How to Switch a 24/7 YouTube Podcast Stream from OBS to FFmpeg Without Changing Its URL

A careful OBS-to-FFmpeg handoff keeps the existing broadcast and stream key in place, then checks the incoming preview, health status, and public URL.

You can switch a 24/7 podcast stream from OBS to FFmpeg without deliberately changing its YouTube watch-page URL: keep the existing YouTube broadcast and use its existing ingestion URL and stream key in FFmpeg. YouTube treats the encoder’s stream settings and the public broadcast as separate things. But its documentation does not guarantee that a particular watch-page URL will survive every disconnect, restart, key reset, or broadcast change, so verify the actual URL during a controlled handoff.

What has to stay the same to preserve your YouTube live URL?

Your encoder sends video and audio to YouTube using ingestion settings: a server URL and a stream key. The public watch page belongs to the live broadcast. YouTube’s API describes these as separate resources: a reusable stream carries encoder delivery settings, while a broadcast is the viewer-facing event. A stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times, and YouTube’s documentation includes a 24/7 feed example alongside a separate interview broadcast.

That distinction is why changing encoders does not, by itself, require creating a new broadcast. To try to keep the same public page, leave the intended broadcast in place and point FFmpeg at the existing ingestion settings. Do not create a replacement broadcast just to connect the new encoder. The exact URL outcome still needs to be checked for your channel and this specific handoff.

Stream key and watch-page URL are not interchangeable

  • Ingestion URL and stream key: the destination and credential FFmpeg needs to send a signal to YouTube. YouTube says previous settings may load when you return to the Stream tab.
  • Watch-page URL: the public page for the broadcast viewers open. Preserve the intended broadcast in Live Control Room and check this URL after switching.

Treat the stream key like a password. Retrieve it through YouTube Studio, store it securely, and do not paste it into a public post, screenshot, shared document, or command you plan to publish. If the key has been reset, the old key will not serve as the current credential; check the active settings in Studio rather than guessing.

Before switching, record the working OBS and YouTube setup

Do this while OBS is still streaming successfully, or before you stop it. You need enough information to reproduce the outgoing stream and to roll back if FFmpeg does not connect cleanly.

  • In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and identify the active or scheduled broadcast. Record its public watch-page URL, title, privacy setting, and whether it is scheduled or already live.
  • In the stream settings, securely record the current server/ingestion URL and stream key. Confirm these are the settings for the stream associated with the intended broadcast.
  • Record OBS’s actual output behavior: input sources, audio and video codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe/GOP interval, audio sample rate, channel layout, and output protocol. Use the values currently in force, not assumptions based on what a podcast stream usually uses.
  • Identify what produces the show. FFmpeg can send a media file or a configured set of inputs, but replacing OBS’s scenes, overlays, microphone routing, or other live sources may require recreating those parts in FFmpeg. A simple file-loop command is not equivalent to an OBS production with multiple live sources.
  • Keep OBS and its working configuration available until the new feed has passed the checks below. Avoid changing the stream key, broadcast, and encoder at the same time.

Prepare FFmpeg to match the existing stream

FFmpeg needs the same content source, compatible outgoing audio/video, and the existing YouTube ingestion destination and key. YouTube’s API documentation says an encoder may accept the ingestion URL and stream name separately or as a combined address; use the form accepted by your FFmpeg output. The example below uses an environment variable containing the complete output destination, including any required stream name/key. It deliberately does not include a real YouTube address or key.

export INPUT='/path/to/your-podcast-video.mp4'
export YT_OUTPUT_URL='<existing-ingestion-address-and-stream-key>'
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "$INPUT" -c copy -f flv "$YT_OUTPUT_URL"

Replace the input path with your actual media file and set the output variable privately to the destination format your FFmpeg output accepts. The angle-bracket text is explanatory, not a literal value to paste. Do not share shell history or logs if they could expose the key.

This is a starting point for a pre-encoded file that is compatible with YouTube’s receiving settings. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, -re reads a file at its normal playback rate, and -c copy avoids re-encoding its audio and video. It does not recreate OBS scenes, encode incompatible media, or guarantee a successful connection. If the current OBS feed uses a live microphone, overlays, multiple sources, or encoding settings that differ from the file, configure the FFmpeg inputs and output accordingly rather than assuming this command is equivalent. YouTube’s health status and Live Control Room preview are the checks that determine whether the result is usable.

