For suspected concussion without those emergency signs, stop play, keep the player out, and arrange prompt medical advice. This is triage guidance, not a diagnosis.
Choose the level of care by the warning signs
| Care level | What to look for | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency now | Severe head-injury danger signs; possible neck or spinal injury; a serious deformity or open fracture; heavy bleeding, shock, or impaired breathing; or severe heat-illness symptoms. | Call your local emergency number. Keep the player still if a spinal injury is possible, and monitor breathing and responsiveness while help is coming. |
| Urgent same-day professional advice | Possible concussion without emergency danger signs; vomiting or dizziness after a head impact; head injury while taking blood thinners or intoxicated; or significant pain or loss of function. | Keep the player out of sport and contact an appropriate local health service or clinician promptly. |
| Monitor and seek follow-up | A minor injury without warning signs, where the player remains alert and can move normally. | Watch for worsening or persistent symptoms and seek care if they appear, continue, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Head-injury symptoms can emerge later. |
Emergency and urgent-care phone numbers differ by country. The examples below distinguish UK NHS routes from US emergency guidance; use the equivalent services where you live.
After a head impact: know when it is an emergency
Call emergency services for danger signs
After a blow to the head, call the local emergency number if the player does not wake after losing consciousness, cannot stay awake, has a seizure, develops new weakness or numbness, or has trouble speaking, understanding, walking, or balancing. Vision or hearing problems, clear fluid or blood from the ears or nose, or a severe or high-speed mechanism also warrant emergency assessment. The NHS lists examples for the UK and advises calling 999 for emergency signs: NHS: head injury and concussion.
Get urgent advice even if the player has not collapsed
Vomiting or dizziness after a head injury, taking blood-thinning medication, or being intoxicated at the time of the injury are reasons to seek urgent professional advice. In the UK, NHS 111 is the route for urgent advice when emergency signs are absent; elsewhere, use the local urgent-care service. Refer to the NHS guidance for its complete symptom list: NHS: head injury and concussion.

Suspected concussion means no return that day
Remove a player from the game if concussion is possible, even if they seem better after a short rest. Do not allow a same-day return. Arrange assessment by a healthcare professional; returning to sport requires medical clearance. The CDC states: “An athlete experiencing concussion danger signs needs to go to the emergency department right away.” See CDC: Responding to a Sports-related Concussion.
Continue to watch for changes: concussion symptoms may appear hours or days after the impact. A player’s apparent improvement on the sideline does not establish that it is safe to resume play. The NHS advises monitoring after head injury: NHS: head injury and concussion.

Possible neck or spinal injury: minimize movement
A significant collision or fall followed by neck or back pain, visible deformity, weakness, numbness, or tingling may indicate a serious injury. Impaired breathing, heavy bleeding, or being unable to move safely also calls for emergency help. Call your local emergency number and tell the player not to move. Leave them in the position found while help is coming unless movement is necessary for CPR or bleeding control; follow dispatcher instructions and act only within your first-aid training. See American Red Cross: First Aid Steps.
Possible fracture or serious limb injury
Seek medical assessment if a limb looks bent or deformed, the player cannot or will not move it, there is numbness or tingling below the injury, or bone has broken through the skin. Treat a suspected muscle or bone injury as a possible fracture rather than trying to confirm it on the field. Do not straighten a deformed limb. A suspected fracture involving the head, neck, spine, pelvis, or upper leg, or signs of shock, requires emergency care. See American Red Cross: First Aid Steps.

Heat illness during play
Stop activity and seek medical care promptly if a player develops symptoms of heat-related illness. Confusion, seizure, or unresponsiveness during exertion should be treated as an emergency: call the local emergency number. Follow emergency-service or clinician directions. The CDC advises seeking medical care immediately for an athlete with heat-illness symptoms: CDC: Heat and athletes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When monitoring is reasonable—and when it is not
Monitoring is appropriate only when the injury appears minor and there are no warning signs such as impaired alertness, movement, breathing, or function. Get professional advice if symptoms worsen, persist, or leave you unsure what the injury is. For any head impact, continue monitoring for delayed symptoms and do not use an apparently normal sideline check as permission to return that day if concussion is suspected. Follow local medical advice for the player’s circumstances.
