Open the page for the exact game rather than relying on a search snippet, an old giveaway post, or a general category listing. Steam directs players to a game’s own page for its details, and Store listings can include different games and offers. The Steam Free to Play search page can help you find games, but it does not establish the current terms for a particular offer.

On the game page, look for the offer wording, the price or access button, and what any countdown refers to. A timer by itself does not tell you whether you are claiming a permanent license or accessing a temporary event.

How to interpret the label and countdown
Free to Play: ongoing free access
Steam Support says Free to Play games can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card. Individual games may still have their own limitations or optional in-game purchases, so check the game’s page for specifics. “Free” does not mean every optional item is free.

Free to Keep: a deadline to claim ownership
The countdown on a Free to Keep offer marks the time remaining to claim the permanent license. Steamworks says the promotion temporarily places a free package on the base game’s Store page; after the promotion ends, that package is removed. Claiming within the window is what grants the permanent license.
Free Weekend: a deadline for temporary play
A Free Weekend timer marks the end of the temporary play event, not a deadline to claim a permanent license. If you want to continue playing after the event, you need to buy the game.

- Open the exact game’s current Store page.
- Read the offer label: Free to Play, Free to Keep, or Free Weekend.
- Check what the timer applies to: a claim period or a temporary play event.
- If it is Free to Keep, claim the offer before its deadline to receive the permanent license.
- If it is a Free Weekend, assume access ends with the event unless you purchase the game.
- If it is Free to Play, review the game page for its own limitations and optional purchases.
- Recheck the live page before acting, because offers and prices can change.
How long do these promotions last?
Steamworks says Free to Keep promotions must run for at least 24 hours and generally recommends keeping them under two weeks. Its Free Weekend guidance says events typically run Thursday to Monday and recommends at least four days.
