Watch system memory and GPU behavior while the game is actually hitching or showing a warning, then compare those readings with the game’s current requirements. Repeated system-memory pressure can point toward a RAM constraint; a game’s graphics-memory warning or improvement after lowering texture quality can point toward a VRAM constraint. Neither a single reading nor a symptom proves the cause: slow performance can have several explanations.
RAM and VRAM are different resources
System RAM is the computer’s working memory for loaded applications and files. It helps the device handle activity without relying as much on slower disk storage, but general memory guidance is not a game-specific capacity recommendation. Microsoft describes memory’s role in PC performance.
VRAM generally refers to graphics memory used by a GPU for graphics-related work. GPU configurations vary: a computer may have integrated graphics, a discrete GPU, or both. Some laptops switch between GPUs according to workload, and Windows may report graphics-memory information differently across devices. A Task Manager number by itself is not proof that a game has exhausted VRAM.
How to check whether memory is the likely bottleneck
- Look up the game’s current requirements. Check the developer’s requirements for the specific game and version you play. Microsoft likewise advises checking the developer for a particular app or game’s GPU requirements: Microsoft’s GPU guidance.
- Open Task Manager during the problem. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. In Performance, watch system memory and GPU performance; in Processes, check which processes are using resources. Observe the readings during the actual hitch or warning, not only when the game is idle. Task Manager overview.
- Check for other resource use. Background applications can contribute to slow performance. Review resource use and startup apps, and close applications you are not using where appropriate. Microsoft’s Windows performance tips.
- Compare signals instead of relying on one number. Repeated system-memory pressure during the problem points toward investigating RAM. A game’s own graphics-memory warning, or a consistent improvement after reducing texture quality, can point toward a VRAM constraint. These are clues, not conclusive tests; there is no universal percentage that establishes exhaustion.
- Verify which GPU is running the game. On a system with integrated and discrete graphics, check that the game is assigned to the intended GPU before interpreting its performance or memory readings. Windows provides per-app graphics preferences; the available choices depend on the device. Windows graphics preference settings.
What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
| Observation | What it may suggest | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| System memory remains under pressure while the game stutters | A system-RAM constraint is worth investigating, especially if other processes are also using memory. | That RAM is the only cause of the stutter. |
| The game displays a graphics-memory warning | A graphics-memory constraint may be involved. | That every game or GPU uses the same threshold or reports memory in the same way. |
| Lowering texture quality improves the problem | The change is consistent with a graphics-memory constraint. | Definitive proof; a settings change can affect performance for more than one reason. |
| High GPU activity, slow loading, or stuttering | There is a performance issue to diagnose while it occurs. | Memory exhaustion by itself. Slow performance has multiple possible causes. |
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking resource use because slow performance can have several causes. See the Windows performance troubleshooting guidance.

Use the findings to choose the next step
- If system RAM looks constrained: check whether background apps are consuming memory and compare the computer with the game developer’s requirements. Consider a RAM upgrade only if the evidence points to system memory and the computer supports a compatible upgrade.
- If VRAM looks constrained: test a lower texture-quality setting and consult the game’s requirements and any in-game warning. Adding system RAM does not increase a discrete GPU’s dedicated VRAM limit.
- If neither pattern is clear: do not infer a memory problem from one symptom or Task Manager percentage. Check other resource use and confirm the intended GPU is selected before drawing a conclusion.
