You can stream a prerecorded MP4 from a Linux server to YouTube Live by sending an encoder feed to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. First check that the channel is eligible for live streaming and that the MP4’s codecs are compatible; then configure the encoder, test the preview and monitor stream health. The server’s location in India does not call for a special YouTube ingest URL, but its connection to the endpoint must be stable.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s current general requirements also set a minimum age of 16 for live streaming; its reviewed guidance does not describe a separate India-only encoder rule. If this is the channel’s first activation, YouTube says enabling live streaming can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance has the current eligibility details.
- A Linux server with the MP4 file, an encoder that can publish to YouTube over RTMPS, and stable outbound bandwidth greater than the stream’s selected bitrate.
- A live event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, where you can obtain the RTMPS URL and stream key.
An MP4 is a container, not a guarantee that its video and audio tracks are suitable for a live feed. Inspect the file’s actual codecs, resolution, frame rate and audio tracks before choosing encoder settings. YouTube’s published settings support H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS encoder streams. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the row that matches your output resolution and frame rate.
Set up the YouTube Live event and credentials
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, complete the channel verification and live-streaming activation steps. Allow up to 24 hours if this is the first activation.
- Create or schedule the event. Open the Live Control Room and create a stream or scheduled event. In its stream settings, copy the RTMPS URL and stream key supplied there. Use the exact endpoint YouTube displays; do not assume a fixed URL copied from another tutorial. For API-managed setups, use the ingestion endpoint and stream name supplied in the LiveStreams ingestion information. Google’s LiveStreams documentation describes that information.
- Keep the key private. Treat it as a credential. Do not put it in a public repository, exposed script, public log or screenshot. If it is disclosed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the server-side encoder configuration. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains key management.
Choose RTMPS and configure the encoder
For a conventional continuous encoder feed from a Linux server, RTMPS is the straightforward default. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which secures RTMP transport with TLS; its documented RTMPS connection uses port 443. Configure the encoder with the precise RTMPS URL and key from the Live Control Room. Do not guess an ingest hostname or substitute an endpoint from an unrelated guide. YouTube explains its streaming protocols.
- Video: H.264 is the standard starting point for an RTMPS encoder feed. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and to the quality you intend to deliver.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm the intended audio track is selected and audible in the preview.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends for encoder settings.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current guidance recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate and bitrate: YouTube’s listed settings support frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose bitrate from the current YouTube table for the selected resolution and frame rate, then confirm the server can sustain upload capacity above that bitrate. For example, YouTube’s table lists 10–14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 depending on the selected table parameters; consult the relevant row rather than treating that range as universal.
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a validated command line for a particular Linux distribution, FFmpeg build or MP4. The reviewed official pages do not verify a specific FFmpeg invocation. Confirm your encoder’s RTMPS support and its options for setting the codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution and audio before starting the event.

Test the feed and go live
- Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive the feed before the scheduled broadcast.
- In the Live Control Room, confirm that the preview appears and that the event reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Check both picture and sound. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio, rather than relying on a static or silent sample.
- Review stream-health messages and monitor audio and video during the broadcast. If the preview does not arrive, verify the URL, key, RTMPS/TLS connection and outbound connectivity before changing quality settings.
- Start the public event only when the preview and stream health are satisfactory.
YouTube’s encoder guidance and testing and troubleshooting advice are useful references when checking the incoming feed.
Does hosting the server in India change the setup?
The reviewed YouTube documentation does not establish a special Indian RTMPS endpoint or an India-specific encoder requirement. Use the URL and key shown for your event, regardless of where the Linux server is located. What matters operationally is whether that particular server can maintain a stable connection to the supplied endpoint at the selected bitrate. Check outbound connectivity and sustained upload capacity on the actual server; hosting-region choice, network routing and egress costs depend on the hosting provider and plan.

When to consider another YouTube ingest protocol
| Protocol | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Conventional continuous encoder output and ordinary or low-latency live use. | Requires the correct Live Control Room endpoint, TLS and port 443. YouTube recommends it for YouTube Live. |
| HLS | An encoder workflow that needs HLS-specific codec or HDR support. | Uses segment uploads over HTTPS and has segment format and duration requirements; latency is generally higher. |
| DASH | A specialized encoder that implements YouTube’s DASH delivery requirements. | Requires more involved segment and manifest handling, plus compliance with YouTube’s codec, container and timing constraints. |
YouTube documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS and DASH as third-party ingestion protocols. For an ordinary prerecorded MP4 feed, choose an alternative to RTMPS only when your encoder or the file’s codec, HDR or other requirements justify it. Review YouTube’s protocol-specific requirements before configuring HLS or DASH.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks for prerecorded video
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed to use the video, music and other material in the MP4. A file being prerecorded or streamed from your own server does not make its contents exempt from copyright rules. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming policies for the content you plan to broadcast; do not treat a successful preview as permission to use third-party material.
