You can stream a prerecorded video as a scheduled YouTube Live event by scheduling the event in YouTube Studio, then sending its live feed from an encoder running on a cloud server. YouTube provides the event, stream URL and key, preview, and Go live controls; you choose and test the server, playback method, and encoder. This guide covers that do-it-yourself workflow, the settings that matter, and what to verify before relying on it unattended.

What you need to prepare

  • A YouTube channel able to create live streams and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • A prerecorded video stored where the cloud server can read it.
  • A cloud server and an encoder that can play that file, encode or pass through a compatible feed, and sustain the required outbound connection.
  • The scheduled event’s YouTube stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password.

YouTube’s official encoder workflow describes scheduling and ingest, but does not prescribe a cloud provider, server size, file-looping command, process supervisor, or restart policy. Those are implementation choices: test the complete path on your chosen host rather than assuming any particular server will sustain your source and output.

Schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create and choose Go live to open Live Control Room. Schedule a stream from the Manage tab, then set its title, privacy, and event details. You can reuse settings from an earlier event. Scheduling creates a watch page viewers can share and lets them receive reminders. YouTube’s encoder setup guide documents this flow.
  2. Open the scheduled event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder on your server. Use the credentials for that event and keep them out of public scripts, repositories, and logs.
  3. Where the encoder supports it, select RTMPS, YouTube’s RTMP ingest protected by TLS/SSL. Confirm the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming the displayed RTMP address is interchangeable. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  4. Choose whether to start the event manually after checking its preview, or use encoder-driven auto-start/auto-stop if enabled in that event’s settings. Test either choice with an unlisted event before relying on it.

Configure video and audio output

YouTube’s current encoder guidance accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Set constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC where available. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709; for stereo audio it recommends 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz. Use settings supported by both your encoder and the selected ingest workflow. Full guidance is on YouTube’s encoder settings page.

Selected H.264 bitrate recommendations

The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee of what a specific server or connection can sustain. Use the row matching your actual resolution and frame rate; YouTube has separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps

Check the codec-specific row in YouTube’s settings before choosing a bitrate for any other format. The server’s sustained outbound capacity must be sufficient for the selected stream; YouTube recommends testing upload capacity and choosing a quality that can be sent reliably.

Start the encoder and take the event live

  1. Configure the encoder to read the prerecorded file and send the selected audio/video format to the scheduled event’s ingest URL using its stream key. The exact playback and looping controls depend on your encoder; verify that it handles the file, audio, duration, and intended end-of-file behavior as required.
  2. Start the encoder early. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting at least 15 minutes before the event. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room.
  3. Check preview picture and sound, stream health, and the event’s watch page. With manual start, click Go live when the preview is ready. If you chose auto-start, confirm in a test that the encoder and event transition as expected.
  4. Monitor audio, video, and network continuity throughout the broadcast. At the end, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder, unless a tested auto-stop setup handles the transition.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically.

Test cloud playback and recovery before scheduling for real

YouTube recommends testing the encoder’s failover, checking that the local archive file is growing, confirming event access from channel and watch pages, and continuously monitoring quality. For cloud playback, adapt these checks to the actual system: verify the source file is accessible and the server-side output is advancing. A local archive check does not verify media stored in the cloud. Test a full event—including the scheduled start, playback end or loop behavior, and any restart process—on the selected host.

Cloud capacity, sustained egress, unattended playback, and recovery after a process or connection failure depend on your server, encoder, source media, network, and hosting terms. The YouTube documentation does not set a server size or define a restart strategy for prerecorded playback.

Protect the stream key

  • Store the key in a secure configuration or secrets store rather than hard-coding it into a public script.
  • Do not include it in logs, screenshots, or shared setup notes.
  • If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains stream-key management and the auto-start and auto-stop options.

Choose the right ingest and start method

Manual Go live or encoder auto-start

Manual confirmation gives you a chance to inspect the preview before starting the scheduled event. Auto-start and auto-stop can reduce hands-on transitions when supported and enabled, but make a test event part of setup: confirm the encoder handles the stream state and that the event starts and stops at the intended points. YouTube documents both the scheduled encoder flow and these stream settings, not a guarantee that every encoder will behave identically.

RTMPS or HLS

RTMPS is the encrypted RTMP option to prefer when your encoder supports it. YouTube also documents HLS for supported workflows; its HLS guidance notes higher latency because video is sent in segments. Check the chosen encoder’s supported protocols, codecs, and latency requirements, then use a protocol supported by both sides. See YouTube’s HLS guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No preview in Live Control Room Wrong event credentials, ingest URL, protocol, or encoder output. Confirm the URL and key belong to the scheduled event, check whether the encoder is using the matching RTMP or RTMPS address, and verify the encoder is sending a supported feed.
Preview appears but the event has not started The event still needs manual confirmation, or auto-start is not enabled or not behaving as expected. For manual start, inspect the preview and click Go live. For auto-start, check the event setting and repeat the test with an unlisted event.
Video stutters or stream health degrades The selected bitrate may exceed sustained server egress, or the encoder/network cannot maintain the output. Match the bitrate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate; test capacity and lower output quality if the connection cannot sustain it reliably.
Audio or picture is missing or wrong Source-file, encoder, or output configuration issue. Check the source file’s playback on the server, selected audio track, codec compatibility, and preview before starting the event.
Stream stops unexpectedly Playback ended, the encoder process stopped, or the network/server interrupted the feed. Test end-of-file behavior, process supervision, and restart handling on the selected host. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not prescribe those cloud-side mechanisms.
Key no longer works or may be exposed The key is wrong, belongs to another event, or was compromised/reset. Verify the event’s current key in Live Control Room; reset it there if exposed and update the encoder’s secure configuration.
