Yes—you can use a Raspberry Pi 4 to send a prerecorded video file to YouTube as a live stream. The Pi must play the file in real time and an encoder must send it to the event’s YouTube ingest URL using the event’s stream key. Create the event in YouTube Studio, configure and test your encoder, check the preview, then start the event in Live Control Room. Raspberry Pi and YouTube publish relevant hardware and streaming specifications, but no Raspberry Pi-specific encoder command or build is established here; treat the configuration below as guidance to adapt and validate on your own Pi.

Before you start: check YouTube eligibility and prepare the Pi

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its general eligibility information also gives a minimum age of 16. Check current requirements on YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page. You will also need a Raspberry Pi 4 with Raspberry Pi OS or another compatible system, the video file on microSD or connected storage, a network connection, and an encoder that can play the file in real time and send it to YouTube.

The Pi 4 has built-in Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi, plus a microSD slot, so a separate capture device or network adapter is not inherently needed for a local video file. If a wired router connection is available, Ethernet is a straightforward setup choice; no stability advantage over Wi-Fi is claimed here.

1. Create or schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live to enter Live Control Room, then create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder setup workflow describes the connection and preview sequence.
  2. Set the event title, schedule, and privacy. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted settings; choose the one appropriate for your audience.
  3. Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. Use the values for the correct event. Keep the key private: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings.

2. Check whether the video is suitable for the Pi

Pi 4 specifications list H.264 hardware encoding up to 1080p30, H.264 decoding up to 1080p60, and H.265 decoding up to 4Kp60. These are hardware capabilities, not a guarantee that every file, operating-system image, or encoder combination will work smoothly in a live workload. Raspberry Pi documentation also notes that Pi 4 hardware MPEG-2 and VC-1 decoding is disabled; files using those codecs may need software decoding.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Before scheduling a long broadcast, play the entire source file on the Pi with the same software you intend to stream from. Look for dropped frames, stuttering, audio sync problems, or overheating. If playback is not smooth, consider converting the file on another computer to a format your installed software handles reliably, then test the converted file on the Pi. This is a cautious compatibility step, not a measured Pi performance result.

3. Configure the encoder for YouTube

Choose an encoder available for your Pi’s operating system that can read the file at normal speed and send a live feed to YouTube over RTMP or preferably RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. See its current recommended encoder settings and use the controls actually offered by your encoder. No specific Pi installation steps or command are given because no Pi-specific software build or command has been verified.

Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

For a Pi 4, H.264 at 720p30 or 1080p30 is a defensible starting point: 1080p30 matches the board’s listed H.264 encode capability, while 720p30 may be preferable if the source, software, temperature, or upload connection makes the higher setting unreliable. Choose a resolution and frame rate that the source and encoder can sustain; hardware capability alone does not prove your full pipeline can.

H.264 output YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements of Pi 4 performance. Select the exact row for your output resolution and frame rate, and check that your available upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate with room for network variation. If it cannot, lower the output setting and test again.

Stream URL and key

In the encoder, enter the ingest URL and stream key copied from the event’s Live Control Room settings. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in public screenshots, posts, or scripts shared with others. Reset it from YouTube Studio if someone else obtains it.

4. Preview, go live, and end the broadcast

  1. Start the encoder on the Pi and wait for YouTube to show an incoming preview in Live Control Room.
  2. Check that moving video and audio are both present and in sync. Test representative motion and the loudest or quietest relevant audio before starting the event.
  3. When the preview is correct, start the event from Live Control Room. Keep an eye on stream health and audio/video quality while it runs; YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover operational checks.
  4. When finished, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder on the Pi. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

Copyright and prerecorded-content considerations

A live broadcast does not make copyrighted footage, music, or other material permissible to use. Only stream material you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s rules and any applicable rights-holder terms before going live. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and policy information is a starting point for account and platform requirements. Keep the video meaningfully useful to viewers; streaming a file rather than a camera feed does not itself guarantee that YouTube will treat the channel or content favorably under its policies.

Troubleshooting

  • YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm the encoder is running and that the URL and key belong to the event currently open in Live Control Room. Re-copy the credentials if necessary, and verify the Pi has network access.
  • The stream connects but video stutters: Test the source file locally for smooth playback, check whether its codec relies on software decoding, and reduce resolution or frame rate. Verify sustained upload capacity against YouTube’s recommendation for the selected output.
  • Audio is missing or out of sync: Check the source’s audio track and encoder audio selection, then test a representative section before going live. YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs in its encoder recommendations.
  • The stream drops: Check the Pi’s network connection and stream health in Live Control Room. Restart the encoder and confirm that the event still uses the active stream key; reset the key if it may have been compromised.
  • The file will not play smoothly: Check the container and codecs against the installed player and encoder. Pi 4’s MPEG-2 and VC-1 hardware decoding is disabled, so those sources may be particularly demanding; test a converted copy if needed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving the Pi running, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. For Indian users, UPI is supported. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
