OpenClaw can turn a Gmail or IMAP inbox into a scheduled digest: keep it running on an always-on machine, grant a reader agent limited mailbox access, classify new messages, extract deadlines and action items, and deliver the result to Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack, or email. Start with read-only access and require explicit approval before any reply or mailbox change.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenClaw, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
The reliable setup is a pipeline rather than a single switch. You choose a continuous runtime, connect the mailbox, define a deterministic summarization prompt, select either a cron schedule or an event-driven watcher, and then lock down the agent that handles untrusted email.

What an OpenClaw email digest does
An automated digest should answer the questions that normally force you to open every message: what arrived, which items are important, what is due, and what action is expected next. OpenClaw can read recent or unread messages, group related threads, classify them, extract deadlines and open questions, and send a concise report to a channel you already monitor.
A practical first classification is:
- VIP: messages from people or organizations whose mail should be seen promptly.
- Action-required: requests, approvals, bugs, invoices, scheduling changes, or other items that need a response or task.
- FYI: useful information that does not require an immediate action.
- Promotion: newsletters, offers, and other low-priority bulk mail.
For an important message, the digest should include the sender, a two-sentence summary, any deadline, open questions, and the next action. Related messages should be grouped by thread or project so that a long conversation does not appear as a dozen separate alerts.

Choose a runtime that stays awake
Recurring checks cannot run while the computer hosting OpenClaw is asleep. A local laptop is suitable for testing a workflow manually, but it is not a dependable scheduler if its lid is closed, it loses power, or it disconnects from the network.
For a daily or hourly digest, run OpenClaw on an always-on machine or managed deployment. A VPS is another option when you need a continuously available process and control over the operating system. Whichever host you choose, verify that the OpenClaw process restarts after a reboot and that its clock and network connection remain healthy.

|---|---|---|
| Sleeping or intermittently connected laptop | Writing prompts and running a manual test | Misses scheduled checks while asleep or offline |
| Always-on local machine | Private operation when you can maintain the hardware and network | You are responsible for power, uptime, updates, and recovery |
| VPS or managed OpenClaw deployment | Daily digests and unattended watchers | Requires careful credential storage and host hardening |
Do not connect your main mailbox first. Create a dedicated inbox or use an account with limited access, then prove that the digest is accurate before expanding the scope.
Connect Gmail or an IMAP mailbox
Gmail and generic IMAP are separate integration paths. Gmail provides an event-driven Watch/Pub/Sub route; the bundled IMAP watcher is an inbound-only alternative that is disabled by default.
Gmail prerequisites
Authorize the Gmail account through the supported Gmail path before configuring webhooks. The Gmail account must already be authorized in gog. Use an account intended for the reader agent, and begin with read permissions rather than send or modify permissions.
Set up Gmail Watch and Pub/Sub
OpenClaw’s official CLI setup command is:
openclaw webhooks gmail setup --account <email>
This command authenticates gcloud, provisions or updates the Pub/Sub topic and subscription, configures the push endpoint, starts the Gmail watch, and writes the resulting configuration to hooks.gmail.

Important Gmail defaults
- Body snippets are enabled by default.
- Each message body is limited to 20,000 bytes by default.
- The watch is renewed every 720 minutes by default.
allowUnsafeExternalContentdefaults tofalse; keep it disabled for untrusted email.
A Gmail Watch is a notification mechanism, not a summary by itself. When a notification arrives, the reader workflow still has to fetch the relevant messages, apply the time or unread filter, generate the digest, and deliver it.
Use the bundled IMAP watcher
The 2026.8.1 release notes describe a bundled IMAP watcher for mailboxes that are not Gmail or for installations that prefer an inbound trigger without exposing an HTTP hook. It is disabled by default and inbound-only.
Enable it only after configuring authentication and sender allowlisting. It cannot send or modify mail. After three temporary admission failures, a message is recorded as skipped, so inspect the logs when expected mail does not trigger a run. Because this watcher is inbound-only, it cannot replace a full outbound email integration.
Define the digest workflow
Build the workflow in a fixed order so that each run is predictable:
- Select the window. Read messages received since the previous successful run, or use an explicit window such as “the last 24 hours.” Decide how unread status is handled so a message is not repeatedly reported forever.
- Collect the minimum fields. Fetch sender, recipients when relevant, subject, timestamp, thread identifier, body text, and any available attachment names. Keep the first version read-only.
- Classify messages. Apply the VIP, action-required, FYI, and promotion categories. Store the category with the message or in the run result so the output can be audited.
- Group related threads. Combine follow-ups about the same request, project, or incident. Preserve the newest status and note unresolved questions.
- Extract decisions and dates. Identify explicit deadlines, meeting times, requested approvals, owners, and dependencies. If a date is ambiguous, label it as uncertain instead of inventing a date.
- Render a short digest. Put urgent or deadline-bound items first, then action-required items, then FYI and promotions. Include links or message identifiers only when the receiving channel can use them safely.
- Deliver without side effects. Send the report to the selected channel. Do not archive, label, forward, delete, or reply unless a separate approved action is requested.
For a game project, for example, the workflow might group a build certification thread, an art vendor request, and a launch-date change into separate project sections while placing a same-day approval deadline at the top. The grouping rule matters more than the exact wording of the summary.

