not promises that a Pi or internet connection can sustain them:

| Output profile | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
YouTube also lists 10 Mbps recommended and 4 Mbps minimum for 1080p30 AV1 or H.265. Choose an output the Pi can encode or pass through reliably and the upload connection can maintain. YouTube recommends checking upload speed, testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health; a headline bitrate alone does not establish a reliable broadcast.
Set up and test the broadcast
- Enable live streaming in advance. If the channel has never gone live, enable the feature in YouTube Studio and allow for the possibility that activation takes up to 24 hours.
- Create or select the stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or choose the broadcast and copy its ingest server address and stream key. Keep the key private; do not put it in a public script, screenshot, shell history, or support post.
- Choose a file-appropriate workflow. Use an encoder that can read the VOD and send it to YouTube. Decide whether the existing audio and video can be passed through or need encoding based on the file and target profile. The official guidance does not provide one Pi-specific command for every combination of file, encoder, and installed FFmpeg build, so do not copy a generic command without checking its arguments against your media and software.
- Set the output profile. Configure a supported video codec, constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. Start conservatively—720p30 or 1080p30 only if the Pi sustains it in a local test—and set bitrate in line with YouTube’s table and measured upload capacity.
- Run a representative test. Play a section with moving gameplay and audio. Watch the Pi for overload or dropped frames, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. If performance or health is poor, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, then retest.
- End and verify. Stop the encoder to end the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; after processing, check the channel’s Live tab in YouTube Studio.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is using the server address and stream key for the selected broadcast, that the stream is enabled, and that the Pi has a working network connection. Treat the key as a secret and replace it if it has been exposed.
- Stream health reports instability: Compare the configured bitrate with what the upload connection can sustain, then test at a lower bitrate or output profile. A recommended ingest rate is not a guarantee of available home upload bandwidth.
- The Pi drops frames or struggles to encode: Confirm whether the job is transcoding rather than passing through compatible streams. Lower the resolution or frame rate and retest; do not infer performance from camera-encoding claims or another Pi model.
- Video plays but audio is missing or wrong: Recheck that the source contains an audio stream, that the encoder selects it, and that the chosen output audio codec is AAC or MP3.
- The stream starts but quality is inconsistent: Test with representative gameplay movement and monitor both Pi workload and YouTube stream health. A still menu or short test may not reveal problems that appear during sustained motion.
- The archive is not immediately visible: Allow YouTube time to process the recording, then look in the channel’s Live tab. Automatic archiving guidance applies to streams under 12 hours.
Where the Raspberry Pi method fits
A Pi-based relay can make sense when you want to use hardware you own and are comfortable testing a file-specific encoder setup. It also means you are responsible for local playback, processing where required, the network connection, and recovery if the Pi or connection fails. No official source establishes one best Pi model, a universal FFmpeg command, or an equivalent benchmark across Pi models for gameplay VOD relaying.

OBS documentation notes that encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect system demands; its basic requirements do not guarantee a particular workload will run well. The reviewed guidance does not establish OBS as a supported Raspberry Pi solution for this specific prerecorded-VOD workflow.
