What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To stream a portrait video in a landscape 16:9 YouTube Live frame, scale it down to fit a fixed 16:9 canvas, center it, and pad the unused sides. That preserves the entire clip; black bars are the simplest padding. A blurred background can fill the sides, but takes more filter setup. Cropping removes part of the picture, and stretching distorts it. Setting -aspect 16:9 alone does not turn portrait video into a landscape composition.
Choose how to fill the landscape canvas
The canvas and the source video have separate shapes: a portrait source can sit inside a landscape output without being cropped or distorted. Choose the framing based on what matters most for your video.
| Method | Original image preserved? | Side regions | Complexity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fit and pad | Yes | Black or another padding color | Lowest; recommended starting point |
| Fit over an enlarged, blurred copy | Yes, in the foreground | Filled with a blurred version of the clip | Higher; requires a filtergraph |
| Crop to fill | No | None; edges are removed | Moderate; framing must be chosen carefully |
| Stretch to fill | Yes, but distorted | None | Low, but changes the source’s proportions |
For gameplay, text, or other details close to the portrait frame’s edges, fit-and-pad is the safest choice. Use crop or stretch only when that change is intentional.

Choose an output canvas such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720. Apply a video filter that scales the source down, if needed, while preserving its aspect ratio, then centers it in the canvas:

-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,setsar=1"
Here, scale fits the image within 1920×1080 without changing its proportions. pad creates the full-size canvas and centers the fitted image, leaving matching margins on either side for a portrait source. setsar=1 sets a square sample aspect ratio. FFmpeg documents these filters and shows how padding can produce a 16:9 frame: FFmpeg filters documentation.
For 1280×720, replace each occurrence of 1920:1080 in the filter chain with 1280:720. Confirm filter options against the FFmpeg version installed on your system before using a command in production; this is a filter pattern, not a tested, end-to-end live-stream command.

Why -aspect 16:9 is not enough
The -aspect option sets display aspect information; it does not rearrange the video pixels into a new landscape frame. FFmpeg notes that, with stream copy, this affects container-level aspect information rather than any aspect ratio stored in encoded frames. To create a landscape composition from portrait footage, scale and place the image within a landscape canvas. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Set YouTube Live encoding options
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as streaming protocols and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codecs. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The recommendations below are from YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026; they are not measurements of your particular source, computer, or connection. Check YouTube’s current settings before streaming: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Use an output resolution and frame rate that suit the source and that your upload connection can sustain. For H.264, YouTube lists these examples:
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s published guidance, not a universal bitrate target. A connection that cannot sustain the selected upload bitrate can make a live stream unreliable. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality setting your connection can support. Its guidance also recommends CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.

Audio and color settings
- For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps as recommended advanced settings.
- For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
- For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. Its cited HDR guidance specifies H.265 and 10-bit; AV1 is not supported for HDR in that guidance.
Choose the settings that match the material you are actually streaming. These advanced values are useful when configuring the encoder; they do not replace a pre-stream check of sound and picture.

The filter chain above covers framing, not the complete setup for a live broadcast or a repeating playlist. The exact looping command depends on the video and audio inputs and how you want files or transitions handled; do not treat the filter example as a complete, verified loop command. Use your own YouTube stream key through your encoder’s configuration, and never publish or share it.

- Set up the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain its stream key. Keep the key private.
- Configure FFmpeg’s output. Use the landscape filter chain, choose an output profile that matches your source and connection, and configure the live protocol, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings for YouTube’s current guidance. Looping and playlist transitions require input-specific configuration beyond the framing filter shown here.
- Inspect the generated video. Check that the output is the intended landscape size, has square sample aspect ratio, and shows the complete portrait frame centered rather than cropped.
- Preview representative motion and sound. Check the footage and audio you plan to broadcast, including any transitions relevant to your setup.
- Run a private or scheduled test before the event. Confirm the stream reaches YouTube, then monitor stream health. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises testing with audio and motion similar to the planned stream.
Troubleshoot common framing and stream problems
- The YouTube output still looks portrait or square: Confirm that the output uses the landscape canvas dimensions and the scale-and-pad video filter. Display-aspect metadata alone does not create the landscape composition.
- The portrait image is cut off: Check that the scale filter uses
force_original_aspect_ratio=decreaseand that the pad filter uses the chosen canvas dimensions. A crop-to-fill approach deliberately removes source content. - The image looks unnaturally wide or narrow: Avoid stretching the portrait source to the landscape dimensions. Fit it proportionally and pad the remaining area.
- The stream is unstable: Compare the selected bitrate with what your upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and test before the live event.
- The picture or audio does not match expectations: Preview the actual output and check the source, selected output settings, and audio configuration before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than a hands-on FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