Use a deterministic prompt
A prompt should define the input window, categories, required fields, destination, and permission boundary. This template is a practical starting point:
Check messages received since the last run. Classify each as VIP, action-required, FYI, or promotion. For important messages, list sender, a two-sentence summary, deadlines, open questions, and the next action. Group related threads. Send the digest to the selected channel. Draft replies only when requested, and never send without explicit approval.
Add project-specific rules only after the baseline works. Useful additions include a maximum number of words per item, a separate section for deadlines within 48 hours, and an instruction to quote only the minimum text needed to disambiguate a request.
Specify failure behavior
Tell the workflow what to do when information is missing. For example, it can mark a deadline as “not stated,” identify the sender as unknown, or place a message in a review section when classification confidence is low. It should report an authentication or retrieval failure rather than sending an empty digest that looks successful.
Prevent accidental replies
Use language that distinguishes analysis from action: “Draft replies only when requested, and never send without explicit approval.” Enforce the same rule with permissions and tool access; a prompt alone is not a sufficient control for an agent that can call mail APIs.
Schedule the digest
Choose the trigger based on how quickly a message must be surfaced and how much operational complexity you can maintain.
| Trigger | Behavior | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cron | Runs at fixed times, such as every morning or every hour | You want a predictable batch report | Messages wait until the next scheduled run |
| Gmail Watch/Pub/Sub | Starts processing from Gmail’s event-driven notification path | Near-real-time handling matters | Requires Google Cloud authentication, Pub/Sub configuration, watch renewal, and a secured push endpoint |
| Inbound IMAP watcher | Triggers from an authenticated, allowlisted inbound message | The mailbox is not Gmail or you prefer an inbound-only trigger | Disabled by default; cannot send or modify mail; failed admissions can be skipped after three temporary failures |
Cron is usually the simplest first deployment. Run a manual digest, compare it with the mailbox, and then schedule it. Event-driven handling is appropriate for incident mail, access alerts, or time-sensitive approvals, but it has more components to monitor.

Choose where summaries are delivered
OpenClaw documents Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack, and email as delivery choices. Select the channel the intended reader already checks, and avoid sending sensitive content to a group conversation by mistake.
- Telegram: useful for a private chat or a small operational group.
- WhatsApp: convenient when the team already uses it for urgent communication.
- Slack: suitable for project channels, provided access to the channel is restricted.
- Email: useful when the digest must be retained in a conventional mailbox, but avoid creating a loop that causes the digest to summarize itself.
Keep the destination configurable. During testing, send to yourself; only after the format and permissions are verified should you add a team channel or additional recipients.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Secure the reader agent before processing mail
Email bodies, attachments, and quoted text are untrusted input. They can contain instructions that look authoritative but are actually attempts to make the agent reveal data, call tools, or send messages. Treat every message as data to summarize, not as a command to obey.
Separate transport from agent restrictions
Completing the Gmail setup command does not secure the processing agent. Configure a dedicated reader agent, isolated sessions, allowed session-key prefixes, and the minimum tools needed to read and summarize. A transport webhook should not hand an untrusted inbox to an agent that can administer the host or access unrelated accounts.

