It depends on what you mean by “custom” and which edition you play. In Bedrock Edition, you can summon a villager with a profession, such as a farmer, and optionally give it a name. For Java Edition, custom villager data and trades use version-sensitive entity data; the sources available here do not establish a current, reliable copy-and-paste command for custom trades.
Summon a farmer villager in Bedrock Edition
Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference gives this example:
/summon villager ~ ~2 ~ minecraft:spawn_farmer
This summons a villager two blocks above the command executor and invokes the minecraft:spawn_farmer spawn event. The command reference describes /summon as a way to summon an entity and documents optional position, rotation, name-tag, and spawn-event arguments. See Microsoft’s Bedrock /summon command reference, last updated March 10, 2026.
Bedrock’s documented syntax does not provide a summon argument for arbitrary villager entity data or custom trades. The example creates a farmer; it does not set a custom trading inventory.

What “custom” can mean
- Name: Bedrock’s reference includes an optional
nameTagargument. If the name contains spaces or special characters, check the syntax for your Bedrock release. - Profession: The documented farmer example uses the
minecraft:spawn_farmerspawn event. - Appearance, level, or trades: These involve villager data beyond the Bedrock summon options documented in the reference. Do not assume the farmer example changes those details.
Java Edition: custom data and trades are version-sensitive
Java Edition summon commands can include entity data, and community examples use fields such as VillagerData, CustomName, and Offers to customize villagers. A community tutorial is available at Minecraft Wiki’s useful commands tutorial, but its currency is not confirmed here. Treat its examples as leads, not as guaranteed syntax for your release.
In particular, do not paste an older custom-trade command into a current Java version without checking its item-data format. Minecraft’s official 24w09a snapshot notes, published February 28, 2024, say that unstructured item-stack NBT in the tag field was replaced by structured components. The notes also explain that legacy {...} item syntax was wired to minecraft:custom_data in that snapshot’s command context. This documents an item-data change; it is not a complete guide to current villager entity data or custom-trade syntax.
