You can stream a recorded church service on YouTube without a camera by playing the finished video through an encoder such as OBS and sending that output to a scheduled YouTube live event. If you only need a scheduled group watch—not a live-stream event page—consider a Premiere instead. Before choosing either format, confirm channel eligibility, test playback and audio, and make sure the church has rights for the service’s music and other material.
Choose between an upload, a Premiere, and an encoder stream
- Regular upload: Choose this when people simply need to watch the recording on YouTube. It does not present the video as an encoder-fed live event.
- Premiere: Choose this for a scheduled group viewing experience when you do not need to feed the video through a live encoder.
- Encoder live stream: Choose this when the church wants a YouTube live event page for a service recording. The video is prerecorded, but an encoder plays and sends it during the scheduled event.
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video for streaming; a camera is not required. An encoder can also be used to share a screen or manage a production. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
YouTube Live Redirect can send viewers from a completed live stream to a Premiere, but YouTube’s eligibility guidance requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. See YouTube Live Redirect requirements.
Check channel eligibility before scheduling
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio well before the service. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- A channel with a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days cannot stream. Check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance.
- Decide the event’s title, description, visibility, and audience setting while creating or scheduling the stream in YouTube Studio. The Live Control Room is where you configure and manage the event; see YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
Prepare the recording and OBS scene
Check the video before service day
- Play the whole recording locally, including the beginning and end. Confirm the picture is correct and all spoken audio and music are audible.
- Use a computer that can play the file while running the encoder, and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity.
- Prepare any title card or holding slide you want viewers to see before playback. Ensure it does not obscure or interrupt the service recording.
Set up playback in OBS
OBS is a free, open-source software encoder, according to the OBS Project help portal. Create a scene for the service, add the saved video as a playback source, and check that its audio is routed to the stream. You can add a simple title or holding slide if useful. OBS’s controls and playback behavior can change; consult its current help for exact control labels rather than relying on an assumed click sequence.

Create the YouTube event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule the event. Set its audience, visibility, title, description, and other event details.
- In the Live Control Room, select or create the stream connection details. Connect OBS using the event’s stream URL and stream key, or use a supported YouTube connection flow.
- Treat the stream key as a publishing credential. Do not show it in the OBS preview, a screenshot, a slide, or a public document. If it may have been exposed, reset it from YouTube’s stream settings. See YouTube’s stream setup guidance and StreamNeo’s explanation of stream-key security.
- Start OBS early enough to check the Live Control Room preview before the event begins. Confirm the watch page is accessible from another device, such as a phone, and verify that viewers see and hear the expected content.
Plan bandwidth and a reliable start
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% spare capacity above the total stream bitrate. The stream bitrate is not the only traffic that may use the connection: other devices or services on the same network can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS. Check the connection under realistic conditions and avoid relying on a speed result from an otherwise idle network.
YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event, starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time, and continuously monitoring audio and video. Use the early preview window to catch a silent source, an incorrect scene, a frozen file, or an inaccessible watch page. Details are in YouTube’s stream setup and troubleshooting guidance.

Confirm music and other rights before broadcasting
A church recording may include songs, readings, slides, or other material owned by someone else. YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for having the necessary rights, including music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can cause a placeholder, interruption, or termination. An archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast.
Confirm that the church’s permissions cover the specific online livestream and any archived viewing, not merely an in-person service or another use. If a rights holder requires channel allowlisting, follow its instructions. YouTube’s relevant guidance is available in its Terms of Service and copyright guidance for live streams.

End the stream and check the archive
Stop the encoder after the YouTube event has ended. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; check the resulting video and any rights notices in YouTube Studio. If the event runs 12 hours or longer, do not assume the full stream will be archived automatically. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

The channel cannot go live
Confirm live streaming is enabled and the channel is verified. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check for a live-stream restriction within the past 90 days, which makes the channel ineligible.

The YouTube preview is missing or shows the wrong content
Check that OBS is connected to the stream details for the scheduled event, that the intended scene is selected, and that the video playback source is active. Keep the key private; if it was disclosed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and reconnect OBS with the new key.
The stream stutters or drops
Check actual upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total bitrate. Reduce competing network traffic and test again. A shared connection may have less upload capacity available than a speed test suggests.

Viewers cannot hear the service
Check the recording’s audio locally, then confirm OBS is capturing the playback source’s audio. Listen to the Live Control Room preview or watch page from a second device before the event starts.
YouTube interrupts the live stream or claims the archive
Review the affected material and the relevant rights notices. A license for in-person performance may not establish permission for livestreaming or archived online playback; confirm the rights for both uses with the relevant rights holder.
Alternatives for repeated or continuous broadcasts
For an occasional service, a computer and OBS are a straightforward do-it-yourself route. A dedicated encoder is another option: YouTube’s encoder guide describes AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and mentions optional PlayToStream functionality for prerecorded media. It is an appliance-style alternative, not a requirement for a one-off stream. YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded streaming, a use case more relevant to scheduled or always-on broadcasts than a single service. Product terms, pricing, and service performance are not established here; check each provider’s current details before choosing.
