1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the categories of the Pokémon’s damaging moves, then compare its Attack and Special Attack stats. Physical moves use Attack against the target’s Defense; special moves use Special Attack against Special Defense. A Pokémon is best described by the attacking role its stats and useful moves support—not by its species name or elemental type alone.
Check a move’s category first
Open the move’s details in the game you are playing and look for its category, usually shown as Physical, Special, or Status, or with a game-specific icon. Do not assume every Pokémon game uses the same screen or symbols. In the official Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl guide, physical moves are marked with a red burst and special moves with a blue ring; those icons are specific to that guide’s games. Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl trainer guide.
- Physical: the user’s Attack is compared with the target’s Defense.
- Special: the user’s Special Attack is compared with the target’s Special Defense.
- Status: a separate category; these moves generally do not deal direct damage, so they do not tell you whether the Pokémon is a physical or special attacker.
The official Pokémon RPGs guide also explains that a move’s Power affects damage. Category tells you which stats are involved, but it is not a complete damage calculation.
Compare the Pokémon’s stats with its available moves
On the Pokémon’s summary or stat screen, compare Attack with Special Attack. The higher stat is a useful first clue, but it does not settle the question by itself. Check whether the Pokémon can use worthwhile moves of that category in the particular game, and consider those moves’ Power and the role you want it to fill.
#1 Best Overall
- If Attack is stronger and the Pokémon has useful physical moves, it is a practical physical attacker.
- If Special Attack is stronger and it has useful special moves, it is a practical special attacker.
- If its stats and moves support both styles, it can be used either way; “physical attacker” and “special attacker” are descriptions of an offensive role, not permanent species classifications.
The official guide’s general advice is to focus on the stats relevant to a Pokémon’s learnable moves and intended role, rather than assuming every stat matters equally. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl trainer guide.

In games before Generation IV, a damaging move’s type determined whether it used the physical or special damage calculation. Since the physical/special split introduced in Generation IV, each move has its own category. That means type and category answer different questions: type matters for type matchups, while category determines which offensive and defensive stats are used. Check the move itself instead of relying on an old type-based rule. Bulbapedia: Physical/special split; see also Smogon’s beginner guide.
