How to Stream Recorded Church Sermons to YouTube from a Synology NAS

Store the sermon on your Synology NAS, play it through OBS on a computer, and send it to a scheduled YouTube Live event with the event’s stream URL and key.

To stream a recorded sermon from a Synology NAS to YouTube Live, use the NAS as file storage and run OBS Studio on a computer that can access the recording. Add the sermon as an OBS Media Source, then connect OBS to a scheduled YouTube Live event using its stream URL and private stream key. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is for live camera streams; it does not document playing a stored sermon file directly to YouTube.

What you need

  • A completed sermon recording stored on your Synology NAS.
  • A computer with OBS Studio installed and access to the NAS folder containing the recording. The generic workflow is supported by OBS’s local-file playback documentation; network-share access is a practical setup, not a Synology-validated end-to-end recipe.
  • A YouTube account able to schedule a live stream and access its Live Control Room.
  • A reliable internet connection from the computer running OBS. The exact bandwidth needed depends on your chosen stream settings and is not established for your setup, so test it before a service.

How to stream one recorded sermon

  1. Confirm the recording is available. From the computer that will run OBS, open the sermon file on the NAS share and confirm it plays. This checks file access before you configure the stream.
  2. Create an OBS scene. In OBS, add a Media Source and select the sermon recording. Set the source to fit the canvas as intended, checking that the picture is not cropped or surrounded by unwanted empty space. OBS documents Media Source playback of local video files and an option to restart the file when playback ends. Enable looping if you want the sermon to repeat; leave it off for a single playback.
  3. Schedule the YouTube Live event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. Copy the stream URL and stream key provided for that event.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS’s stream settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to the corresponding stream. Do not share it publicly or include it in a public document.
  5. Test before the announced service. Start OBS and check that the preview appears in the Live Control Room. Verify sermon audio, picture, aspect ratio, and whether playback starts and ends or loops as you intended. A private or unlisted test is useful for checking the full path without presenting it as the public service.
  6. Start the event and monitor it. YouTube’s scheduled-event flow includes a go-live step in the Live Control Room in addition to starting the encoder. Follow the event’s on-screen controls; sending video from OBS alone may not complete the scheduled-event go-live process.
  7. End the broadcast deliberately. End the stream in the Live Control Room and stop sending from OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

How to play a playlist of sermons

For a sequence of recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than adding each sermon as a separate Media Source. Add the files to the source’s playlist and enable Loop Playlist if it should repeat. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS: OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Test the transitions and audio between files before using the playlist in a live event.

What Synology’s Live Broadcast feature does—and does not do

Synology documents Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature for sending a live camera stream to YouTube. Its setup uses a selected camera and stream profile, plus the YouTube RTMP path and key; Synology says the feature supports H.264. That documentation does not describe selecting and broadcasting a previously recorded sermon file stored on the NAS.

Surveillance Station is video-management software for Synology systems, including NAS and NVR systems, but those general camera-surveillance capabilities do not establish that a particular NAS model or package can encode and stream stored sermon files without a separate computer or compatible software. For the documented recorded-file workflow, keep the recording on the NAS and use OBS on a computer with access to it.

Choose the setup that matches the service

Need Suitable approach What to account for
One sermon, streamed as a scheduled event OBS Media Source Choose whether the file should stop or loop when it reaches the end, and follow YouTube’s scheduled-event go-live step.
A planned sequence of sermons OBS VLC Video playlist source Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS and test playlist order, transitions, and looping.
Continuous prerecorded programming Compare an attended OBS setup with a cloud-based service intended for continuous YouTube streaming The official OBS and YouTube instructions cover playback and scheduling, but do not establish comparative reliability, cost, or fit for a particular church. Check the service’s terms and test the workflow you choose.

Copyright, permissions, and YouTube considerations

Before streaming or archiving a sermon, confirm that your church has permission for every element in the recording that requires it, including music, photographs, video clips, and other third-party material. Permission to perform a song in person does not by itself establish permission to livestream or keep an archived recording online. Check the relevant rights and YouTube’s current policies for your account and region; the setup steps above do not grant rights or guarantee that a stream will remain available.

Troubleshooting

  • The Media Source cannot open the sermon. Confirm the file plays from the OBS computer, that the NAS share is reachable under the account running OBS, and that the selected path points to the recording. If the share disconnects, restore access and test playback before going live.
  • The YouTube preview does not appear. Check that OBS is connected with the correct event’s stream URL and key, then confirm the encoder is sending. For a scheduled event, check the Live Control Room for its separate go-live action.
  • The sermon picture is cropped or has bars. Check the OBS canvas and source fit so the recording’s aspect ratio is presented as intended. Preview the result in the Live Control Room before the service.
  • There is no sound or the level is wrong. Check the Media Source and OBS audio mixer while the file is playing, then listen to the preview. Confirm that the recording itself has an audible audio track.
  • A playlist will not play or loop. Confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS, then check the playlist entries and Loop Playlist setting.
  • The stream stops unexpectedly. Check the OBS computer’s power, network connection, and access to the NAS file. The generic workflow does not guarantee uninterrupted playback; run a full test using the actual equipment and account.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is ongoing prerecorded YouTube programming rather than a single attended event, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload the sermon recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
