The dependable built-in fallback is to create a separate scene with media files you have confirmed work, then switch to that scene when the main file is unavailable. For an ordered playlist in one scene, use the VLC Video source with shuffle off; it can play playlist items, but its loop and shuffle settings are not missing-file failover controls.
Choose the fallback that fits your setup

Build an ordered playlist with VLC Video
OBS’s Media Source plays an individual media file. VLC Video is the built-in playlist-capable source. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes it as supporting playlists, similar to an Image Slideshow. VLC Video depends on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed; with 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Install the compatible VLC version. Install VLC before configuring the source. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for VLC Video to appear.
- Add the source. In the scene where you want the playlist, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose VLC Video. Give the source a clear name so it is easy to identify later.
- Add files in playback order. Add the main clip and any fallback clips you want in the playlist. Confirm that each path points to a file accessible from the computer running OBS.
- Set playback behavior. Leave shuffle off if the sequence matters. Enable playlist looping if you want playback to restart after the list ends. Looping controls what happens when the playlist runs out; it does not tell OBS to skip a missing main file and activate a designated backup.
- Save and check the scene. Confirm that the intended source is visible and that the playlist items resolve. Do not assume that having later items in the list guarantees recovery from an unavailable file.
Make a separate backup scene
A distinct scene is the clearest built-in recovery path because the operator can deliberately switch to media known to be available. This is a manual fallback, not an automatic guarantee that OBS will identify every runtime failure.
- Create a new scene in the Scenes panel and name it something recognizable, such as “Backup playlist.”
- Add a VLC Video source and populate it with backup clips whose files are present and accessible on the streaming computer. Set order and looping according to the show.
- Check that the scene’s video and audio are as intended, and save the scene collection.
- If the main file is unavailable, select the backup scene in OBS to switch the program output to it.
Keep the backup media on a path that will still be available when you stream. A file that exists only on another computer or an unmounted drive is not a reliable fallback.

Can OBS switch automatically when a file is missing?
OBS’s documentation distinguishes a single-file Media Source from VLC Video playlists and describes playlist controls, but it does not promise an automatic switch from a missing main file to a chosen backup playlist or scene. The OBS source implementation includes missing-file reporting and playlist/media-state behavior; that is evidence of missing-file handling, not a guarantee of live failover.
Advanced Scene Switcher is a possible building block for a custom macro. Its listing describes File and Media conditions and a Switch scene action, but that does not validate a specific recipe for detecting the failure state you encounter. Confirm the available controls in your installed plugin, then test the exact scenario with the main file actually unavailable before relying on automation during a stream.

Version-sensitive plugin notes
- The Advanced Scene Switcher listing reports version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, with minimum OBS Studio version 31.1.1. These are listing details, not a permanent compatibility promise; check its current requirements before installing.
- The OBS Forums listing for Media Playlist Source reports version 0.1.3, updated April 13, 2025. Its notes say automatic folder refresh was not implemented in that version and that saving settings again can refresh folder contents. Check the current listing and release notes before adopting it.
Test the failure before going live
- Save your OBS scene collection.
- Temporarily make the main file unavailable in a controlled test—for example, move it out of its expected location—and observe what OBS reports.
- For a manual workflow, switch to the backup scene and confirm its clips resolve and its audio and video behave as expected.
- For a plugin macro, verify that the configured condition detects this exact failure and that the action switches to the intended scene. Restore the main file afterward and confirm the normal setup still works.
Troubleshooting common problems
- VLC Video is not available in the source list: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- A playlist item does not play: Check that its file path is correct and that the file is accessible from the computer running OBS. A playlist entry is not a substitute for a verified local file.
- The playlist order changes: Turn shuffle off if playback order matters.
- The playlist does not restart after the last item: Check the playlist loop setting. It governs replay after the list ends, not recovery from a missing file.
- A plugin does not switch scenes as expected: Confirm the installed OBS and plugin versions, the condition selected, and the target scene. Reproduce the missing-file condition in a controlled test; do not assume a macro works based on its feature list alone.
- A folder’s new files do not appear in Media Playlist Source: For the listed version 0.1.3, the forum notes say automatic folder refresh was not implemented and saving the settings again can refresh contents. Check whether newer releases have changed this behavior.
