Use a DJ playback app such as Mixxx to crossfade the music before it reaches your streaming encoder. Mixxx Auto DJ queues the next track and fades between tracks; your encoder sends that mixed program to YouTube, which hosts the live broadcast but does not create the song transitions.
What you need—and where the fade happens
The audio path is: authorized music files → Mixxx Auto DJ → streaming encoder → YouTube Live. Auto DJ handles track order and crossfading. The encoder captures and transmits the resulting audio and video; YouTube carries the broadcast and may scan it for rights matches. YouTube’s Live API treats the broadcast and its audio-video stream as distinct resources, and its continuous-broadcast behavior does not mix tracks for you (YouTube Live API).
This method uses music files available to Mixxx on the computer running the playback and encoder setup. Put only recordings you are authorized to stream in the queue. A technical crossfade is not permission to use a recording.

Prepare an authorized playlist
Add music you have the rights to stream to Mixxx’s library or prepare a playlist. Check whether your license covers live streaming on YouTube and whether the rights holder requires your channel to be allowlisted in Content ID.

Fill the Auto DJ queue and enable it
Mixxx’s Auto DJ playlist starts empty. Add tracks or a playlist to the queue, then enable Auto DJ. It loads an upcoming track near the end of the current one and crossfades between them. See the Mixxx 2.5 manual for the Auto DJ controls and transition settings.

Choose a transition mode
Use cue-based transitions when tracks have useful intro and outro markers. Full Intro + Outro retains both marked sections more fully. Fade At Outro Start can shorten the outgoing track: when its outro is longer than the incoming intro, the fade can cut off the outro’s tail, and a short incoming intro may make the result sound abrupt.

For a chosen overlap duration, use Full Track or Skip Silence and specify the number of seconds. Skip Silence detects silence when the signal first rises above or falls below -60 dBFS, as defined in Mixxx’s manual. These modes provide more consistent timing, but listen for gaps, clipped endings, or an overly dense overlap.

Listen and adjust
Preview the transitions with your actual tracks. There is no universally best fade length for lofi: percussion, sustained ambience, reverb tails, and silence at the ends all affect what sounds natural. Mixxx says Auto DJ does not account for track volume, frequency content, or rhythm, so it cannot guarantee a balanced, human-style mix. Adjust cue markers or timing where needed.

DJ headphones connected to Mixxx’s headphone output can help you preview the incoming track, but they are optional; Auto DJ can crossfade without them.

Send the mixed program to YouTube
Set your encoder to capture Mixxx’s mixed audio output along with the video or visualizer you want to broadcast. Check that the encoder is not also capturing a separate music player, which could layer a second copy of the audio over the mix. YouTube recommends RTMPS and publishes current audio and video encoder guidance at its live encoder settings page. Check the Live Dashboard for incoming-stream errors using YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance; encoder requirements may change.

Choose between cue-based and fixed-duration fades

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, a stream can be interrupted or terminated. Licensed music may still require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm both the streaming rights and any allowlisting requirement with the relevant rights holder before going live; a smooth transition does not prevent a rights match (YouTube copyright guidance).

- Auto DJ does not move to the next song: Make sure the Auto DJ queue contains tracks and Auto DJ is enabled.
- There is a gap or abrupt cut: Listen to the track endings and cue positions. A short incoming intro can make Fade At Outro Start abrupt; try another mode or adjust the cues.
- The overlap sounds muddy or unbalanced: Change the fade timing or track pairing and listen again. Auto DJ does not analyze loudness, frequency balance, or rhythm.
- The stream has doubled or distorted music: Check the encoder’s audio capture and disable any unintended second music source.
- YouTube interrupts the live stream: Check the Live Dashboard for stream errors, then review YouTube’s copyright guidance and verify your rights and any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder.
