For a scheduled broadcast, starting the encoder does not necessarily make the event public: click Go live in YouTube when the preview is ready.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16 for streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility rules.
- Install Wirecast and have the video file you want to play available on the computer. Wirecast is the production and encoding layer; YouTube Live receives the feed and hosts the watch page.
- Check your upload bandwidth and test using representative video motion and audio. YouTube’s recommendations are to test the connection and monitor stream health, not to assume a connection that works for ordinary browsing can sustain a broadcast.
Set up the YouTube broadcast
Create or schedule a stream
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling creates a watch page that you can share in advance and allows viewers to set reminders. YouTube’s setup guidance recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand; these are preparation recommendations, not mandatory waiting periods.
Copy the ingest address and stream key
In Live Control Room, open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key into Wirecast’s YouTube destination settings. Use RTMPS when available: it is YouTube’s encrypted version of RTMP. You can reveal the RTMPS address using the lock icon under Stream settings. Treat the key like a password that authorizes a feed; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube rather than continuing to use it.
Wirecast may offer a YouTube preset. If it does, use that or enter the URL and key directly. The available controls and labels vary by Wirecast version, so use the settings for your installed release rather than relying on a universal menu path.

Cue the prerecorded video in Wirecast
Add or select the video clip as a source in your Wirecast production, then cue it so it is the program feed you intend to send. Telestream describes Wirecast as supporting prerecorded clips in a live production, but the exact menus, accepted formats, end-of-clip behavior, and repeat or looping controls are version-dependent and are not established in the current general documentation. Confirm those controls in the guide for your installed Wirecast version.
Before connecting to YouTube, play the clip locally through the production and confirm the picture and audio you expect are present. If the video ends before you stop the broadcast, do not assume Wirecast will repeat it automatically; verify the behavior in your version and plan an appropriate transition or stop time.

Choose output settings and test
Set Wirecast’s output to a resolution and frame rate your connection can reliably sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings table provides bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate; there is no single correct bitrate for every stream. Follow the value for your chosen output rather than selecting a bitrate solely because the source file has a high resolution.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Video codec: For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as options. Confirm your Wirecast version and output hardware support the codec you select.
- Audio and motion: Test with the actual clip, including its loudest audio and busiest visual sections, and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room.
YouTube automatically transcodes live video into playback formats. Choose a reliable encoder output for your connection rather than trying to send the largest possible file settings. HLS is an alternative ingest method for particular technical needs, including HDR or codecs unavailable over RTMP, but YouTube notes its latency is higher; an ordinary prerecorded-video broadcast generally uses RTMPS unless a specific requirement calls for HLS.

Start the stream and end it cleanly
- Start sending the feed from Wirecast.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming video preview and check picture, audio, and stream health.
- If the event is scheduled, click Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready for viewers to see it. Starting Wirecast alone may only send the feed to the event preview.
- When finished, click End Stream in Live Control Room, then stop sending from Wirecast.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its stated automatic-archive rule does not cover streams longer than 12 hours, so do not rely on that rule for a longer broadcast.
Copyright, reused content, and audience expectations
Streaming a file instead of a camera feed does not change your responsibility for the material. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to broadcast, and review YouTube’s policies before using third-party music, game footage, or other creators’ work. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted when rights are disputed. For monetization, a technically valid broadcast does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies; consider whether the content adds original value and complies with applicable reused-content rules.

Tell viewers when the program is prerecorded if that matters to the experience, and make sure the scheduled title, description, and thumbnail accurately describe what will play. Avoid presenting a loop as a real-time event or implying that a live camera or host is present when the broadcast is only a video file.
