For a simple sequence of clips in one OBS scene, add them to a VLC Video Source playlist. If each clip should lead to a different layout, use the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin to watch for a media source ending and switch scenes. These are different workflows: a playlist advances files inside one source; it does not create a scene transition for each file.
Choose the right OBS method
| What you want | Use | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Play several videos in order in one layout | VLC Video Source | OBS plays a playlist in a single source and scene. You can set it to loop or shuffle. |
| Change scenes when a particular video finishes | Advanced Scene Switcher | A macro watches a media source’s playback state and switches to a chosen scene. |
For a fixed run of gaming clips, trailers, or intermission videos with the same overlays, start with the VLC playlist. Use scene switching when a clip needs a different layout, such as moving from a gameplay scene to a discussion scene.
Play a video playlist in one OBS scene
Install VLC with the right architecture
OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. Match its architecture to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If VLC is missing or the architecture does not match, the VLC source may not appear in OBS. See the OBS Media Sources guide for details on Media Source and VLC Video Source behavior.
Add and order the files
- Open the OBS scene that will be on air. In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video Source.
- Name the source, then open its properties. Add the local video files to the playlist in the order you want them to play. Check the list before going live; its order determines the sequence.
- Set Loop Playlist according to whether the sequence should repeat. Set Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed program order, or on if you want the playlist shuffled. The documented defaults are loop on and shuffle off, so check both settings rather than assuming they match your plan.
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene and preview playback. If the video needs to fill a particular part of the layout, size and position the source in the OBS canvas before streaming.
This keeps the files in one source and one scene. It does not automatically switch to a separate OBS scene between playlist items.

Switch to a different scene when a video ends
Prepare scenes and media sources
Create the scenes for the layouts you need, then add the relevant video as a media source in its scene. Use a separate scene for each distinct layout or segment that needs its own transition. A regular OBS Media Source plays an individual local file; the documented formats include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Its Loop setting repeats that file, while Restart playback when source becomes active restarts it when it becomes visible in the current scene. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Build a macro in Advanced Scene Switcher
- Install a release of Advanced Scene Switcher compatible with your OBS version. The OBS Project forum resource listing reports version 1.36.1, last updated August 7, 2026, and OBS Studio 31.1.1 as its minimum supported version. Check the current release notes and compatibility information before installing; those version details can change.
- In the plugin’s Macro area, create a macro with a Media condition for the video source you want to monitor. Configure it to recognize that source’s playback completion.
- Add a Switch scene action that selects the destination scene, then activate the switcher.
- Confirm the exact media-state labels available in your installed plugin version. Test the entire sequence privately, including the destination scene and any following clips, before relying on it in a live broadcast.
The plugin’s resource listing documents Media conditions and Switch scene actions, but does not establish a particular click-by-click configuration for every version or guarantee a gapless transition. Treat the macro as something to verify with your actual scenes and media sources.

Account for a scene being reactivated
If a macro later returns to a scene, check that scene’s Media Source settings. With Restart playback when source becomes active enabled, the clip starts over when it becomes visible again rather than resuming from its previous position. Turn that behavior into part of your sequence intentionally; otherwise, it can look like an unexpected replay.
Connect OBS automation to YouTube Live
OBS controls the video composition and sends an encoder-based live stream; its scene automation does not, by itself, schedule, start, or end the YouTube broadcast. Configure the YouTube stream and OBS output separately, then verify the output and scene sequence before the event. The YouTube live-streaming guide says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature ahead of your planned broadcast.

Troubleshoot file playback and scene changes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is missing from the source menu | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and match the architecture; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| Playlist repeats or plays in an unexpected order | Loop or shuffle is enabled or disabled differently than intended. | Reopen source properties and check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist; verify the file order. |
| A clip starts over after returning to its scene | The Media Source is configured to restart when it becomes active. | Review Restart playback when source becomes active and decide whether restarting fits the sequence. |
| A macro does not switch scenes | The media condition may be watching the wrong source or using a state label that differs in the installed plugin version; the switcher may also not be active. | Confirm the selected source and available completion state, verify the destination scene action, activate the switcher, and test privately. |
| YouTube streaming is not available yet | Live streaming has not been enabled, or first-time enablement is still processing. | Enable the feature ahead of time; YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel rather than operate an OBS scene-by-scene production, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams your upload at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live setup. Start your free StreamNeo day.
