You can run a continuous Punjabi kirtan stream by looping prepared audio-and-video files through FFmpeg and sending the output to a YouTube Live ingest endpoint. Set the encoder to YouTube’s current recommendations, test the complete setup on the actual host and internet connection, and arrange monitoring and recovery: FFmpeg alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. Before you start, confirm you have permission for every recording and performance you plan to stream.

What you need before going live

  • A YouTube channel that can create a live stream. Check the channel’s current access and any restrictions in YouTube Studio; eligibility can depend on the channel, and the sources cited here do not establish your channel’s status.
  • A computer or server that can stay on, run FFmpeg, read the media files, and maintain a reliable upload connection.
  • Prepared video files containing both the kirtan audio and a visual track. If you only have audio, create a video version first, such as a still image with the audio, and make sure you have permission to use the image as well.
  • Permission for the exact material being broadcast. A devotional subject or a traditional text does not by itself establish that a particular arrangement, performance, or sound recording is cleared.
  • An FFmpeg build that includes the encoders you plan to use. FFmpeg’s documentation is broad and version-dependent, so check your installed build and test your command before relying on it.

Choose the YouTube ingest protocol and quality

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or select the stream, and use the server URL, protocol, and stream key YouTube shows for that stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, H.264 video with AAC audio is a practical starting point. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into viewer output formats; your upload bitrate is an ingest setting, not a promise that every viewer receives that exact format.

Example H.264 output YouTube recommended video bitrate When it may fit
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps A lower-bandwidth starting point if the stream remains healthy on your uplink.
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps A higher-detail option only if your connection can sustain it reliably.

These figures are YouTube’s recommendations on its settings page accessed in 2026, not measurements of your connection and not universal bitrates for other codecs or frame rates. Use YouTube’s current settings table for the exact combination you choose. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. YouTube also recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a quality your upload can sustain with headroom, then verify it with a representative test and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When to consider HLS instead

HLS is a separate ingestion option, not a setting to mix casually with an RTMP/RTMPS command. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Its requirements include HTTPS POST/PUT, transport-stream (TS) segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of one to four seconds. Consider it when its supported codecs or HDR workflow are needed and your encoder supports the required configuration; otherwise, standard RTMPS is the simpler starting point.

Prepare a loopable playlist

For the least complicated FFmpeg loop, assemble the kirtan recordings into compatible video files before streaming. Keep a consistent frame size, frame rate, and audio layout where practical, and check that there is no unintended silence or black gap between files. If you combine separate audio and visual sources, render them into video files or build and test a separate FFmpeg filter workflow; the command below expects each playlist entry to contain the audio and video you want broadcast.

Create a UTF-8 text file named playlist.txt in the working directory. List one media file per line in concat-demuxer format, for example:

file 'kirtan-01.mp4'
file 'kirtan-02.mp4'
file 'kirtan-03.mp4'

Use paths that are valid from the directory where FFmpeg will run. The concat demuxer works best when the files have compatible streams and parameters. Test the playlist locally before connecting to YouTube; if FFmpeg reports mismatched streams or timestamps, normalize the files into a consistent format or use a different, tested playlist workflow.

Send the playlist to YouTube with FFmpeg

  1. Install and verify FFmpeg. Run ffmpeg -version and confirm the build includes libx264 if you use the H.264 example below. The available encoders vary by build.
  2. Read the ingest details from YouTube Studio. Copy the current RTMPS server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. Do not publish either value in a public script, terminal screenshot, or shared log.
  3. Set the connection values privately. In a shell session on the streaming host, set RTMPS_URL to the server URL and STREAM_KEY to the key YouTube displays. Avoid saving the key in a world-readable file or exposing it in a public process listing.
  4. Start with a test, then run the encoder. This illustrative H.264/AAC command loops the playlist and sends a 720p, 30 fps signal at YouTube’s 3 Mbps H.264 recommendation for that format. Change the scaling, frame rate, and bitrate together if you choose another supported output, and verify the final settings against YouTube’s current guidance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=30"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3000k -minrate 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "${RTMPS_URL}/${STREAM_KEY}"

This is a starting example, not a tested universal 24/7 recipe. At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame, two-second GOP; check the resulting signal and YouTube’s current keyframe guidance. The command assumes your playlist files contain usable audio and video streams and that your FFmpeg build can encode them as shown. If the video is already 720p, the scale-and-pad filter preserves its aspect ratio and adds padding as needed. If the input has no audio or no video, this example will not create the missing stream for you.

