To carry a new settlement through its first winter in Farthest Frontier, secure four basics before cold weather: food, firewood, shelter, and a Town Center site near useful resources without placing the town in unnecessary danger. The right opening varies with difficulty and the map, so use your live resource totals rather than chasing a supposed universal stockpile target.
Choose a site for food and safety
Before placing the Town Center, scan its surroundings for natural food sources the settlement can use early: berry bushes, fishable water, and deer. Also check for threats. Crate Entertainment’s basic gameplay guide specifically calls out wolves and boars as dangers to consider when choosing a location.
The Harvest tool can gather trees and rocks for construction, but harvesting takes settlement labor. Clear what you need for immediate building and production rather than stripping a broad area without a reason; workers assigned to gathering are workers unavailable for other early needs.
Build an early food supply from what the map offers
Natural sources can feed a small settlement while it gets established. The best mix depends on what is nearby and how much labor each option needs; the official food guide does not rank one source as a universal winner.

These options and their roles are described in Crate Entertainment’s food guide. Check the in-game resource summary as stocks change, and adjust workers or gathering priorities when supplies run low. Starting resources differ with difficulty, and the map determines which natural sources are available, so no single food reserve figure guarantees survival.
Make firewood before winter
Raw logs are not a substitute for a ready firewood supply. The Firewood Splitter is available from the start, so establish firewood production while there is still time to build and staff it. The basic guide warns that running out of firewood when winter arrives can quickly put the settlement in danger.

Watch the stored-resource totals in the top HUD as cold weather approaches. The official guidance gives no universal firewood target; needs vary with the settlement, so respond to your own stock and the warnings shown in the game rather than relying on a fixed number.
Provide shelter, including near remote work
Food and shelter are core needs. Make sure villagers have housing, but avoid building a large surplus without a concrete need: construction uses materials and labor that may be needed elsewhere.

Distance matters for villagers working away from town. Temporary Shelters near remote workplaces, such as mines and work camps, let workers reach shelter nearby and can help them work longer. The buildings guide covers these structures and their uses.
Protect gathered food from spoilage
Food spoils, and spoiled food is not safe to eat. A settlement can gather plenty and still lose useful supply if storage is poor, so pay attention to the resource summary’s spoilage information rather than producing more perishables blindly.

- Use root cellars for better food preservation than storehouses.
- Upgrade storage for improved insulation.
- Use barrels to delay spoilage for many foods.
- Process food where possible to extend its shelf life.

Guided Start
In version 1.1.0, Crate Entertainment added Guided Start, enabled by default for a first settlement, with objectives that guide players toward Tier 2. The notes were posted April 9, 2026. Shelter Inside
Version 1.1.1 added a Shelter Inside command to the Town Center, according to Crate Entertainment’s notes posted May 14, 2026. It orders villagers to garrison in the Town Center where possible and sends the rest to their homes. Activating it pauses all production until the command is deactivated, so treat it as an alert or protection measure—not as a way to heat homes or meet routine winter needs.
