To summon and fight a Lair Boss in Diablo 4, reach Torment I or higher, find its lair on the map, then enter and start the encounter—you do not spend keys to begin the fight. After the boss dies, each player spends their own keys to open an individual reward Hoard. That distinction is the core of Blizzard’s Lair Boss rework.
How to start a Lair Boss fight
- Reach Torment I or higher. Blizzard’s Lair Boss rework requires this difficulty to fight any Lair Boss. See the Season 8 update notes.
- Find the lair. Discovered Lair Bosses have a distinct map icon, and you can teleport directly to a discovered lair. Its map description names the key for the reward Hoard and indicates whether you have enough.
- Enter and fight. The encounter itself does not require boss materials or keys under the rework, so you can try the fight before deciding whether to spend keys on its rewards.
- After the kill, open the Hoard. Each player uses their own keys to claim their individual Hoard. A party member cannot pay the keys for everyone’s rewards.
How many keys the Hoard requires
Blizzard’s Season 8 notes give these tier counts. Treat them as the rework’s stated counts, not a guarantee that every live-season key name or quantity is unchanged: check the boss’s current in-game map description before opening its Hoard.
| Hoard tier | Keys required | Examples of key names in Blizzard’s Season 8 notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initiate | 12 | Malignant Heart for Varshan; Living Steel for Grigoire; Distilled Fear for Beast in the Ice; Exquisite Blood for Lord Zir; Judicator’s Mask for Urivar |
| Greater | 3 | Shard of Agony for Duriel; Pin-Cushioned Doll for Andariel |
| Exalted | 2 | Hatred Hearts for Harbinger of Hatred; Betrayer’s Husk for Belial |
The notes also say an Initiate Lair Boss can drop a Stygian Stone, which can be converted into a Greater Lair Boss key. They list Helltide chests as a source of Living Steel, Nightmare Dungeons for Distilled Fear, and Blood Maiden, Legion Events, and World Bosses for Exquisite Blood. These are examples from the Season 8 rework; use live in-game tooltips to confirm current key sources and names.
Current seasonal example: Corrupted Reaper
Blizzard’s Season 14-era 3.1 patch notes identify Corrupted Reaper as a seasonal Lair Boss. The 3.1 PTR notes place it at the entrance to Pandemonium Threshold in Zarbinzet, say the PTR encounter is available at Torment I or higher, and state that after Season 14 launches the seasonal Lair Boss becomes available through the Season Campaign. They identify Betrayer’s Husks as the item required to open its reward cache. The PTR description does not document a complete live campaign unlock route, so consult the current campaign and in-game boss information for access details.

The official 3.1 patch notes include live Season of Death Awakening updates through August 12, 2026, and state that resummoning Corrupted Reaper clears the previous Reaper’s corpse. This confirms repeat encounters, but does not specify a full unlock walkthrough.
Optional harder seasonal encounters
In its March 11, 2026 patch notes, Blizzard describes Bloodstained Sigils for summoning more powerful versions of Lair Bosses, Nightmare Dungeons, and Infernal Hordes on the seasonal realm; Bloodsoaked Sigils provide a more extreme challenge. This is a seasonal-realm feature described in patch 2.6, not a claim about every realm or later season. Check the live game to see whether these sigils are available in your current season.

Why old boss-material guides may not match
Older guides often describe spending materials to summon a boss. Blizzard’s Season of Blood guide lists that former system: Living Steel for Grigoire; body parts and a Malignant Heart for Varshan; Distilled Fear and a crafted Nightmare Sigil for Beast in the Ice; Exquisite Blood for Lord Zir; and materials from Grigoire and Varshan for Duriel. That guide predates the Lair Boss Hoard and key rework. Under the rework, keys are for opening the Hoard after the kill, not for universally starting the encounter.

What to check before you go
- Make sure you are on Torment I or higher.
- Use the map description for the discovered boss’s current key name and Hoard requirement.
- If you are playing in a party, plan for each player to bring their own keys for their own Hoard.
- For Corrupted Reaper or sigil-enhanced encounters, verify current seasonal access and availability in-game; the published notes do not establish a complete Season 14 boss roster or every unlock route.
