What changes when you switch Steam channels?
Steam’s desktop client has two participation states relevant to this procedure. No beta chosen keeps the normal, officially released client. Steam Beta Update opts the client into Valve’s pre-release channel. Valve describes the beta as a way to use the latest features before they are released publicly.

The choice affects the Steam client software, not your game ownership, installed games, cloud saves, friends list, or account credentials. It is also separate from opting a particular game into that game’s own beta branch. You are changing Steam’s interface and client update channel.

Valve does not publish a fixed beta release schedule, guaranteed feature list, download size, reliability percentage, or performance improvement for this choice. Treat the beta as testing software rather than as a permanent performance mode.

Switch the desktop Steam client on Windows, Linux, or macOS
The desktop procedure is the same on Windows and Linux. macOS uses the label Preferences where the other desktop versions say Settings.
Join the Steam Client Beta
- Start Steam and wait until the main client window is open.
- Open the top-left Steam menu.
- Choose Settings. On macOS, choose Preferences.
- Select the Interface tab in the settings window.
- Find Client Beta Participation and open its drop-down menu.
- Select Steam Beta Update.
- Choose Restart Now when Steam prompts you. The new channel is not active until the client relaunches.
After Steam starts again, use the client normally. The beta selection applies to Steam’s client updates; it does not automatically opt individual games into testing branches.
Return to the stable client
- Open Steam > Settings on Windows or Linux, or Steam > Preferences on macOS.
- Open Interface.
- Under Client Beta Participation, select No beta chosen.
- Choose Restart Now and let Steam close and relaunch.
No beta chosen is Valve’s desktop setting for returning to the normal official release. If Steam appears to remain on the beta after the relaunch, use the verification and fallback steps below rather than repeatedly changing the menu.

Steam Deck exposes beta participation through the device’s system settings rather than the desktop client’s Interface tab. This setting concerns the Deck’s SteamOS system update channel.
- Press the physical Steam button.
- Choose Settings.
- Open System.
- Find Beta Participation and expand System Update Channel.
- Select Beta to join the beta channel, then follow the restart prompt.
If your goal is to leave the Deck beta, return to the same System Update Channel control and choose the non-beta channel presented by your device, then complete the requested restart. The exact non-beta wording can vary with the SteamOS build, so read the option currently shown instead of assuming it uses the desktop label No beta chosen.

This Deck path is distinct from changing the desktop Steam client on a Windows, Linux, or macOS computer. Do not look for Client Beta Participation under the desktop Interface tab on the Deck’s gaming-mode interface.
Change the channel in Big Picture Mode
Big Picture Mode has its own system menu for Steam client beta participation.

- Open Settings in Big Picture Mode.
- Choose System.
- Open Beta Participation.
- Expand Steam Client Update Channel.
- Select Steam Beta Update to opt in, or select the non-beta choice shown there to leave it.
- Accept the restart prompt.
The wording in Big Picture Mode is not identical to the desktop settings page: it refers to the Steam Client Update Channel. If you switch to the desktop view later, check the desktop Client Beta Participation control as well.
Where to look when “Client Beta Participation” is missing
Steam’s interface has changed over time, and Valve’s support pages show more than one route. The dedicated Steam Client Beta instructions place the control at Settings (or Preferences) > Interface > Client Beta Participation. A separate Valve troubleshooting page shows a route under Account > Beta participation > Change, followed by Steam Beta Update.

- Confirm that you are using the full desktop Steam client, not a game’s properties window or a web page.
- Open Steam > Settings (or Preferences on macOS) and inspect Interface for Client Beta Participation.
- If your build presents account-level settings instead, open Account, choose Beta participation, and select Change.
- On Deck or in Big Picture Mode, use the relevant System menu instead of the desktop path.
Labels can differ between Steam surfaces and client versions. The important control is the beta-participation or client-update-channel selector; do not confuse it with a game’s individual beta branch.

