To switch OBS scenes automatically as a church service moves from slides to sermon video, connect presentation software that supports OBS scene control through OBS WebSocket, then map each live content type to the OBS scene you want. Church Presenter documents this workflow: slides can switch to a slides scene, video to a media playback scene, and unmapped content leaves the current scene active. Adding a video as an OBS Media Source is separate; it plays media but does not, by itself, make OBS respond to presentation cues.
What you need for automatic scene switching
- OBS Studio running on the computer that will control the YouTube stream.
- Presentation software with an OBS scene-switching integration. Church Presenter documents a connection through OBS WebSocket and mapping content types to scenes.
- OBS scenes prepared for the service content you expect, such as slides and sermon video.
- A working local connection between the presentation software and OBS. If they are on separate computers, both must be on the same local network for the documented Church Presenter setup.
This setup changes which OBS scene is live when the presentation content changes. It does not establish that every presentation app can send those cues. Church Presenter’s documentation is one documented route, not a general compatibility guarantee.
Set up Church Presenter to switch OBS scenes
The steps below follow Church Presenter’s setup guide, published July 12, 2026. Labels may differ across software versions; use the host, port, and password displayed by your own OBS installation.
- Prepare scenes in OBS. Create and name the scenes you want to use, for example “Slides” and “Sermon Video.” Add and configure the appropriate sources in each scene before connecting the presentation software.
- Enable OBS WebSocket. In OBS, open Tools > WebSocket Server Settings, enable the WebSocket server, and note the server port and password shown there. Church Presenter’s guide uses port
4455by default; confirm the value in your own OBS settings rather than assuming it is unchanged. - Enter the OBS connection details in Church Presenter. Open Church Presenter’s OBS settings and provide the host, port, and password. If both applications are on one computer, the guide says to use
localhostas the host. If OBS is on a different computer, enter that computer’s local IP address; both machines need to be on the same local network. - Map each content type to an OBS scene. Assign presentation slides to the slides scene and video content to the scene configured for media playback. Choose mappings that match your actual scene names and service flow.
- Check the connection and run through the service. Confirm Church Presenter indicates a connection, verify each mapping, and test the sequence before going live. In the documented integration, a content type with no mapping leaves OBS on the scene already active.
Church Presenter describes per-content-type OBS scene switching on its feature page and in its OBS connection guide. These are vendor materials, not independent performance tests; a successful setup still depends on the local OBS configuration and network.

Configure sermon video playback separately
Scene switching decides which OBS scene is active. The video itself still needs a playback source in that scene. OBS’s Media Source supports local video or audio files and settings such as looping, restarting playback when the source becomes active, and hiding the source at the end.
- Use a Media Source in the video scene for a file stored on the OBS computer.
- Decide whether the clip should restart whenever that scene becomes active. This matters if the operator or presentation cues may return to the scene.
- Enable looping only if the media should repeat, and configure whether the source hides when playback ends according to the desired transition.
These playback settings do not create a control link between presentation software and OBS. For background on media playback options, see the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

When a capture card is—and is not—needed
A capture card is an optional way to bring an external HDMI video signal into OBS. It is not required for the software-driven scene switching described above, and plugging one in does not itself automate scene changes. OBS lists capture cards among its source types in its Sources Guide.
What other presentation software can establish
Proclaim’s official support material explains how to configure slides, a pastor video, or both for a stream using OBS. That page does not establish that Proclaim automatically switches OBS scenes in response to sermon content, so do not assume it provides the same content-driven control without confirming its current documentation. See Proclaim’s live-streaming guide.

When evaluating another presentation application, check specifically whether it can issue OBS scene changes, how it identifies the active content, whether the connection is local or networked, and which operating systems and OBS versions it supports. The documentation cited here does not provide a complete comparison or current pricing for presentation applications.
Troubleshooting automatic switching
Church Presenter does not show a connection
- Recheck the host, port, and password against OBS’s WebSocket Server Settings.
- For a same-computer setup, confirm the host is
localhost. For two computers, use the OBS computer’s local IP address and confirm both are on the same local network. - Check that the WebSocket server is enabled in OBS and that the port entered in Church Presenter matches the one OBS displays.
OBS connects but stays on the wrong scene
- Confirm the live content type has a mapping and that it points to the intended, existing OBS scene.
- Remember that an unmapped type leaves the currently active scene in place in the documented Church Presenter workflow.
- Test each content transition in the planned order; a correct connection alone does not verify that the scene mapping matches the service.
The video scene appears, but the clip does not play as expected
- Check that the Media Source is configured with the intended file and playback options.
- Review whether playback should restart when the source becomes active, whether it should loop, and what should happen when the file ends.
- Keep playback diagnosis separate from scene-control diagnosis: Media Source settings govern the file, while the presentation integration governs scene changes.
Check YouTube rights and stream readiness
Before streaming sermon recordings, worship music, videos, or other media, make sure the church has the rights or permissions needed for the material. Also test the complete run of slides and video before the public service so you can catch connection, mapping, and playback problems while they are still easy to correct.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously rather than switch scenes during a live church service, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. This is for uploaded video playback, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube.
