What you need to know before handling a horse
Minecraft horses are individual animals rather than interchangeable mounts. Their health, movement speed, jump height and coat color can vary, so the first horse you tame may be useful without being the best one for long-distance travel or difficult terrain. Treat taming as the beginning of the process: first make the animal yours, then equip it, evaluate it and decide whether to keep it for riding or use it in a breeding program.

The interaction button for mounting and opening the horse screen depends on your platform. Use the normal horse-interaction control for your edition, and sneak while interacting when your platform requires that to open the equipment interface instead of mounting.
How to find and tame a horse
Search open grassy terrain
Start in broad, open areas such as plains. These spaces make horses easier to spot and give you room to approach, mount and remount without getting trapped against trees or cliffs. Bring an empty hand for the initial interaction. Food is optional for the basic method, although feeding certain foods can make taming easier.

Mount until the horse accepts you
- Approach an adult horse with your hand empty.
- Use the platform’s mount control.
- If the horse throws you off, move back to it and mount again.
- Continue until heart particles appear around the horse.
Being thrown off is normal during this process. A failed attempt does not mean the horse is unusable; simply repeat the mount action. The hearts are the reliable confirmation that taming has finished, rather than the number of attempts or the horse’s coat color.
Optional food during taming
Certain foods can improve the chance of taming, but food is not a substitute for the visual confirmation. If you use food, continue checking for heart particles and keep remounting until they appear. Golden apples have a broader role: Mojang says they can improve the chance of taming, help with breeding and healing, and speed the growth of foals. That makes them valuable, so use them during taming when the higher success chance justifies the cost.

Once tamed, lead the horse to a fenced area or another safe enclosure before you begin testing it. A secure holding area prevents a promising animal from wandering while you gather a saddle, compare it with another horse or prepare a breeding pair. Keep adults that you plan to breed close together so you do not waste time searching for them later.
How to saddle and ride a horse
Install the saddle
- Stand beside the tamed horse.
- Open the horse’s inventory or equipment screen using your platform’s horse-interaction control; on controls that distinguish the two actions, sneak while interacting.
- Place a saddle in the saddle slot.
- Close the screen and mount the horse again.
A saddle is required to control the horse while riding. Without one, you may be able to sit on the animal, but you do not get the directional control that makes it a practical mount. If the horse will not respond to steering, dismount and check that the saddle is actually in the saddle slot rather than still in your player inventory.
Learn what riding is good for
A saddled horse is useful for moving across the world more quickly and for clearing terrain that would slow a player on foot. Test the animal in a safe, flat area first, then try small changes in elevation and obstacles. This lets you judge its movement speed and jump height without risking a fall or losing the horse.

Horse armor is optional
Horse armor protects the animal; it is not needed for taming, breeding or steering. The Horse Update identifies iron, gold and diamond armor as protective horse equipment. Equip armor when the route, enemies or fall risk makes extra protection worthwhile, and leave the slot empty when you are evaluating a horse’s movement or simply traveling through a safe area.

How to feed, heal and raise horses
Use the right food for the job
Feeding has several possible purposes, and the same item is not always the best use of your supplies. Hay bales and ordinary feed can restore or support horses. Golden apples and golden carrots are the foods specifically identified for breeding in the Horse Update, while Mojang also documents golden apples for improving taming, healing and foal growth.
- Taming: food can make the process easier, but remount until hearts appear.
- Breeding: use one golden apple or one golden carrot on each tamed adult horse.
- Healing or support: use appropriate feed when the horse needs recovery.
- Foal growth: golden apples can speed maturation when reaching adulthood quickly matters more than saving the item.
Do not assume that ordinary feed will trigger the breeding behavior described here. The cited Horse Update specifically names golden apples and golden carrots as breeding foods, so reserve those items for the adults you have selected as parents.
How to breed two horses
Prepare a compatible pair
Both animals must be tamed adults. Bring them into the same enclosed area and keep them close enough to interact. Before feeding, compare their health, movement speed and jump strength. Color can be part of your visual preference, but it does not replace those performance checks.
Trigger breeding
- Place the two tamed adult horses together.
- Feed the first horse one golden apple or one golden carrot.
- Feed the second horse one golden apple or one golden carrot.
- Watch for hearts showing that both animals have entered love mode.
- Allow the interaction to finish and a foal will appear.
Each parent needs its own breeding item. Feeding only one horse does not complete the pair. If no foal appears, verify that both horses are adults and tamed, that they are close together and that each received one of the two specified foods.

What the foal inherits
Current breeding guidance models a foal’s attributes from its parents with random variance. In practical terms, the offspring is influenced by the pair you choose, but it is not a guaranteed copy or a guaranteed improvement. That is why parent selection matters: repeatedly breeding the best available adults gives you more opportunities to retain a foal with stronger traits.