The -re option reads the input at its natural playback rate, while -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the concat input. Neither option makes the process immune to file errors, host restarts, or network outages. Keep the stream key out of command history where possible; shell history and process inspection can expose command-line secrets, so use a protected configuration or credential-injection method appropriate to your operating system and hosting environment.

Test the full setup before leaving it unattended

  1. Preview a short run. Confirm the playlist plays in order, audio is audible, the image is correct, and there are no unwanted gaps or abrupt transitions.
  2. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Watch for dropped frames, warnings, audio problems, or an ingest mismatch. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance and adjust quality to what the real uplink sustains, rather than assuming the recommended bitrate proves your connection can carry it.
  3. Test a playlist boundary. Let the stream reach the end of the list and confirm it starts over as intended. Check the transition between the last and first files.
  4. Test recovery deliberately. In a controlled test, determine what happens if FFmpeg exits, the host reboots, or the network drops. A process supervisor or service manager can restart a failed process, but it cannot fix invalid media, a revoked or changed stream key, a broken host, or every YouTube-side interruption.
  5. Set up monitoring and access controls. Decide who will receive alerts, who can access the host and stream key, and how an operator can stop the broadcast if the wrong material plays.

Rights and YouTube channel considerations

Clear the exact recordings and performances

Rights can exist separately in the underlying composition or arrangement, the sound recording, and the performance. Confirm permission for the precise files you will send and the territories where viewers may access them. Do not assume a shabad, traditional melody, or devotional recording is automatically free to rebroadcast. The status of a particular Punjabi kirtan recording cannot be determined from its genre or title alone.

Review channel rules and monetization separately

Copyright permission and YouTube channel eligibility are separate questions. Check YouTube’s current rules and notices for your channel, and do not assume that permission to stream a recording guarantees monetization or immunity from claims, restrictions, or interruptions. The technical sources cited for encoder setup do not establish the rights status of your files or the eligibility of your channel.

What 24/7 operation actually requires

Google’s Live Stream API documentation includes a continuous-broadcast scenario, and Google Cloud documentation identifies FFmpeg as an encoder example. That shows that continuous streaming is contemplated in the platform documentation; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime, a maximum-duration policy, automatic FFmpeg reconnection, or a tested service design.

A DIY stream depends on the host, power, storage, media, network, FFmpeg process, and YouTube ingest all continuing to work. Plan for restart behavior and human monitoring, and test the exact arrangement you intend to operate. A command that loops media is only one component of a reliable broadcast.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube does not receive the stream Wrong ingest URL or key, a mismatched protocol, or an inaccessible endpoint. Re-copy the current server URL and key from the Live Control Room, verify the selected protocol, and keep the key private. If it may have leaked, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the sender.
FFmpeg reports an encoder error The installed build may not include the requested encoder, or the input streams may not match the command. Check ffmpeg -version and available encoders. Confirm each playlist file has both audio and video, or adapt the pipeline to supply the missing stream.
Video is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health The chosen bitrate may exceed the sustained upload capacity, or the host/network may be unstable. Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback and lower resolution or bitrate to a sustainable setting. Test under the same network conditions expected during operation.
Audio is missing, distorted, or too quiet Input files may lack an audio stream, have incompatible layouts, or be encoded differently than expected. Inspect the files and test the playlist output locally. Confirm the command’s AAC settings and stereo output are appropriate for the sources.
The playlist stops or fails at a file boundary A file may be missing, have an incompatible stream layout, or use a path that does not resolve from the process working directory. Verify every entry in playlist.txt, use valid paths, and make the media parameters consistent before the long run.
The stream stops after a network or host interruption The FFmpeg process or host may have exited, or the encoder may not have reconnected successfully. Inspect FFmpeg and host logs, test the recovery path, and use a supervisor if appropriate. Do not assume a restart policy covers every failure; verify that the process reconnects to the current YouTube ingest.
