To stream from a Windows VPS with OBS, make sure your YouTube channel is eligible for live streaming, create a stream in YouTube Studio, enter its server URL and stream key in OBS, then test the feed before going live. The key decision is whether the VPS can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate while sustaining the required upload bitrate; OBS and YouTube settings alone cannot guarantee that.
Before you start: confirm YouTube and VPS readiness
Check your channel’s live-streaming eligibility
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days before you can stream using an encoder. Check the current eligibility and setup flow in YouTube Help’s live-streaming instructions, since platform rules and interface labels can change.
Check what the VPS actually provides
There is no universal vCPU, RAM, or GPU specification that guarantees an OBS stream. OBS warns that a compatible system does not necessarily have enough capacity to stream or record; demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (OBS Project system requirements).
Before choosing a VPS plan, verify the Windows guest’s available CPU capacity, whether it exposes a hardware encoder if you intend to use one, sustained outbound bandwidth, and any transfer limits. Confirm you can remotely access and control the OBS session for the full event. General OBS and YouTube guidance does not certify a particular VPS provider or plan.

Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio. Use the Create / Go Live flow to create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s current instructions are at support.google.com/youtube/answer/2474026.
- Copy the ingest details. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key for the event. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it or share it in screenshots; reset it if it is compromised.
- Set OBS to use YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter or paste the server URL and stream key. If OBS presents a connection-method choice, use RTMPS where supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection (YouTube’s RTMPS guidance).
- Configure the output and scene. Set the encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio options described below. Add the media or scene you intend to broadcast, then check that the right video and audio sources are active.
- Start sending the encoder feed. Click Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and inspect the picture, sound, and stream-health messages before you take the event live.
- Go live in YouTube Studio. For a scheduled stream, once the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting OBS sends the feed; it does not necessarily publish the event to viewers by itself.
Choose OBS settings that fit YouTube and the VPS
Video codec, rate control, and keyframes
YouTube’s current encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. For standard-dynamic-range video, its guidance specifies Rec. 709 (YouTube encoder settings).
Use a codec your OBS encoder and VPS can actually produce. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU demand when the VPS exposes compatible hardware, but do not assume that a virtual machine includes usable GPU or encoder access. If the chosen encoder cannot keep up, reduce resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity and test again.

Set bitrate for both the stream and the connection
The following are YouTube’s published recommended video bitrates, not measurements of VPS performance or a guarantee that a given plan can sustain them. For AV1/H.265, the listed rate is the same for both codecs at each resolution and frame rate shown.

These figures are YouTube’s recommendations published on its encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. Choose a bitrate your VPS can sustain consistently, not just one that fits a brief speed-test peak. YouTube recommends testing the available connection; in practice, allow headroom for bitrate variation and other traffic rather than planning to use every bit of measured upload capacity.

Audio settings
For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps and lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Check OBS’s audio meters and listen to the Live Control Room preview: a moving meter does not establish that the correct source is being sent or that viewers can hear it.
Test the stream before the event
- Run a representative test. Test with motion and audio similar to what you will actually stream, using the intended resolution, frame rate, and scene setup. A static desktop scene is not a useful load test for a high-motion broadcast.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm the image is correct, audio is audible, and Live Control Room does not report ingest or connection problems. Fix issues before clicking Go live.
- Monitor throughout the event. Watch OBS’s status and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A VPS can have sufficient capacity in theory but still encounter a CPU bottleneck, encoder issue, or unstable outbound connection in practice.
- Build in production time. YouTube’s event tips recommend setting up encoders at least two hours ahead and starting them at least 15 minutes before the event. These are production recommendations, not technical prerequisites; use the lead time to confirm the preview and resolve problems.
Troubleshoot common failures

Copyright and YouTube monetization considerations
Technical success does not establish that you have rights to everything in the stream or that the content meets YouTube’s monetization rules. Use video, music, and other material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current policies for the type of content and monetization you intend. A recurring or prerecorded stream is not automatically exempt from copyright claims or reused-content review. Review the rights and content before scheduling rather than relying on the fact that OBS can send it.
