Run a rehearsal in YouTube Live Control Room using the actual lofi music, audio routing and visual loop you plan to broadcast. Set the test to unlisted if invited viewers need to check the watch page, inspect stream health, listen and watch from a separate device, test any backup encoder, and clear music rights before the public launch. A successful test checks the setup; it does not grant permission to use the music.
Choose the right visibility for your test
Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and choose visibility deliberately. YouTube supports public, private and unlisted streams. Unlisted is a practical choice when collaborators need to open the watch page without making the test publicly discoverable; private may suit a limited owner-side check. In either case, confirm that the intended tester can access the event from their account and device. Visibility is not a substitute for music clearance. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend trying a test stream, and its live-stream settings guidance covers visibility options.
Set up the rehearsal in advance
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, and select the test visibility. Use the event’s stream URL and stream key in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: it directs the encoder to your stream and should not be shared publicly. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to connect.
- Allow setup time: YouTube’s live-stream tips advise setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. For a rehearsal, leave enough time to fix errors and repeat the test.
- Wait for the preview: Start the encoder and check that Live Control Room receives a picture and audio before you start the event. Resolve any displayed status or error message rather than relying only on the encoder’s local preview.
Test the actual lofi signal
Send the same music source, playback routing, transitions, graphics and visual loop planned for the public stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the intended broadcast. Listen to the received stream, not just the audio playing locally.
- Listen at the beginning, through a music transition and across a longer uninterrupted section.
- Check loop points for abrupt cuts, accidental silence or jumps in volume.
- Watch for distortion, hum or noise, frozen visuals, unexpected scene changes and audio/video synchronization problems.
- Confirm that the stream does not stop or change when the computer’s display goes to sleep or another routine activity occurs, if that is part of your planned setup.
The specific symptoms above are practical checks for a representative rehearsal, not a list of separate YouTube requirements. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Read the live-stream tips.

Check what viewers can actually see and hear
- Open the event’s watch page or channel page as a viewer, preferably from a separate device or account.
- Check that the intended tester can reach the page, the video starts, the audio is audible and the stream remains available.
- Repeat playback on a phone or another mobile device. YouTube specifically recommends checking access through channel and watch pages and on mobile.
- Confirm the title and visuals shown to viewers are correct, and listen for problems that may not be apparent in the encoder preview.
A local preview only confirms what the encoder is producing; viewer playback also checks delivery and access. YouTube’s tips cover preview, viewer access and mobile checks.
Review stream health, bitrate and backup recovery
Keep Live Control Room open during the rehearsal. Check stream status and any specific error messages, then confirm that playback on the watch page remains stable. YouTube also provides real-time analytics during a live event. For network planning, measure upload capacity rather than assuming it matches download speed.

Choose settings for your format
There is no single bitrate that fits every lofi stream: YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. As one reference point, YouTube lists H.264 1080p at 30 fps at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s published encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular connection will sustain the stream. Check the current table for your chosen settings in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Rate control: Use CBR (constant bitrate), as listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps.
These are platform recommendations; choose resolution and frame rate based on the visual material and the capacity of your connection. For an audio-focused radio stream, avoid increasing video settings without a reason to do so.

Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends 20% more upload bandwidth than the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. For example, calculate headroom from both streams if they transmit simultaneously; do not size the connection for the primary alone. The figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measurement of your network. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Test failover rather than assuming it works
If you configured a backup encoder, test it during rehearsal. Stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet connection, then watch the viewer player to confirm that it changes to the backup. Restore the primary path and confirm normal playback again. A backup configuration is only useful if the viewer can actually receive it when the primary fails. YouTube describes this failover test in its streaming tips.

Clear music rights separately from the technical test
A clean rehearsal does not establish that you may broadcast the music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. A live-stream archive can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends.
If you have licensed music, check that the license covers YouTube live use and any recording or archive you plan to keep. Ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. A license receipt alone may not confirm that the allowlisting is complete. YouTube explains live-streaming and Content ID here.

End the test and review the result
- End the stream in YouTube, then stop the encoder after the event has stopped.
- If you recorded locally, check that the file is intact and that it grew during the rehearsal.
- Review the finished playback for glitches that were easy to miss live.
- Check post-stream analytics. YouTube says live-stream metrics generally appear in Analytics within minutes after the stream ends; some vertical-stream metrics may take 24 hours.
YouTube states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving as your only copy if you need a local recording. See YouTube’s encoder instructions and live-stream tips.
Troubleshoot common rehearsal problems
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Check that the encoder is running and using the event’s stream URL and current stream key. Read the status or error shown in Live Control Room. | Correct the encoder destination or key, restart the encoder and wait for the preview before starting the event. |
| Testers cannot open the watch page | Confirm the event’s visibility and test the link while signed in as the intended viewer. | For invited testers, use unlisted visibility and verify access again on their device. Private access may be limited to invited accounts. |
| Audio is silent, distorted or uneven | Listen to the viewer playback, check the encoder’s audio input and routing, and review transitions and playback levels. | Correct the source or levels, then repeat the relevant parts of the rehearsal, including a transition and loop point. |
| Video freezes or playback buffers | Check Live Control Room status, the selected bitrate and resolution, and actual upload capacity. Include any backup bitrate when calculating headroom. | Use the bitrate guidance for the chosen codec and video settings; reduce the stream demand if the available upload connection cannot sustain it. |
| Backup does not take over | Check that the backup is configured and transmitting, then observe the viewer player during a deliberate primary-path failure. | Correct the backup setup and repeat the failover rehearsal until viewer playback confirms the change. |
| A licensed track triggers an interruption or claim | Check the license scope and whether the rights holder has allowlisted the channel in Content ID. | Contact the rights holder to resolve allowlisting or use music cleared for the intended live and archived use. A successful technical test cannot clear a rights issue. |
