The VPS handles playback and encoding; your home computer can be off. The setup still needs server administration, a stable outbound connection, and content you have the right to stream. YouTube’s technical guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime, complete archiving of broadcasts lasting 12 hours or more, or monetization approval for a particular video.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch.
- A VPS that can store the media and run FFmpeg, with enough outbound network capacity for the stream and other server traffic. Leave headroom above the outgoing bitrate; the exact capacity needed depends on your configuration and server workload.
- Video and audio files you are authorized to broadcast, plus the current stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.
- A plan for monitoring the encoder process, the VPS connection, storage, and the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. FFmpeg can read a media file in real time and send it over RTMP; that is the basic mechanism, not a complete production configuration for every YouTube stream.
Set up the VPS-to-YouTube stream

Enable live streaming on YouTube
Open YouTube Studio and enable live streaming for the channel. If this is the first time the channel will go live, allow up to 24 hours for activation before scheduling the broadcast.

Create or schedule the broadcast and retrieve credentials
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy the current server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Use the values displayed for your channel rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in shared logs or shell history.

Install FFmpeg and place the media on the VPS
Install an FFmpeg package appropriate for your VPS operating system and confirm that the build supports the codecs and protocol you intend to use. Upload the video files to the server and check that the FFmpeg process can read them. Package capabilities vary, so do not assume every build supports every RTMPS setup.

Choose settings that match the media and YouTube’s current guidance
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264, its published recommended bitrates include:

Output format YouTube recommended bitrate 1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 720p at 30 or 60 fps 8 Mbps These are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, not a measured minimum VPS connection speed. Match the output to your source, FFmpeg build, and current YouTube settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP; use it when supported by your encoder setup.

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream-rereads the input at its native rate rather than sending the file as fast as the encoder can consume it. Replace the example input and destination with your media path and the current YouTube ingest URL plus stream key. The example demonstrates the mechanics only; it does not select codecs, output bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, or a YouTube-specific RTMPS endpoint. Build those settings for your actual output and FFmpeg package, and avoid exposing the key in command history or logs.YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires an

Verify the preview and supervise the process
Once FFmpeg is running, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast. On the VPS, monitor whether FFmpeg remains active, whether the outbound connection is stable, and whether the media and logs are consuming expected disk space. A process supervisor and a restart plan can help recover from a local process failure, but neither that setup nor YouTube’s encoder guidance guarantees uninterrupted service or automatic recovery from every failure.
Looping a video or playlist
The generic FFmpeg example above plays an input file; it does not itself configure an endless playlist. For one-file repetition, FFmpeg offers input-looping options, but exact looping behavior depends on the file, FFmpeg build, and chosen encoding and output settings. For a playlist, prepare an ordered list of media and configure the playback process to advance and repeat it. Test transitions, audio continuity, and restart behavior before leaving it unattended. Keep the stream key private when building scripts or service configuration.

Do not assume a loop is continuous simply because FFmpeg started once: inspect the process and stream preview over the duration you intend to run, and decide how the VPS should behave after a process exit, reboot, or network interruption.
Plan around YouTube archives and content rules
Archiving is not the same as stream uptime
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish that a longer continuous broadcast will have a complete archive, nor does that statement set a continuous-stream maximum. If preserving the full broadcast matters, consider shorter scheduled segments and verify the resulting archive behavior on your channel.
Rights, reused content, and monetization
Technical ability to send a file to YouTube does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. Make sure you hold the relevant rights for the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s current content and channel policies for your situation. The encoder setup guidance says monetization is available if a channel is in the YouTube Partner Program; it does not establish that a particular prerecorded or looping stream qualifies for monetization.
Common problems and fixes

A VPS with FFmpeg suits operators who want server-side control and are comfortable configuring and monitoring an encoder.