Match the settings that affect continuity and stream health

Setting What to carry over or verify
Content and inputs Use the same podcast media or recreate the same live inputs and audio routing. Verify that intended overlays and video are present.
Video and audio codecs Match the working OBS output where possible, and make sure the resulting codecs are supported. YouTube health diagnostics can flag missing or unsupported codecs.
Resolution and frame rate Keep the existing output dimensions and frame rate unless you intentionally want to change the stream. Compare the incoming preview, not just FFmpeg’s local input.
Bitrate Use the current OBS output target as your reference. A mismatch can contribute to poor health or starvation; there is no one bitrate established here for every podcast stream.
Keyframe interval/GOP Match the known-good OBS interval. YouTube health diagnostics can report an incorrect GOP or keyframe frequency.
Audio sample rate and channels Preserve the working sample rate and channel layout, and check that the received audio is present and correctly routed.
Protocol and destination Use the existing YouTube ingestion settings and a protocol/output format supported by the chosen FFmpeg build. YouTube documents RTMP (including RTMPS), HLS, and DASH ingestion; changing from OBS to FFmpeg does not itself require switching to HLS.

Switch encoders in a controlled handoff

  1. Confirm the existing broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, verify which broadcast is intended to remain available and keep its watch-page URL at hand. Do not create a new broadcast for this encoder change.
  2. Prepare FFmpeg before disconnecting OBS. Confirm the input works, the output destination is built from the existing ingestion settings, and your command matches the stream format as closely as practical. Protect the stream key.
  3. Stop or disconnect OBS only when FFmpeg is ready. Avoid running both encoders against the same stream key as a way to test; the controlled change is to move the outgoing feed to FFmpeg.
  4. Start FFmpeg and watch Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes an incoming preview. Check the preview and health indicators for the intended video and audio, and investigate warnings before treating the handoff as complete.
  5. For a scheduled broadcast, follow the Studio prompt. YouTube’s setup instructions distinguish the encoder connecting from the operator clicking “Go live” for a scheduled stream. Do not assume that a successful FFmpeg connection alone publishes a scheduled event.
  6. Test the public URL separately. Open the established watch-page URL in a separate viewer session. Confirm playback, audio, video, title, and privacy. A healthy encoder connection does not by itself prove that viewers are on the expected broadcast page.
  7. Retire the rollback option only after validation. Keep the known-good OBS setup available until the public page and stream health checks pass. If they do not, stop FFmpeg and restore the prior encoder configuration without creating a new broadcast unless you have decided to replace the event.

Will the live video or watch page stay the same after a restart?

YouTube’s documentation distinguishes the reusable ingestion stream from individual broadcasts, but it does not promise that an exact watch-page URL remains valid after every encoder interruption, restart, stream-key reset, or broadcast recreation. Therefore, treat URL continuity as something to verify on your channel, not a guaranteed outcome of using FFmpeg.

A brief encoder restart and a new broadcast are not the same operation. Keep the intended broadcast selected in Live Control Room, avoid creating another one during the migration, and test the old public URL after the new encoder connects. If the broadcast itself has ended or been replaced, retaining the old stream key alone does not establish that the same viewer page is still live.

Plan for archives on a nominal 24/7 channel

YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That matters for a channel intended to run continuously: do not assume a single broadcast will produce one uninterrupted archive covering an indefinite 24/7 period. Check how the current broadcast is configured and inspect the resulting archive behavior separately from the live URL. YouTube’s 24/7 example shows a continuing feed and a distinct interview broadcast, but it is not a universal guarantee about what every encoder restart will do to a channel’s page or archive.

Troubleshoot a failed or unhealthy handoff

What you see Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg does not connect to YouTube Destination format, ingestion address, key, or output protocol. Recheck the active server URL and key in YouTube Studio. Ensure the address is supplied in the format accepted by the FFmpeg output, and do not expose the key while debugging.
YouTube shows no incoming preview Encoder delivery may not be reaching the intended stream. Check FFmpeg’s connection output and the destination settings, then verify the correct stream is selected in Live Control Room.
Preview appears but video or audio is missing Input selection, codecs, or audio routing. Confirm the intended source is being read and inspect the incoming preview. A successful connection does not prove both media tracks are present.
Health warning reports unsupported or missing codecs FFmpeg is sending an incompatible or incomplete audio/video format. Compare the actual output codecs with the working OBS configuration and adjust the FFmpeg output to produce supported media.
Health warning reports GOP/keyframe frequency The FFmpeg keyframe pattern differs from what YouTube expects for the stream. Compare the outgoing GOP/keyframe interval with the recorded OBS setting and correct the output configuration.
Health warning points to bitrate or ingestion starvation The feed may not be sustaining the intended delivery rate, or the bitrate differs materially from the working setup. Compare actual output behavior against OBS and inspect the health status while the feed runs. Do not infer a universal target bitrate from the warning alone.
Primary and backup configuration warning The configured primary and optional backup ingestion settings may not match. Check the active ingestion configuration in Studio/API-backed settings and ensure the encoder uses the intended destination arrangement.
FFmpeg is connected, but the old watch URL does not show the stream The encoder may be connected to a different or inactive broadcast, or the original broadcast may no longer be live. Check the selected broadcast and its status in Live Control Room, then test its public URL again. Do not infer that the stream key determines the viewer page.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 podcast is made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or microphone, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing an always-on FFmpeg machine. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera-based live production.
