The language does not require a special protocol. Your channel must be eligible, your VPS must sustain the upload, and you must have rights to all material in the video.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, according to YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
- A Linux VPS with enough CPU capacity if you plan to transcode, and sustained outbound bandwidth for the selected stream bitrate.
- An installed FFmpeg build with the required input and output support. Check its capabilities with
ffmpeg -version. - A video file you have the necessary rights to stream, including rights to its soundtrack, performances and embedded third-party material.
An India VPS is a hosting choice, not a guarantee of better delivery to viewers in India. Validate the server’s sustained upload route to YouTube rather than relying on an advertised port speed.
Configure the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream and configure its visibility, title and scheduling as needed.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube describes the key as the information that tells your encoder where to send the feed and enables YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a command, repository, screenshot or shared log. If exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance when choosing the ingest protocol and settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 video ingest; the command below uses H.264 over an RTMPS-compatible FLV output.
Inspect the video and choose copy or transcode
Inspect the file before building the command. FFmpeg’s ffprobe can show the codecs, dimensions, frame rate and audio streams:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i "input-video.mp4"If the source video and audio codecs are accepted by YouTube and can be carried in the chosen output container, stream-copying avoids another encode. If they are incompatible, or you need a different resolution or frame rate, transcode instead. Do not assume every file can be copied directly; muxing compatibility matters.

For a first test, H.264 at 1080p30 is a practical reference point if the source and VPS can support it. YouTube’s current encoder table recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and lists 14 Mbps as the maximum; at 720p30 it recommends 3 Mbps and lists 8 Mbps as the maximum. These are YouTube-published settings, not independent performance measurements. See YouTube’s encoder settings for current recommendations.
Send a prerecorded file with FFmpeg
Replace the input filename and ingest URL/key placeholders locally. Never put a real stream key into a public example or shared shell history. This template transcodes the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream:

-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"-re paces file input in real time, so FFmpeg sends it at approximately playback speed rather than as fast as it can read the disk. -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream; -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if one exists. The video options encode H.264, use a 5 Mbps target, and set a two-second GOP only when the output is 30 fps. The audio options encode AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and 128 Kbps stereo audio for RTMP/RTMPS in its current encoder guidance.
The template assumes 30 fps. Set the GOP length to match the actual output frame rate: at 30 fps, -g 60 is 60 frames, or two seconds; at another frame rate, adjust it accordingly. The example’s fixed bitrate and buffer values may not suit every source, output mode or VPS. Confirm the actual stream settings in the Live Control Room and adjust them to YouTube’s current table. FFmpeg’s documentation covers real-time input pacing and its protocol documentation covers RTMP-family protocols. The exact command can also depend on the FFmpeg build and the ingest URL supplied by YouTube.

Network and CPU headroom
YouTube recommends about 20% network headroom over the stream bitrate. For a 5 Mbps video stream, that means planning for at least 6 Mbps of sustained upload capacity, with extra room for audio and network variation. This is a planning calculation based on YouTube’s headroom guidance, not a VPS performance guarantee. Monitor CPU use during transcoding; if the VPS cannot encode in real time, reduce the output workload or use compatible stream-copying.
Preview, start and monitor
- Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Run the command and wait for the Live Control Room preview.
- Check that the video has the expected aspect ratio and motion, and that audio is present, clear and synchronized.
- Review the stream-health status and any warnings in the Live Control Room before promoting or sharing the event.
- Keep the FFmpeg process and VPS running for the full stream. Watch FFmpeg output, CPU use and network health; YouTube recommends setting up in advance, previewing and monitoring the stream.
A VPS plan’s advertised network speed does not establish that it can sustain the required upload to YouTube’s ingest edge. Test under realistic conditions and compare VPS location, egress limits and charges, sustained network capacity, CPU allocation, and restart or recovery options. The cited platform guidance does not establish that a particular Indian provider or data-center region is best.

Rights and YouTube policy
Regional-language content is subject to the same rights requirements as other streams. YouTube’s live-stream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world.” Read the YouTube live-stream terms and confirm rights for the picture, soundtrack, performances and any third-party material included in the recording.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause the stream to be replaced with a placeholder, interrupted or terminated. A license alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption: the rights owner may also need to allowlist your channel. Check the YouTube copyright guidance for live streams and resolve permissions before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting common FFmpeg-to-YouTube problems
