You do not have to confront, warn, or debate a viewer before you act. If a viewer’s messages or behavior make you uncomfortable, remove the message, use a timeout or ban, ask a moderator to intervene, and report the conduct when it may violate Twitch rules. Twitch says you only need to tell the other user their behavior is unwanted if doing so feels safe and appropriate. The platform also provides AutoMod, blocked terms, chat verification, suspicious-user controls, Chat Filters, and Whisper privacy settings to reduce repeat contact.
This guide explains what to do during a live broadcast, how to configure safeguards before you stream, how to protect personal information, and when an online incident requires real-world help. Twitch’s Community Guidelines, Chat Tools documentation, and Viewer Controls documentation are the governing references; interface labels can change as Twitch updates its living policies and dashboard.

Your first priority is control, not conversation
When a viewer crosses a boundary, keep the stream focused on safety rather than on persuading that person to behave. A channel-level action can stop the immediate interaction and make clear that the conduct is not welcome. You can delete the message, apply a timeout, or ban the account yourself, or have a moderator do it. You are not required to provide a public explanation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTwitch’s Community Guidelines say a report can be valid without first telling the other user that the behavior is unwanted. The exact guidance is: “No, you may decide that some forms of harassment are severe enough to warrant reporting without first communicating to the other user that they are unwanted.” Treat that as permission to act early, especially when replying would expose you to more abuse or would put private information on screen.

A simple live-response sequence
- Stop the contact. Delete the message, timeout the account, or ban it. If you have moderators, use the quickest available command or ask them to take the action.
- Do not debate the decision. A short statement such as “That behavior is not allowed here” is optional; silence is also acceptable. Avoid reading the offending message aloud.
- Capture only what you need. If you intend to report, preserve the username, message, approximate time, and relevant context without rebroadcasting sensitive details.
- Report the conduct. Submit a Twitch report when the behavior may violate the Community Guidelines. Reporting is separate from a channel ban, so use both when appropriate.
- Re-establish a safe stream. Ask a moderator to watch chat, increase filtering, or pause chat while you regain composure. Ending the broadcast is a valid safety decision.
These actions work whether the conduct is a single sexual comment, repeated unwanted attention, threats, or an attempt to expose someone’s personal information. You do not need to wait for a pattern if the individual incident is severe enough to make you feel unsafe.
Prepare moderation before you go live
Safety controls are easier to use when they are configured before an incident. Twitch’s Chat Tools documentation describes several built-in layers. Configure the least disruptive combination that fits your audience, then tighten it if a problem develops.
Assign moderators you trust
A moderator can delete messages, issue timeouts or bans, and watch chat while you concentrate on the game. Choose people who understand your boundaries and know not to quote abusive text back into chat. Give them a private escalation rule: for example, remove sexualized comments immediately, stop arguments rather than trying to win them, and alert you privately when a report may be needed.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not make one moderator your only safety measure. They may be offline, miss a fast-moving exchange, or be the target of the same viewer. Keep your own controls available and agree on who can end the stream if a situation becomes overwhelming.
Use AutoMod as a review gate
AutoMod can hold potentially inappropriate chat messages for review instead of displaying them immediately. A moderator can then allow or reject a held message. This is useful when you want a human decision before questionable language reaches the broadcast, but it introduces a review step and can delay harmless messages. Explain the delay to regular viewers if it affects conversation.
Add blocked terms and phrases
Blocked terms can filter specific words or phrases. Include variations of slurs, sexual terms, personal nicknames used by harassers, and any phrase that has become part of a targeted campaign against you. Review the list periodically: a term that is harmless in one community can be abusive in yours, while an overbroad entry can hide legitimate discussion. Blocking a term is a preventive filter; it does not replace a report when a person is making threats or targeting you.

