Use rain audio you recorded yourself or have permission to broadcast worldwide, then decide whether to run the encoder on a computer or use a cloud service. Plan for two important YouTube limits: first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate, and streams longer than 12 hours may not be saved as replays.
Choose a way to keep the stream running
YouTube accepts live feeds from encoder software on a computer or from standalone encoder hardware. For a continuous ambience stream, the key practical difference is whether a device at home must stay on.
| Approach | What runs the stream | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | Software on a computer, or standalone encoder hardware, sends the feed to YouTube. | The encoder device and its internet connection need to remain available for the stream to continue. YouTube does not specify minimum computer requirements in its encoder setup guidance. YouTube’s encoder guide |
| Cloud service | A hosted service sends uploaded, prerecorded video to YouTube. | StreamNeo is a YouTube-only option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so your computer can be off. StreamNeo |
Set up the YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Enable live streaming early. If this is your first YouTube live stream, activate the feature ahead of launch; YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
- Create or schedule the stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create a live stream or schedule one. Scheduled streams may appear to subscribers as upcoming, and YouTube lets you reuse stream details and keys. Manage live stream settings
- Copy the connection details. In the stream settings, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Reset it if it is compromised. Manage live stream settings
- Prepare the feed. Set the encoder to play the rain audio and provide the visual you want viewers to see, such as a still image or a video you have the rights to use. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not prescribe particular computer specifications or a specific encoder configuration for this ambience use.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. For a scheduled stream, wait until YouTube receives the encoder feed and shows its preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room. Confirm that both the sound and picture are present on the watch page. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
- Plan for interruptions. Power loss, internet outages, encoder restarts, or a YouTube interruption can stop a local feed. Keep a local recording if you need a backup; YouTube recommends recording a local archive, but that does not prevent interruptions. Check the stream after launch rather than assuming it will recover on its own.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
Use rain audio you have the rights to stream
Use your own recording or obtain permission that covers the way you plan to broadcast it. YouTube’s live-stream terms make the content provider responsible for holding the necessary rights worldwide, including applicable music rights. A label such as “royalty-free” is not, by itself, proof that a particular recording can be used in a continuous YouTube live stream. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can cause YouTube to replace the feed with a placeholder and issue a warning; if the matched content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. If you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. An archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim after it ends. Copyright issues with live streams
- For an original recording, retain the project files and recording details so you can show how it was made if questions arise.
- For licensed audio, get written permission that explicitly covers worldwide YouTube live streaming and any replay you intend to keep, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
- Do not use YouTube Creator Music tracks as a live-stream licensing workaround; Creator Music licensed and revenue-sharing tracks are not for livestreams. Share revenue using Creator Music
Plan for replay and DVR limits
YouTube warns that a live stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, so viewers may not be able to go back through a full day of rain sounds. Archive live streams · Turn on DVR on live streams

If a saved replay matters, keep a separate local recording. Ending and restarting the broadcast before it passes 12 hours is a practical way to create shorter sessions, but it is not a guarantee from YouTube that every segment will be archived. Tell viewers that the live player may not offer a full day of rewind, and publish shorter recordings separately if that playback access is important.
Understand monetization before building around it
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live-stream revenue routes, subject to channel access and eligibility. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Monetize your live stream

Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and may exclude repetitive or mass-produced material under its inauthentic-content policy; its reused-content policy is also distinct from copyright. A license for a rain recording does not establish that a channel will be approved for monetization. Make the production meaningfully original and do not assume a permission letter guarantees approval. The policy page was updated July 15, 2025. YouTube channel monetization policies
Troubleshoot common problems
- Live streaming is not available yet: First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before the planned start. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that the encoder has the correct server URL and stream key, that it is sending, and that the local device has power and internet access. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder. Manage live stream settings
- The scheduled stream has not started for viewers: Confirm the preview is arriving in Live Control Room, then select Go live for a scheduled encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
- The stream is replaced or interrupted: YouTube may have detected third-party content. Review the warning, confirm your rights, and if the recording is licensed, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. Copyright issues with live streams
- The replay is missing or viewers cannot rewind far: A stream over 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR may not span the full broadcast. Preserve a local recording and consider shorter sessions if replay access matters. Archive live streams · Turn on DVR on live streams