Use -clearbeta when Steam will not stay on stable
Valve documents -clearbeta as a launch option that opts out of a Steam client public beta and returns Steam to the current official release. It is a software fallback for a client that keeps reopening in beta or cannot apply the normal menu choice.
Add the option to a Steam shortcut
- Close Steam completely. If it remains in the notification area or system tray, use Steam’s exit command there before editing the shortcut.
- Open the properties for the shortcut you use to launch Steam.
- In the shortcut’s target or command field, place a space after the existing Steam launch command and append
-clearbeta. Keep the existing executable path and quotation marks intact; the option is an additional argument, not a replacement for the path. - Apply the change and launch Steam with that shortcut.
- After Steam returns to the official release, remove
-clearbetafrom the shortcut if you do not want the fallback option retained for future launches.
The option changes Steam’s client channel. It does not repair a damaged drive, reinstall games, fix a game-specific beta branch, or address hardware faults. If Steam still fails to launch, the problem is broader than simply selecting a client channel.
How to verify which channel is active
Steam’s selection is applied only after the client has restarted. To verify a change, close and relaunch Steam through the prompt, then reopen the same participation control and check which option is selected. On Deck or in Big Picture Mode, revisit the corresponding System menu and inspect the current update-channel value.
If the selection reverted, first make sure Steam actually exited before restarting. A client process left running in the background can prevent the new channel from being applied. If the normal selector still does not hold on desktop, use -clearbeta to force the official release, then remove the option and make a fresh selection only after Steam starts normally.

Troubleshoot problems after switching
A feature or game behaves differently after joining beta
Reproduce the behavior after the restart and record the exact client channel. A beta build can contain changes that are not in the official release, so a problem that appears only there is useful information rather than proof that the game installation is broken.
You are diagnosing a Steam error
Valve specifically advises participants in Steam beta programs to test both the beta and normal versions when troubleshooting. Reproduce the same action on the selected channel, return to the other channel, restart again, and compare the result. Keep the game, account, and steps identical so the channel is the meaningful variable.
The menu choice changed but nothing else did
Changing the drop-down alone does not switch the running client. Use Restart Now; if you dismissed the prompt, exit Steam fully and start it again. Check the selector after relaunching.
You cannot find the control in the expected place
Use the platform-specific paths: desktop Interface, Deck Settings > System > Beta Participation, or Big Picture Settings > System > Beta Participation. If the desktop layout differs, inspect Account > Beta participation > Change as an alternate Valve-documented location.
Steam repeatedly returns to beta
Exit Steam, launch it once with -clearbeta, confirm that the official client starts, and then remove the option from the shortcut. If the behavior continues, check every shortcut or launcher you use; one may still include a beta-related launch argument.

Choose the right channel for your purpose
Use stable for routine play
Select No beta chosen when you want the current official Steam client for everyday library management, downloads, chat, and game launches. This is the appropriate baseline when you are trying to determine whether a problem is caused by Steam itself or by a particular game.
Use beta for feature testing
Select Steam Beta Update when you intentionally want pre-release client features or need to check whether an issue is present in Valve’s beta channel. Expect to restart after changing channels and be prepared to switch back if the behavior interferes with normal use.
Use both channels during troubleshooting
A controlled comparison is more useful than changing several settings at once. Keep the same game, account, network, and reproduction steps; test once on beta and once on stable, restarting between channel changes. Report which channel produced which result.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking in a game’s properties: game betas are separate from the Steam client beta selector.
- Using the desktop path on Deck: Deck places the control under Settings > System.
- Skipping the restart: the running client remains on its previous channel until it relaunches.
- Assuming beta means faster downloads or better performance: Valve’s description concerns early features, not a guaranteed speed or performance change.
- Leaving
-clearbetapermanently in a shortcut: remove it after recovery unless you deliberately need it each time you launch. - Comparing different test conditions: when troubleshooting, keep the reproduction steps identical on both channels.

Every channel change requires Steam to restart before the selection takes effect. On desktop, -clearbeta is the documented fallback for opting out of a public client beta and returning to the current official release.