Turn on chat verification selectively or broadly
Twitch documents chat verification settings that can require additional account checks for everyone or for selected groups. Depending on the available controls, you can target first-time chatters or accounts below a chosen age. Verification adds friction for legitimate viewers, so decide whether the current risk justifies applying it to the whole channel or only to higher-risk groups. Record the setting you chose so moderators know what new chatters should expect.
Review suspicious-user controls
Twitch also provides suspicious-user controls in its channel moderation tools. The available options and labels may change, so open the current Chat Tools documentation and your dashboard before relying on a particular rule. Use these controls as an additional signal for moderation rather than as proof that an account is abusive; review context and act on conduct.
What each control does and when to use it
| Control | Scope | What happens to the message or contact | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Message deletion | One message in your channel | The visible message is removed | Quickly clearing a single violation | The account can post again unless you add another action |
| Timeout | One account in your channel for a limited period | The user cannot participate during the timeout | A proportionate pause for lower-level or first-time conduct | The person may return when it ends |
| Channel ban | One account in your channel | The account is prevented from participating in that channel | Persistent, severe, or clearly unwanted behavior | It does not by itself stop contact elsewhere on Twitch |
| AutoMod | Incoming chat in your channel | Potentially inappropriate messages are held for review | Putting a moderation decision between a message and your broadcast | Legitimate messages can be delayed or held |
| Blocked terms | Incoming chat in your channel | Messages containing selected words or phrases are filtered | Recurring slurs, sexual terms, or campaign-specific phrases | Misspellings and harmless uses may require list maintenance |
| Chat verification | Chatters in your channel, all or selected groups | Users must meet the verification requirement before chatting | Reducing throwaway or low-trust accounts | Extra friction for legitimate viewers |
| Chat Filters | Your viewer experience across Twitch chats | Selected categories of language are hidden from you | Reducing unwanted language when you are viewing other channels | It changes what you see, not what other viewers see |
| Block Whispers from Strangers | Private Whisper contact | Strangers cannot initiate Whisper conversations with you | Stopping unsolicited private messages | You may need another channel for legitimate new contacts |
The table separates channel moderation from viewer-side controls. A timeout or ban protects your channel; Chat Filters and the Whisper setting protect your own Twitch experience more broadly. None of these controls should be described as guaranteeing that harassment will stop everywhere on the service.
Reduce unwanted private contact
Chat is not the only route a viewer can use. Twitch’s Viewer Controls page documents Chat Filters and the setting called Block Whispers from Strangers. Twitch says the latter is enabled by default, and you can manage it in Security & Privacy Settings. Check the setting even if you believe it is active; account changes, interface updates, or a message from an existing contact can create confusion about who is allowed to reach you.
Use Chat Filters for your own viewing
Chat Filters hide selected kinds of language across Twitch chats for your account. They are useful when you are reading another channel, checking a community discussion, or moderating away from your own broadcast. They do not remove the content for everyone else and do not substitute for reporting a user who is targeting you.