How to raise a foal and decide when to keep it
Let normal growth happen
A foal matures over time without requiring a special command. Keep it in a safe enclosure and make sure you can identify it later if several young horses are present. If you are running a breeding project, separate promising foals from animals you have already evaluated so records do not become confused.
Speed up growth when necessary
Mojang specifically documents golden apples as a way to speed the growth of foals. Use one when you need a mount ready quickly—for example, before a planned journey or when replacing a lost adult. Otherwise, saving the item for a high-value breeding attempt, healing or a difficult taming session may be the better trade-off.
Evaluate the adult, not the appearance
Once a foal has matured, test and record its health, movement speed and jump strength. A visually appealing coat does not establish any of those values. Keep the animal if it improves the trait you are targeting, and use it as a parent only after comparing it with your existing adults.

Make the cross
For a pack-animal option, breed a tamed horse with a donkey. Keep the two adults together and use the same breeding procedure: feed each animal a golden apple or golden carrot and wait for the love-mode hearts. The offspring is a mule.

Plan around the mule’s limitation
Mules cannot breed. Treat the first mule as the end of that particular reproductive branch rather than as a new parent for future generations. If you want a continuing line of riding horses, keep a separate pair of breedable horses. If you want a mule for its utility, produce the number you need while you still have suitable horse and donkey parents.

How to develop a faster or stronger horse
Define the trait you care about
“Better” depends on the job. For long trips, movement speed is the deciding measurement. For rough ground, jump height may matter more. For dangerous routes, health is the priority. Choose one primary trait and one secondary trait before you start breeding; otherwise, it is easy to keep attractive but mediocre animals and lose track of why each parent was selected.
Keep simple records
Use a sign, book or other in-game note to identify each adult. Record the three performance traits and the parent pair for every foal you decide to keep. A simple record prevents accidental use of an untested animal and makes it possible to compare generations rather than relying on memory.
- Measure or otherwise compare the health, speed and jump strength of your starting adults.
- Select the pair that best matches your chosen goal.
- Breed them with one golden apple or golden carrot per parent.
- Raise the foal and test the same traits after it matures.
- Retain the strongest result and repeat with the best available adult pair.
Expect variation
Because random variance is part of the current breeding model, one breeding may produce a weaker foal and the next may produce a useful improvement. Do not discard a sound parent after one disappointing result, and do not assume a single exceptional foal proves that every sibling will match it. Selective breeding works by repeating the process and keeping the individuals that actually meet your target.

The horse keeps throwing you off
Continue mounting. The horse is not tamed until heart particles appear. You can optionally use food to improve the taming chance, but the visual hearts remain the confirmation.

You can sit on the horse but cannot steer
Check the saddle slot. A saddle must be installed to control the horse while riding. Reopen the equipment screen using your platform’s horse-interaction control and place the saddle in the correct slot.

- Confirm that both horses are tamed.
- Confirm that both are adults.
- Keep them close together.
- Feed one golden apple or golden carrot to each animal.
- Look for love-mode hearts before expecting the foal.
The foal is not faster than its parents
That outcome is possible because offspring attributes include random variance. Compare the foal after it matures, keep the best result and repeat selective breeding instead of treating one pairing as a guarantee.
You bred a mule and cannot breed it again
That is expected: mules cannot breed. Keep breedable horses and a donkey available if you want additional mules later.
You cannot find a horse you just tamed
Move newly tamed animals into an enclosure before testing them. A fenced holding area and clear labels reduce the chance of confusing adults, foals and mules or losing a promising breeding parent.
A practical horse routine
For a reliable progression, use this order: search open grassy terrain, tame several adults, secure them, saddle and test them, record health/speed/jump performance, then breed the strongest compatible pair. Raise each foal safely, accelerate growth only when the time savings justify a golden apple, and repeat selection until the result fits your travel needs. Make a horse-and-donkey cross only when you specifically want a mule, because that offspring cannot continue a breeding line.
Sources and attribution
The Mojang Horse Update identifies golden apples and golden carrots as breeding foods and lists iron, gold and diamond armor as protective horse equipment. In a Mojang article published January 22, 2026, Duncan Geere states: “Golden apples can be used to improve the chance of taming a horse, breeding and healing them, and speeding up the growth of foals.” Guidance on mule breeding and the non-breedable status of mules is consistent with the Pearson guide’s horse-taming sample. Current breeding guidance describes foal attributes as parent-based with random variance, which is why comparing parent health, movement speed and jump strength is more useful than choosing by color alone.
