To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a Mac, use OBS Studio: add the video as a Media Source, enable Loop, connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with its stream URL and stream key, then check the Live Control Room preview before going live. The Mac, OBS, video file and internet connection must stay available for the local stream to continue.
Check YouTube channel eligibility first
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If you have never enabled live streaming, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours, so set it up well before your planned broadcast. Loop a video in OBS on your Mac
Add one video as a looping source
- Install OBS Studio from the OBS Project and open it.
- Create or select a scene. In the Sources panel, choose + and add a Media Source.
- Give the source a name, select the local video file, and enable Loop. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM; playback can still depend on the file’s codecs and the system.
- Check the OBS preview and audio. Confirm that the image fits the scene and that sound is present at an appropriate level.
When playback reaches the end, the Media Source starts the file again. This repeats the media inside OBS; it does not make the stream independent of the Mac.
Loop a playlist
For multiple videos, add a VLC Video source, choose the playlist files and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this OBS source. Check the order and transitions in the preview before connecting the broadcast.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe how these values connect the encoder to the channel.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly. If someone else obtains it, reset it in the Live Control Room.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming video to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, check stream health, then use YouTube’s control to go live.
Starting OBS sends the encoder feed; the YouTube control-room step is what lets you inspect that feed before it is public. YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP-based ingestion.
Choose settings and test the upload path
There is no single bitrate that suits every Mac, resolution and frame rate. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for your chosen output resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Set the encoder to a supported frame size and rate, and ensure the Mac’s sustained upload speed has headroom over the selected stream bitrate.

- Test with representative motion and audio, not only a static opening frame.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before going public.
- Keep OBS visible or otherwise monitored during the run; a local source can stop if the application, computer, file access or connection fails.
- Use YouTube’s recommendations as a starting point, then confirm the actual feed remains stable at the settings you intend to use.
Exact OBS and YouTube interface labels can change. Settings that work depend on the Mac, source file and available network upload capacity; no particular macOS version or device-specific performance is established here.
Plan for archives and very long broadcasts
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for broadcasts longer than 12 hours. If keeping a copy matters, record locally and check that the Mac has enough free storage. YouTube recommends a local archive backup in its live-stream archive guidance. An external SSD for video recording is one optional place to store a local recording, not a requirement for going live.

Choose OBS when local control and a Mac-based workflow are important. A cloud service is an alternative when you do not want a dedicated computer at home to keep the broadcast running; YouTube’s listing of a service is not an endorsement or performance guarantee.