When and how to report
Report conduct that may violate Twitch’s rules, including harassment and sexual harassment. Twitch describes sexual harassment as unwanted conduct that makes users feel uncomfortable, degraded, unsafe, or discouraged from participating. A report can establish that conduct is unwanted; a timeout, ban, or deleted message can do so at the channel level. You do not have to warn the viewer first.
Report promptly while context is available
- Note the account name exactly as shown, including unusual characters.
- Record the approximate time and what happened in plain language.
- Save relevant evidence privately if you can do so without displaying sensitive material on stream.
- Use Twitch’s reporting flow and describe the behavior, not a label you cannot substantiate.
- Keep your channel action in place while Twitch reviews the report.
A report should explain why the behavior was unwanted and identify repetition, escalation, or threats when those facts exist. Do not exaggerate, encourage viewers to contact the reported person, or publish their identity as retaliation.
Protect personal information and avoid amplifying a leak
Twitch prohibits revealing another person’s sensitive personal information, including a leaked address, and prohibits sharing material that violates someone else’s reasonable expectation of privacy. That rule matters even when you are responding to an attacker. Do not read an address, phone number, workplace, private image, or other exposed detail aloud. Do not zoom in on it, place it in an overlay, or paste it into chat to prove that you saw it.
If someone posts your information
- Remove the message and ban or timeout the account as appropriate.
- Tell moderators not to repeat the information while collecting evidence.
- Stop displaying alerts, browser windows, or chat panels that could reveal more data.
- Report the post to Twitch with the account and context.
- Review what your stream currently exposes: overlays, notification previews, social links, and visible desktop windows.
If the leak identifies another person, apply the same discipline. Protecting a friend, moderator, or family member does not permit you to rebroadcast their data.
Threats that may require immediate real-world help
Online moderation cannot handle every risk. Twitch advises contacting local law enforcement immediately if someone’s behavior makes you fear for your own safety or the safety of your immediate family. Use emergency services when there is an imminent danger, and do not wait for a platform decision before seeking help.
Preserve the minimum evidence that can help responders: usernames, timestamps, message text kept privately, relevant URLs, and any direct threat. Tell a trusted person what is happening, secure your physical location, and consider ending the stream. Do not announce your location, travel plans, home address, or the steps you are taking to authorities.

How to respond without making yourself the target
Many streamers worry that banning someone will look rude or cause an argument. A channel rule does not require a courtroom-style explanation. You can use a neutral line such as “Removed for violating channel rules,” or say nothing and let the moderation action speak. If you choose to communicate that behavior is unwanted, do it only when you feel safe and when the message will not expose additional personal information.
Do not promise an audience that you can identify a viewer, reveal their identity, or punish them outside Twitch. Do not ask viewers to mass-report, contact, or confront the person. Those reactions can escalate the incident and may expose more private data.

Once you are off camera, write a short incident record while details are fresh. Include the date, account names, actions taken, report reference if Twitch provides one, and any setting you changed. Keep the record private and restrict access to people who need it.
Run a settings review
- Confirm trusted moderators still have the permissions they need.
- Review AutoMod and blocked-term entries for the language used in the incident.
- Decide whether chat verification should apply to everyone or selected groups.
- Check suspicious-user controls and update rules that were too weak or too broad.
- Open Security & Privacy Settings and verify the Whisper restriction for strangers.
- Review Chat Filters if you are still seeing unwanted language while browsing Twitch.
Check the stream’s information surface
Harassment often becomes more damaging when a stream unintentionally supplies clues. Before the next broadcast, inspect overlays, browser sources, notification pop-ups, game lobbies, friend lists, and desktop capture. Remove unnecessary social links and avoid showing private conversations. This is a practical risk reduction step; it does not replace Twitch moderation or reporting.
What Twitch expects from streamers
Twitch recognizes that third parties may place abusive material in a broadcaster’s chat or external sources. Its Community Guidelines state: “We will not suspend broadcasters that we find to be acting in good-faith (including by using tools such as AutoMod, timeouts, and channel bans) to remove abuse appearing from third parties and external sources.” The same policy expects streamers to take steps to mitigate harassing material that appears on their stream.

In practice, that means acting in good faith: use the controls available to you, remove abusive material when you see it, avoid amplifying it, and report serious conduct. You are not expected to prevent every message before it appears, and a third party’s abuse does not require you to confront that person personally.

Scenario guide: choose the least risky effective action
A single insulting or sexual comment
Delete the message and use a timeout if you want a temporary boundary. If the wording is severe, targeted, or clearly unwanted, ban the account and report it. There is no need to invite an explanation on stream.
Repeated comments after a timeout
Ban the account, ask a moderator to watch for alternate accounts, and tighten AutoMod, blocked terms, or verification settings. Report the repeated behavior with the earlier action and timestamps.
A viewer tries to move the conversation into Whispers
Do not accept private contact merely to be polite. Keep Block Whispers from Strangers enabled in Security & Privacy Settings and use the reporting tools if the messages contain harassment or threats.