Why approval gates matter
A 2026 safety evaluation tested 12 attack scenarios across four backbone models. Poisoning one Capability, Identity, or Knowledge dimension raised average attack success from 24.6% to 64–74%, according to Zijun Wang and coauthors (2026). Even the strongest tested defense recorded a 63.8% success rate under Capability-targeted attacks. These results do not predict the exact behavior of your deployment, but they demonstrate why broad permissions and automatic replies are unsafe defaults.
Keep replies, forwarding, deletion, labeling, archiving, and other mailbox changes behind explicit approval. The digest can propose a reply or next action, but a person should confirm the exact operation and recipient before it executes.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Test the workflow safely
- Use a test mailbox. Send representative messages covering a deadline, a long thread, a newsletter, an attachment notice, and an ambiguous request.
- Run one manual summary. Check that the time window includes the intended messages and excludes older mail.
- Compare against the mailbox. Verify sender names, dates, thread grouping, deadlines, and action items manually.
- Test hostile content. Include a message that tells the agent to ignore previous instructions or disclose a secret. The output should summarize that text as content and take no tool action.
- Test delivery failure. Temporarily make the destination unavailable and confirm that the run reports an error instead of silently discarding the digest.
- Enable the schedule. Start with a conservative frequency and review several runs before increasing volume or adding recipients.
- Keep actions disabled. If reply drafting is useful, allow drafts but require a human approval step before sending.
Troubleshoot common failures
No digest appears while the laptop is closed
The runtime is asleep or offline. Move the scheduled process to an always-on host, or accept that a local laptop can only run checks while it is awake and connected.
Gmail webhook setup succeeds but nothing is summarized
Confirm that the account is authorized in gog, the Gmail watch is active, the Pub/Sub subscription reaches the configured endpoint, and the reader agent is actually attached to the hook. Remember that the CLI command configures transport; it does not create the restricted reader policy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Messages arrive but body text is incomplete
Check the 20,000-byte per-message body limit and whether the message content is stored in an attachment or an unsupported format. Ask the digest to report truncation rather than implying that it saw the full message.
Notifications stop after several hours
Gmail watches require renewal. The documented default is every 720 minutes, so inspect the renewal job, credentials, and process uptime if notifications stop around that interval.
IMAP messages are skipped
Verify authentication and sender allowlisting. The IMAP watcher is disabled by default, is inbound-only, and records a message as skipped after three temporary admission failures. Review the watcher’s logs and correct the admission condition before retrying.
The digest contains instructions from an email
That is a prompt-injection warning. Keep the message as untrusted content, isolate the session, remove unnecessary tools, and ensure no send or modify capability is available. Do not “fix” the issue by giving the agent a more permissive prompt.
The digest sends itself repeatedly
If delivery is by email, exclude the digest’s sender, subject marker, or destination mailbox from the input filter. A stable run identifier and an explicit “ignore previous digest messages” rule can provide an additional safeguard, but filtering at the mailbox query is preferable.
Operating checklist
- Is the host continuously running and monitored?
- Is the mailbox dedicated or limited to the messages the agent needs?
- Are Gmail authorization, Pub/Sub delivery, or IMAP admission logs healthy?
- Does the prompt specify a time window, categories, required fields, and destination?
- Are body truncation and missing dates reported honestly?
- Is the reader agent isolated with minimal tools and approved session-key prefixes?
- Is unsafe external content disabled?
- Are replies and mailbox changes approval-gated?
- Can a person audit which messages produced each digest item?
- Is there a recovery plan for expired credentials, failed delivery, or a compromised host?
When to use each implementation
Use a cron-based Gmail or IMAP read-only digest when the goal is a morning or end-of-day summary and a delay of up to one schedule interval is acceptable. Choose Gmail Watch/Pub/Sub when near-real-time notifications justify the additional Google Cloud and webhook maintenance. Choose the inbound IMAP watcher when the mailbox is not Gmail or when you need an inbound-only trigger that cannot alter mail.
In every case, keep the first deployment narrow: one mailbox, one reader agent, one delivery destination, and no automatic actions. Expand only after manual comparisons show that classification, grouping, and deadline extraction are reliable for your mail.
